Q No.

Extra Questions Ch-3 Pair of Linear Equations in two variables

1. For all real values of c, the pair of equations x – 2y = 8 and 5x – 10y = c have a unique solution.
Justify whether it is true or false.
2. Find the value of p for which the following pair of linear equations have a unique solution:
(i) 4x + py +8 = 0 (ii) (3p – 2 )x – py + 3 = 0
2x + 2y + 2 = 0 2px + y – 5 = 0
3. Find the value(s) of k for which the following pair of linear equations will have infinitely many
solutions:
(ii) kx + 3y – (k – 3) = 0 (ii) x + (k + 1)y = 5
12x + ky – k = 0 (k + 1)x + 9y = 8k – 1.
4. Find the value(s) of k for which the following pair of linear equations have no solution:
(iii) kx + 3y = k – 2 (ii) 3x + y = 1
12x + ky = k (2k – 1)x + (k – 1)y = 2k + 1.
5. Are the following pair of linear equations consistent? Justify your answer.
2ax + by = a
4ax + 2by – 2a = 0, a, b ≠0
6. Solve the following pair of linear equations:

𝑏 𝑎
𝑥 + 𝑏 𝑦 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 and 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 2𝑎𝑏
𝑎

7. Solve the following pair of linear equations:

43x + 67y = – 24
67x + 43y = 24
8. (i) For which values of p and q, will the following pair of linear equations have infinitely many
solutions:
4x + 5y = 2 and (2p + 7q)x + (p + 8q)y = 2q – p + 1

(ii) For which values of a and b, will the following pair of linear equations represents coincident
lines?
x + 2y =1 and (a – b)x + (a + b)y = a + b – 2

9. The age of the father is three times the sum of ages of his two children. After 5 years, his age will
be two times the sum of the ages of his children. Find the present age of father.
10. A school is organizing a grand cultural event to show the talent of its students. To accommodate
the guests, the school plans to rent chairs and tables from a local supplier. It finds that rent for each
chair is ₹50 and for each table is ₹200. The school spends ₹30,000 for renting the chairs and tables.
Also, the total number of items (chairs and tables) rented are 300.
If the school rents 'x' chairs and 'y' tables, answer the following questions :
(i) Write down the pair of linear equations representing the given information.
(ii) (a) Find the number of chairs and number of tables rented by the school.
OR
(b) If the school wants to spend a maximum of ₹27,000 on 300 items (tables and chairs), then
find the number of chairs and tables it can rent.
(iii) What is maximum number of tables that can be rented in ₹30,000 if no chairs are rented?
11. In a chemistry lab, there is some quantity of 50% acid solution and some quantity of 25% acid
solution. How much of each should be mixed to make 10 litres of 40% acid solution?
