OBJECTIVES AND METHODOLOGY
Law is ever dynamic the true sense of law is realized only when it is applied. The internships were
undertaken with the aim of acquiring a practical understanding of legal systems beyond the
academic curriculum. My key goals included observing real-time legal proceedings, applying
theoretical knowledge in professional settings, and building essential skills in legal research,
drafting, and communication. Through these internships, I aimed to understand court procedures,
legal drafting, client interaction, and the operational structure of law firms and legal departments.
My learning approach was primarily experiential, supported by doctrinal research. I observed court
proceedings, assisted in drafting legal documents, and conducted research using legal databases
such as SCC Online and Manupatra. Regular interaction with legal professionals and participation
in office discussions further enhanced my understanding of both procedural and substantive law.
OBSERVATIONS
I. Internship at Khaitan & Co., Bengaluru (July 2024 – August 2024)
During my internship at Khaitan & Co., one of India’s leading full-service law firms, I was
assigned to the General Corporate (GC) team. This experience provided an immersive introduction
to the intricate workings of corporate legal practice, particularly within the framework of
regulatory compliance, transaction support, and advisory functions.
Key Observations:
1. Exposure to Corporate Transactions:
I was involved in reviewing corporate transactions and understanding the legal documentation
required for various business activities. This included interpreting advisory notes issued to clients,
understanding shareholder arrangements, and analyzing the legal structure of proposed
transactions. These assignments enabled me to appreciate the importance of clarity, risk allocation,
and strategic structuring in commercial agreements.
2. Regulatory Compliance and Due Diligence:
A major portion of my work focused on regulatory compliance, specifically in relation to
transactions involving Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and banking institutions. I
assisted in due diligence exercises, examining documentation and ensuring alignment with
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. This helped me grasp the compliance expectations
governing corporate finance and the practical implications of sector-specific regulatory policies.
3. In-Depth Legal Research:
I conducted targeted legal research on several important issues, including foreign direct investment
(FDI) under the IRDAI framework. Additionally, I researched on employmentrelated legislations
such as the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947, and the Industrial Employment
(Standing Orders) Act, 1946. These research tasks honed my ability to interpret statutes, analyze
regulatory circulars, and synthesize information relevant to client advisory work.
4. Contractual and Advisory Drafting:
I contributed to the drafting and review of corporate agreements, non-disclosure agreements, and
internal advisories. Through this, I developed a nuanced understanding of the structure and legal
implications of various clauses, especially those related to confidentiality, indemnity, and dispute
resolution. The drafting process helped sharpen my legal writing, attention to detail, and alignment
with the firm’s formatting and legal standards.
5. Professional Environment and Mentorship:
Working within a structured, fast-paced corporate law environment introduced me to the rigors and
discipline expected at a top-tier firm. I gained insight into the coordination between legal teams
and clients, and received constructive feedback from associates and senior counsels, which helped
refine my approach to research and analysis.
II. Internship at Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance, Mumbai (Apr 2024 – May
2024)
This internship provided valuable insights into the intersection of legal practice and insurance
operations. Working within the legal and compliance team, I was exposed to various aspects of
contract management, regulatory interpretation, and internal legal documentation in a corporate
environment.

I was involved in reviewing critical commercial contracts such as Service-Level Agreements
(SLAs), Master Service Agreements (MSAs), and brokerage agreements. This task helped me
understand how legal risk is addressed in contractual language and sharpened my ability to
identify key clauses related to liability, termination, indemnity, and dispute resolution.
2. Regulatory Compliance and IRDAI Research:
I conducted research on multiple IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of
India) guidelines applicable to life insurance companies. This included studying their application
to Credit Life Insurance products and intra-day indemnity bonds. Through this, I developed a
better understanding of the regulatory environment that governs life insurers and the practical
application of statutory guidelines.
3. Drafting and Data Privacy:
I drafted several Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) and assisted in reviewing internal
compliance policies related to data privacy. Researching applicable laws on data protection
strengthened my awareness of corporate confidentiality standards and the need for safeguarding
personal data in financial institutions.

The internship emphasized the importance of clear legal communication and collaboration within
in-house legal teams. I gained an appreciation for the legal department’s role in balancing
business objectives with regulatory adherence.

experience clarified how legal arguments are structured and presented, and deepened my
understanding of the adversarial system.

conducted within the chambers. These exercises sharpened my advocacy, public speaking, and
negotiation skills, offering a practical environment to apply legal principles and build confidence.

INFERENCES
1) Practical Insight into the Legal System:
The internships collectively provided a well-rounded view of the legal profession by exposing
me to both litigation and corporate practice. Observing court proceedings in civil and
criminal matters, particularly during my time at trial courts and the High Court, allowed me
to understand procedural intricacies, courtroom behaviour, and the strategic application of
law. My corporate internships, especially in the insurance and general corporate sectors,
offered a contrasting view focusing on regulatory compliance, contract management, and
internal legal advisory. This balance between litigation and corporate exposure clarified how
diverse legal skills are applied in different settings.
2) Enhanced Research and Writing Skills:
Legal research formed the backbone of most of my assignments from regulatory due
diligence to content creation. Whether studying IRDAI and RBI regulations or drafting legal
content for publication, I consistently worked with statutes, notifications, and case law. This
improved my ability to extract relevant principles, analyse legal texts critically, and present
findings clearly. Drafting legal notices, contracts, and complaints also helped refine my
writing style, focusing on clarity, precision, and relevance.
3) Strengthened Legal Reasoning and Analysis:
The diversity of cases I encountered ranging from criminal defamation and cheque bounce
matters to corporate compliance and labour disputes which have strengthened my ability to
reason through complex legal issues. I learned how to identify key facts, apply the
appropriate legal framework, and assess practical implications. This was particularly evident
in assignments involving succession laws, employment codes, and procedural applications in
court.
4) Interdisciplinary Learning and Professional Growth:
In some settings, especially within in-house legal teams and HR-focused environments, I saw
how law intersects with business management, data privacy, and internal policy-making.
These experiences emphasized the growing need for lawyers to be flexible, context-aware,
and able to communicate legal concepts effectively across departments. It also helped me
develop essential soft skills—like teamwork, communication, and time management—that
are integral to professional legal practice.
5) Understanding of Legal Ethics and Workplace Culture:
Through interactions with senior advocates, in-house counsel, and fellow interns, I gained a
deeper appreciation for professional ethics, confidentiality, and the importance of decorum in
legal practice. Whether working in formal law firm settings or independent chambers, I
observed the significance of integrity, diligence, and accountability. These values have shaped
my understanding of what it means to be a responsible and ethical legal professional.
