Quick Tricks for Fast Calculation & Option Elimination

1. Square of a Number Ending in 5

Example: 75^2 -> 7 x (7+1) = 56 -> Answer: 5625

2. Multiply by 5 Instantly
Even: Divide by 2, then add 0.
Odd: Divide by 2, then add 5.
Example: 62 x 5 = 310, 37 x 5 = 185

3. Multiply by 11 (Two-Digit Numbers)

Example: 54 x 11 -> 5 (5+4) 4 -> 594

4. Multiply by 9 Shortcut
Multiply by 10 and subtract original number.
Example: 47 x 9 = (47 x 10) - 47 = 423

5. Multiply by 99 Shortcut
Multiply by 100 and subtract original number.
Example: 36 x 99 = (36 x 100) - 36 = 3564

6. Square Any Number Ending in 1

Formula: (N-1)^2 + 2N - 1
Example: 41^2 = 1681

7. Cube of Any Number Ending in 5

Multiply first digit by its successor and append 125.
Example: 25^3 = 15625

8. Division by 5 Shortcut
Multiply by 2 and shift decimal left.
Example: 245 ÷ 5 = 49.0
9. Fast Percentage Calculation
1% = Shift decimal two places left. Multiply accordingly.
Example: 16% of 250 = 40

10. Last Digit Trick for Power Calculations

Example: 67^123 -> Cycle of 7 (7,9,3,1) -> 123 mod 4 = 3 -> Last digit = 3

11. LCM Shortcut

LCM = (a x b) / GCD(a, b)
Example: LCM of 12 & 18 = 36

12. Remainder Trick (Digital Sum Method)

Example: 3425 ÷ 9 -> Sum digits (3+4+2+5=14) -> (1+4=5) -> Remainder = 5

13. Fast Approximation for Square Roots

Example: sqrt(180) is approximately 13.4

14. Ratio Elimination Trick

Example: Compare 3:4:5 and 6:8:10 -> Multiply by 2 -> Both same

15. Divisibility by 11 Trick

Example: 67273 -> (6+2+3) - (7+7) = 11 (Divisible)

16. Prime Number Check (Fast)

Example: Is 97 prime? Check divisibility by 2,3,5,7 -> No -> Prime

17. Alligation Rule for Mixtures

Example: Mix Rs. 40/kg & Rs. 60/kg in 2:3 ratio -> Avg = 52

18. Unit Digit Trick for Multiplication

Example: 237 x 824 x 956 -> Last digits (7 x 4 x 6 = 168) -> Final digit: 8
