Jesus calms the storm

Matthew 8:23-27

Jesus calms the storm, certainly one of the most impressive accounts we can
to imagine. The stage was the boat that day, and the Author of life showed once again His
great in relation to absolutely everything, even nature.

We will see throughout this study how we can learn from the verses that compose the
the passage of Jesus calming the storm. There is an incredible contrast between presence and
experience, what do you mean? Look at this study and you will better understand what we are going to talk about.

The subject is well known in the evangelical community, especially among those who read the Word.
of God, however, can you really draw a lesson from this text for your
life? Today you will surely find out!

The storm and the sea fell silent before a man named Jesus, what he has of
special for this to happen? Well, we are talking about the creator himself, the living God who
came down from heaven, so what is the creature (sea and storm) next to the Creator (Jesus, the
Christ)?

See below the text that will be analyzed:

And on that day, it being already late, he said to them: Let us go to the other side. And they, leaving the
crowd, they took him with them, just as he was, in the boat; and there were also with him others
little boats. And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves were rising over the boat,
way that was already filling. And he was at the stern, sleeping on a cushion, and they woke up-
No, saying to him: Master, do you not care that we perish? And he, awakening, rebuked the wind,
And he said to the sea: Be silent, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said-
He said: Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? And they were filled with great fear, and said to one another

to the others: But who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:35-41)

Some of the important points that will be analyzed:

The experience of Pedro, Tiago, and João.

Presentation of Jesus.

The storms of our lives.

Well, without further ado, let's go to the Bible study. Remembering that if you also want to see
a video content on the subject, you can watch the study below published in our
official channel of Biblical Focus:

The historical scenario, the context of the event

The Bible begins to tell us that it being already late, Jesus said to his disciples: Let us cross over to
the other side (Mark 4:35). This 'let us go to the other side' refers to the sea of
Galilee.

A freshwater lake in northern Palestine, heart-shaped, about twenty

kilometers in length by thirteen in width, two hundred meters below sea level. The
it was a place of inspiring beauty: it was a center of commercial activity at the time of
Jesus.

With mountains bordering most of the lake, it was subject to violent storms due to
due to the strong currents of cold air that came from the highest to the lowest levels.

But, despite the scenario of possible storms due to the mountains, the order of Jesus
it was still 'let's move to the other bank'. One thing we must always be aware of is,
when Jesus speaks, he fulfills.

Whatever could appear along the way, the words of Jesus would still be
done. Why does this happen? For the simple fact that the Word of God is not conditioned
to nothing to be done.

I will explain better, if I Felipe said: Let's go to the other bank; my words
they may or may not happen, as my speech is conditioned to God's will, if He wants
Let it be done, amen, if you don't want it, amen!

Now, when Jesus speaks, he does not condition the will of anyone except his own, for he is
the very Word that came down from heaven (John 1:1). The Bible reveals incredible things about speech
Jesus, see the verses below:

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent;
Would he say it and not do it? Or would he speak and not confirm it?” (Numbers 23:19)

Now you can understand that if Jesus said, 'let us go to the other side'
surely it would not be a storm or the sea that would interfere?

That's why all the promises Jesus spoke to you may take time, but be assured
what will be fulfilled in his life, for if he has spoken, it is already decreed!

The experience of Peter, James, and John

The disciples got into the boat, and after some time, the Word of God will tell us that
a great storm begins:

And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves were rising over the boat, so that
"that was already filling." (Mark 4:37). As we have read above, it was common for this to happen at that time.
region due to the strong cold air currents.
In the face of this great storm, the disciples hurried to call the Master:

And he was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion, and they awoke him, saying: Master,
Do you not care that we perish?” (Mark 4:38). What is worth highlighting from this occasion is that there exists
disciples of Jesus who were fishermen, such as Peter, James (the Greater), and John.

This was a profession that they had years of practice in, so they certainly faced
various storms in their lives and it was also known that the region they were in
going through several storms. However, even in the face of so much experience, still
they were scared of that storm.

This shows us that many times in our lives we can have the necessary experience.
for various things, however, experience without Jesus is of no use!

You can:

Knowing how to do the most diverse things in life.

Know how to develop a sermon from start to finish.

Knowing how to lead young people, teenagers, or any other department.

Know how to teach Bible classes and write Bible studies.

Even so, without Jesus, all this experience is of no use. This fact is incredible, as it
it shows the dependence on Christ that we have in our lives. It is more or less what the psalmist
David realized, when David sinned with Bathsheba (adultery), one of the requests he made
when you regretted was:

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Davi knew he could have all the experience in war and as a King, but that was worth nothing.
There is no value without the presence of God. In fact, it is even the next topic we will address.

The presence of Jesus Christ

We realize that even in the face of experience, what truly matters is the presence of Jesus.
Christ. In the passage of the storm that we are analyzing, when the disciples call
Jesus, he quickly performs wonders:

And He, awakening, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: Be still, be quiet. And the wind
he calmed, and there was a great calm. And he said to them: Why are you so timid? Do you still not have faith?
And they were filled with great fear, and said to one another: But who is this, that even the wind and
The sea obeys him?" (Mark 4:39-41).

Thus we can see that the presence of Jesus is much more valuable than our own.
experience. We must begin to understand as the church of Christ, that we depend on
completely from the presence of Jesus. It is useless to fill our services with experience:

Call the most experienced preacher.

Call the more experienced singer.

Call the most experienced conductor.

If even in the face of so much experience, the presence of Jesus does not manifest, it is of no use.
nothing! We are living in a generation that asks for various signs, like miracles, wonders,
cures and so on... My question for this generation is: "Where is the presence of Jesus in
your life?

I am absolutely sure (the Bible allows me this certainty), that when we place Jesus

they demonstrate the importance of the presence of God:

Tremble before the Sovereign, O earth, in the presence of the God of Jacob!

Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name, and the upright will live in your presence.

Where could I escape from your Spirit? Where could I flee from your presence? If I

For the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.” (Psalms 139:7-12)

These are just a few texts that talk about the presence of Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit in
in our lives, several others could be mentioned as well.

Why are you so fearful? Do you not yet have faith? (Conclusion)

Jesus' question, right after calming the storm, was: "Why are you so afraid? Still not...
Do you have faith?
Is the life of the presence of Jesus Christ faith? Or does modesty hinder us?

When the Master mentions the lack of faith, He is talking about believing in the supernatural that He can.
to do. When speaking of intimacy, it relates to the intimacy we can have with Him.

There are two essential things in our Christian journey, faith and intimacy. My question is already in the
The end of this study is, have you been approaching the presence with faith and intimacy?
