How to
Read a Play
Script
Presentation
Characters
Before you start reading, take a few
minutes to read through the character list
and their descriptions. This will help you
keep track of who is who as you read.
Stage
Directions
Playscripts often include stage directions that
describe how the characters move and interact
with their surroundings. These can be
important clues to the meaning of the play, so
don't skip over them.
Setting
Unlike a novel, a playscript does not provide a
lot of description of the setting. Use your
imagination to picture the stage, the props, and
the lighting as you read.
Dialogue
Playscripts are meant to be performed, so
reading the dialogue aloud can help you get a
sense of the rhythm and pacing of the play. It
can also help you understand the characters'
emotions and motivations.
Themes
Like any piece of literature, plays often have
underlying themes and messages. As you read,
think about what the play is trying to say about
the world or the human experience.
