ABOUT THE AUTHOR

HEY THERE! I'M TEMITOPE JOHNSON, STUDENT WITH OVER 5 YEARS

OF HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF
ELECTRONICS. MY JOURNEY STARTED WITH ARDUINO AND ESP32
MICROCONTROLLERS, AND SINCE THEN, I'VE BEEN HOOKED ON
BUILDING CIRCUITS AND HAVING A BLAST WITH ALL THINGS
ELECTRONICS.

WHAT STARTED AS A CURIOUS EXPLORATION HAS GROWN INTO A

GENUINE PASSION. I LOVE BRINGING IDEAS TO LIFE THROUGH
CIRCUITS, EXPERIMENTING WITH SENSORS, AND PUSHING THE
BOUNDARIES OF WHAT'S POSSIBLE IN THE REALM OF
MICROCONTROLLERS. MY TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL HAS PROVIDED A
SOLID THEORETICAL FOUNDATION, BUT IT'S THE HANDS-ON
PROJECTS THAT TRULY FUEL MY EXCITEMENT FOR ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING.

WHETHER IT'S DESIGNING INNOVATIVE CIRCUITS OR DIVING INTO

PROGRAMMING CHALLENGES, I FIND JOY IN THE PROCESS OF
DISCOVERY. I'M ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR NEW OPPORTUNITIES
TO LEARN AND GROW IN THIS DYNAMIC FIELD.

STAY TUNED—I'M JUST GETTING STARTED, AND THE FUTURE HOLDS

EXCITING POSSIBILITIES IN THE EVER-EVOLVING WORLD OF
ELECTRONICS!

15 FUN PROJECTS WITH A 555 TIMER

NOTE
This book is for beginners so we do not go to
deep into details of the workings of the
circuits it's just meant for a fun guide for kids
getting started in electronics cheaply and
affordably. In the future, an advance guide is
coming out for people interested in building
their skills in analog electronics

To be able to use this book you should have a

basic understanding of how to use a
breadboard, and how to read schematics,
Dont worry i linked some useful resources
below

How a 555 Timer Works

15 FUN PROJECTS WITH A 555 TIMER

PROJECT 1: BLINKING LED

Components Required
555 Timer IC
LED or any output device
10uF Capacitor
Resistors: 100K, 1K, 220R
Breadboard
Few Breadboard Connectors
(5-12)V Power Supply

The resistors R1 and R2, along with the
capacitor C1 control the blinking rate.
While capacitor C1 and resistor R1 influence
both On and Off times of the LED,
Resistor R2 is responsible only for the On
time. So if you want to try out different
resistor values and change the flashing
rate, you can experiment by changing the
value of resistor R2.

APPLICATIONS
In turning indicator circuits of all types of
vehicles and cycles
In Strobe lights / SoS signalling circuits (To
signal that someone is in danger or needs help)
To control wiper motors and create to and fro
motion
In Light indicators used in cars (The relay
version of the flashing LED circuit is used)

PROJECT 2: SIREN CIRCUIT

Components Required
555 timer IC
8 Ohm Speaker
Transistors: 1 BC547, 1 BC557
Momentary Push Button Switch
Capacitors: 10nF, 100uF
Resistors: 39R, 22K, 33K, 100K, 2 * 220K

A tutorial on how to make
a wailing siren circuit using
555 timer IC on a
breadboard. This circuit can
be triggered by pressing a
push button switch and it
produces a tone with
increasing intensity for as
long as the push button is
pressed. After the push
button is released, the
intensity of siren sound
gradually reduces to zero.

PROJECT 3: LIGHT DEPENDENT
LIGHT SWITCH

Components Required
555 Timer IC
Light Dependant Resistor (LDR)
Resistors: 2 x 10K, 330R
100K Potentiometer
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
Breadboard
Few Breadboard Connectors
(5-12)V Power Supply

We used this circuit just to turn on an
LED. But in real life scenarios, you
might want this circuit to turn on AC
appliances or high power motors etc.
In order to achieve that you can
directly add a relay at the output and
connect AC loads to the relay.
You can also configure the 555 timer
to produce an audible frequency and
use this as a Light Alarm by connecting
a speaker at the output.
Applications
Used in automatic street light
circuits
Used to automatically turn on
wardrobe or locker lights whenever
they are opened
In Burglar alarm systems that
operate on visible light

PROJECT 4: TOUCH ON/OFF SWITCH

Components Required
555 Timer IC
1 or 2 LED’s (You can also connect buzzers etc.)
Resistors 2 x 10M, 2 x (The series resistor for
LED’s)
Breadboard
Few Breadboard Connectors
(5-12)V Power Supply

15 FUN PROJECTS WITH A 555 TIMER

Applications
This touch ON touch OFF switch
circuit, after adding a relay to its
output, can be used to replace
physical ON-OFF switches that
we use in our homes
Multiple circuits can be cascaded
to make a security system,
where the output turns ON only
when a certain pre-defined
combination of touches are made
on the available touch contacts
As a better ergonomic
replacement for Momentary Push
Button Switch

Breadboard
Few Breadboard Connectors
(5-9)V Power Supply
15 FUN PROJECTS WITH A 555 TIMER
We can adjust the gap between
successive beats, in real time, by
replacing the Resistor R1 with a
potentiometer. And multiple circuits
with different beat/ticking frequencies
can be combined to make audio
synthesizer circuits.
Applications
To add a mechanical feel to digital
clocks
In metronome circuits (musicians
use to maintain rhythm)
In hypnotic devices that require
flashing of lights and ticking
sounds

potentiometer control

Servo motors are controlled by using a PWM (Pulse Width

Modulated) signal as their input. the ON time of each PWM
pulse can be adjusted., so basically we’ve built a PWM
generator
The position of the servo arm depends on the width of ON
time (High pulse) of the input PWM signal. Generally, if we
set the width of ON time to 1 ms, the servo arm moves to
a 0-degree position. If we set the width of ON time to 3ms,
the servo arm moves to a 180-degree position. The width of
OFF time (Low Pulse) is maintained constant at around
18ms.
