Normal Structure

The document outlines the examination details for the second semester of the HND Civil Engineering program, focusing on the design of structural elements. It includes a case study requiring calculations related to design loads, beam reactions, bending moments, shear forces, and column capacities. The exam consists of technical questions, each worth 10 marks, totaling 70 marks, with specific instructions to prioritize technical terms and avoid excessive writing.

CASE STUDY.
The floor shown below with an overall depth of 225 mm is to be designed to carry an imposed load of 3
kN m−2 plus floor finishes and ceiling loads of 1 kN m−2 .

i) Calculate the design loads acting on beams B1–C1 and B2–C2. Assume that the beam weight
is 70 kg m−1 run.
ii) Assuming that the slab is simply supported, beam B1–C1 supports a uniformly distributed
load from a 1.5 m width of slab (hatched //////) plus self-weight of beam. And the beam is
symmetrically loaded, Isolate the beam and calculate the reactions RB1 and RC1 in KN.
iii) Using equilibrium equations, calculate the bending moments (Mx) and shear forces (Vx) of
the beam, and draw the bending moment and shear force diagram.
iv) Use the formulae method and compare your results.
v) If the depth of the beam (d) =100mm, σy = 20 N mm−2, and the moment of resistance (Mr,
el) for the ELASTIC Criteria is 1.67 x 10^6 Nmm. Calculate the breadth (b) of the beam.
vi) Calculate the design loads acting on columns B1 and C1 Assuming a column height of 3 m,
and column weights 60 kg m−1 run.
vii) Column B1 is isolated as shown below. Determine whether this column will be able to
withstand the design load obtained in (v) above, Assuming that the design compressive
strengths of the concrete and steel reinforcement are 14 and 375 N mm−2 respectively.
