IELTS Speaking Test – Band 7 Sample Answers

Part 1: Introduction and Interview

1. 1. What do you do?

Well, I’m currently studying Office Administration – Health Services at Centennial College.
Alongside that, I work part-time as a pharmacy assistant at Shoppers Drug Mart. It’s a great
way to apply what I learn in a real-life setting.

2. 2. Why did you choose this course?

I already have a background in pharmacy from my home country. I chose this course to
enhance my administrative and business skills so I can combine both medical knowledge
and office experience in Canada.

3. 3. Do you like your field of study or work?

Yes, I really enjoy working in the pharmacy field. Helping patients and providing medication
advice is very rewarding. Of course, dealing with difficult customers can be challenging, but
I try to stay calm and polite.

4. 4. What is your favourite colour?

I’ve always loved the colour blue. It gives me a calm and peaceful feeling. I enjoy wearing
blue clothes and even love walking by the lake just to enjoy the different shades of blue in
the water.

5. 5. Have you ever bought something because of its colour?

Yes, I have! Once, I bought a blue ball for my son just because I liked the colour. It was funny
because he thought it looked strange, but I couldn’t resist the colour.

6. 6. Do people in your country wear bright colours?

Yes, many people in my country love wearing bright colours, especially during festivals and
celebrations. I personally used to enjoy them, but recently I prefer dark colours to look
slimmer.

7. 7. Have you ever painted a room?

I haven’t painted a room myself, but I recently watched my friend paint his room beige. He
said it makes the room look larger and brighter, and I think he was right.

Part 2: Cue Card

Describe a time when you told the truth but it was not easy to do so.
A few months ago, my son asked me for feedback on his soccer performance. He was playing
as a defender, but I noticed that he wasn’t doing very well. It was hard to tell him the truth
because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. However, I decided to be honest. I gently told him
that he was doing okay, but needed more practice to improve his skills. At first, he was
upset, but later he appreciated my honesty. He started training more, and now he has
improved a lot. It was a difficult conversation, but I’m glad I told the truth.

Part 3: Discussion
8. 1. Do you think telling the truth is always the best choice?

Yes, I believe honesty is usually the best policy. Telling the truth helps build trust and strong
relationships, even if the truth is hard to hear.

9. 2. Why do people sometimes find it easy to lie?

People often lie to avoid getting into trouble or hurting someone’s feelings. Sometimes, it’s
easier to lie than face the consequences of telling the truth.

10. 3. Are there situations when it’s better not to tell the truth?

In rare cases, yes. For example, if telling the truth could seriously hurt someone’s feelings or
cause conflict, it might be better to stay silent or speak carefully.

11. 4. Should children always be encouraged to tell the truth?

Yes, children should be taught to value honesty from a young age. It helps them build strong
morals and take responsibility for their actions.

12. 5. Can professionals like lawyers or psychologists tell if someone is lying?

Sometimes they can. Psychologists, for example, can observe body language, facial
expressions, and tone of voice to detect dishonesty.

13. 6. What effects do lies have on relationships?

Lies can destroy trust in any relationship. Whether it’s with a friend, spouse, or family
member, once trust is broken, it’s very hard to rebuild.
