21. Questions
r9

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

A monsoon is a seasonal change in the direction of the prevailing, or strongest, winds of a region.
da

Monsoons are most often associated with the Indian Ocean. The summer monsoon and the winter
monsoon determine the climate for most of India and Southeast Asia.
ti

The summer monsoon is associated with heavy rainfall. It usually happens between April and September.
pa

As winter ends, warm, moist air from the southwest Indian Ocean blows toward countries like India, Sri
Lanka, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The summer monsoon brings a humid climate and torrential rainfall to
an

these areas.
v

India and Southeast Asia depend on the summer monsoon. Agriculture, for example, relies on the yearly
sa

rain. Many areas in these countries do not have large irrigation systems surrounding lakes, rivers, or
snowmelt areas. Aquifers, or supplies of underground water, are shallow.
The summer monsoon fills wells and aquifers for the rest of the year. Rice and tea are some crops that rely
on the summer monsoon. Dairy farms, which help make India the largest milk producer in the world, also
depend on the monsoon rains to keep cows healthy and well-fed.

Industry in India and Southeast Asia also relies on the summer monsoon. A great deal of electricity in the
region is produced by hydroelectric power plants, which are driven by water collected during
the monsoons. Electricity powers hospitals, schools, and businesses that help the economies of these areas
develop.

When the summer monsoon is late or weak, the region’s economy suffers. Fewer people can grow their
own food, and large agribusinesses do not have produce to sell. Governments must import food.

IBPS SO Prelims 2024 English Bundle PDF Course (Day-10)

Electricity becomes more expensive, sometimes limiting development to large businesses

and wealthy individuals. The summer monsoon has been called India’s true finance minister.

Heavy summer monsoons can cause great damage. Residents of such urban areas as Mumbai, India, are
used to the streets flooding with almost half a meter (1.5 feet) of water every summer. However, when
the summer monsoon is stronger than expected, floods can devastate the region. In cities like Mumbai,
entire neighborhoods can be drowned. In rural areas, mudslides can bury villages and destroy crops.

The Indian Oceans winter monsoon, which lasts from October to April, is less well-known than its rainy
summer equivalent. The dry winter monsoon blows from the northeast. These winds start in the air above
Mongolia and northwestern China.

Winter monsoons are less powerful than summer monsoons in Southeast Asia, in part because the

om
Himalaya Mountains prevent much of the wind and moisture of the monsoons from reaching the coast.
The Himalayas also prevent much of the cool air from reaching places like southern India and Sri Lanka,

l.c
keeping them warm all year. Winter monsoons are sometimes associated with droughts.

Not all winter monsoons are dry, however. Unlike the western part of Southeast Asia, the eastern, Pacific

ai
coast of Southeast Asia experiences its rainy season in the winter. The winter monsoon brings moist air

gm
from the South China Sea to areas like Indonesia and Malaysia.

‘Negative’ outlook, it said, reflects uncertainty over the debt trajectory following the sharp deterioration in
India’s public finances due to the pandemic shock.

Fitch said it has further lowered India’s GDP forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2022 (FY22) to 8.7
percent from 10 per cent in June as a result of the severe second virus wave. It had in June cut the growth
forecast from 12.8 per cent.

Which word would fill in the blank (E) as per the context of the passage?

a. Limitation

b. Expansion

c. Contraction

d. Enclosure

e. None of the above

Explanations:

om
1. Questions

l.c
Answer: B

ai
Option B is incorrect. In this sentence was should be replaced by had been. Because in such type of
sentence where we use (after or before in starting)... then we should use past perfect sentences first and
then past indefinite.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

gm
@
2. Questions
75

Answer: E
r9

The sentence is grammatically and contextually correct, therefore, option E is the correct answer.
da

3. Questions

Answer: D
ti

Option D is incorrect. In this sentence, few should be replaced by little. Because the word 'few' refers to
pa

countable nouns and is used with the plural form. And little is generally used to refer to non-countable
nouns and is used with the singular form.
an

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

v

4. Questions
sa

Answer: C

Option C is incorrect. In this sentence, faster should be replaced by fastest. Because the superlative
degree should be used after (one of) and the noun should be in its plural form. Therefore, option C is the
correct answer.

5. Questions

Answer: B

Option B is correct. In this sentence, where should be replaced by unless. Because we use the conjunction
unless to mean 'except if'. The clause which follows unless is a subordinate clause.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

6. Questions

Answer: A

The context tells us that the ABG Shipyard scam was exposed in the public and its former chairman was
booked for cheating the banks with a huge amount of ₹22,842 crore.

The sentence is in past tense so we need a verb (v2) in the first blank and an adverb in the second blank.
Only option A has the correct set of words that fit the blanks contextually and grammatically.

Apparently – allegedly, surely, reportedly, supposedly

Evanesced – came out, exposed, circulated, disclosed

om
7. Questions

Answer: D

l.c
The context tells us that the incident with the French President may be because he refused to take a Covid
test and hence was made to sit at a long table.

ai
Here, we need an adverb that denotes the term ‘long table’ and a verb (v2) in the second blank denoting the

gm
reason for the incident. In option A, ‘excepted’ is contextually incorrect. In option B, ‘numerously’ is
incorrect as it doesn’t modify ‘long table’. In option C, ‘reprobate’ is grammatically incorrect. It should have
been given in the past form of verb (v2). In option E, ‘attained’ is contextually incorrect. So, the correct
@
answer is option D.
75

Enormously – extremely, immensely, hugely

r9

Attain – obtain, acquire

Except – apart from, aside

da

8. Questions
ti

Answer: C
pa

The context tells us about the issue of unavailability of players while the players- Smriti Mandhana and
pacers Renuka Singh and Meghana Singh will not play the game due to elongated isolation and quarantine.
an

We need a present participle in the first blank and a verb (v2) in the second blank.
v

In option A, ‘attending’ and ‘prolonged’ are contextually and grammatically incorrect respectively. ‘Prolong’
sa

is incorrect because it starts with a consonant while we need a word starting with a vowel. Attending is
incorrect because it is not the issue of unavailability. In option B, ‘misplacing’ is incorrect as it is used for
something removed from its place or has been lost. In option D, ‘absence’ is a noun while we need a
present participle. In option E, playing is incorrect because it can’t be the issue of unavailability. So, the
correct answer is option C.

Attenuate- extend, enlarge, prolong

Opposite – abbreviate, curtail and decreased

9. Questions

Answer: B

PDF Course Subscription | Mock Tests Subscription | All in One Subscription Page 14 Of 19

IBPS SO Prelims 2024 English Bundle PDF Course (Day-10)

The context tells us about the applause gained by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami for promising to set up a
committee for preparing UCC if the party gets re-elected in the state, at the same time he got reprimanded
by the opposition.

First blank will be filled with the opposite word of ‘criticized’ because it is a contradiction connected by
‘while’. With this, options D & E are eliminated. In option A, ‘help’ is followed by ‘in’ and it should be
followed by a verb (ing). In option C, ‘direction’ is a noun while we need a verb. So, the correct answer is
option B.

10. Questions

Answer: C

om
The context tells us about the announcement made by the Delhi government that it will display daily shows
on the life and heritage of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar that will be starting after the month of February.

l.c
In the first blank, we need the first form of verb (v1) and a noun in the second blank that gives an idea that
the shows will be based on the good lessons and heritage of Dr. Ambedkar. In this way, option E will be

ai
eliminated. In option A, ‘promoting’ is incorrect as it is a present participle. In option B, ‘legal’ is an
adjective while we need a noun. In option D, ‘dismissal’ is incorrect as it means firing someone from a job.
So, the correct answer is option C.

11. Questions gm
