1. Background for the proposed externship

Externship is an important program in which externs acquire practical knowledge from

companies or organizations that extern attains and they can easily transfer their experience to
colleagues, students, in addition to those, externs able to participate research and community
service with their highly motivated capacity by using experience that takes from externship. The
university has been sent interested IOT academic staffs in all departments into different
organizations to develop their practical skills because of the fact that externs acquire different
theoretical and practical knowledge including software practice, modern mode of construction
that construct currently in addition to this to develop problem solving capacity of academic staff.

It will help them to improve their academic skill by avoiding the usually practical gap they
always have to some extent. In addition, they try to fill the gap between student’s theoretical and
practical knowledge both in and out of the school. In order to get this opportunity properly
organized and well-structured externship program should be conducted.

In this summer we proposed to join Amhara design and consulting corporation which is the most
power full organization in design and supervise of any building and road constructions.

The major activities that we will do in the proposed company are design and supervision of high
building and road.

The reasons we want to do the externship

In order to develop our self in practical knowledge in addition to theoretical skill starting from
how to manage the construction site, how to construct special structure like deep beam, curved
beam and slab and precast beam and column how to connect per cast beam and column. In
addition to this we want to develop our understanding on self-compacted concrete and how to
cast it for different structural part in the site, and develop how to design road and how to select
the material for construction of road and different road structures.

Significant of the externship

 To share experience since the organization, have a lot of professionals with their tasks
 In order to fill the gap on practical skill on university on the design and construction of Civil
engineering structures (building and road structures) and supervision on the consulting team.

 To do community service and research work on concrete structure and to develop new
construction industry.
 To fill a gap between student’s knowledge on theoretical and practical aspect of civil
engineering.
 To develop how different professional are joined in order to solve certain problem in the
community.
 To develop my practical skill in structural design using the latest design software such as
ETABS, SAP, Civil 3D, Eagle Point & Auto CAD.
Reasons we want to choose the ADSWE
BENMCON Construction, because organization have different department team such as design,
consulting, contractor, supervision and contract administration. Due to having the above full
department team in BENMCON we can develop our practical understanding for design and
supervision and construction of building and road structure. In addition to this the organization
has full laboratory tests. So, BENMCON is one of the leading companies for design,
construction and supervision of building and road.

2. Objective of the externship

General objective
 To acquire practical and technical skill
Specific objective
 To develop problem solving capacity
 To share experience with staff members about our plenty of new challenges that we are
going to face in the externship session and its scientific and practical implication.
 To prepare seminar related to the experience that we get.
 To do community service on the design, supervision and construction of all structures.
 To do maintenance and how to control the safety of existing the building and road
structures.
 To contribute for the capacity development and fulfilment of practical gap of Woldia
University Grand Intelligence Consulting team.
 To develop student’s practical knowledge aspect of civil engineering

Expected outcomes of the externship
 We expect outcomes from the externship is we fully know how to construct modern mode
of construction that are practice currently.
 This externship improves our understanding on pre cast reinforced concrete beam and
column fabrication and how they connect in order to give good joint.
 How to select appropriate material for road construction.
 How to manage construction laboratory room properly and how to operate them properly.
 How to design and construct L-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns.
 In addition to this the externship improves our understanding on how to maintain existing
building structure with respect to the type of filler.
 If we get this externship and can acquire practical and theoretical knowledge on design
and construction of building structure and sharing our experience as we expected,
 Externship is an important program in which externs acquire software based practical
knowledge from companies.
 we definitely apply the practical knowledge that we get from externship on solving the
problem of the community and doing research related to the idea that we get from the
externship.
3. Points that we do after the Externship
a) Proper design of corridor furtherance (ኮሪደር ልማት) Woldia city for all sub city.

After the externship we will do the community service on the design of corridor furtherance
(ኮሪደር ልማት) Woldia city. Which include proper design of the road, side dich, walk way,
bicycle way, electric utility underground, water supply utility underground and Wast disposal
facility.

b) Identification of failed type of building structure and applying appropriate maintenance for
that building in north Wollo.

By taking site visit in different building structures and identify the failed mechanism, the
case of failer and stage of failed of that building structures in north Wollo. After identifying
the failed type and stage we select appropriate maintenance on that type of failed.
