Course description: Differential calculus for functions of two or more variables. Topics: vectors and
vector-valued functions in 2-space and 3-space, tangent and normal vectors,
curvature, functions of two or more variables, partial derivatives and
differentiability, directional derivatives and gradients, maxima and minima,
optimization using Lagrange multipliers.
Prerequisites: Calculus AB, BC or equivalent
Homework: Homework is assigned each week. It will contain online (true/false, multiple-choice) and offline
(textbook and other) exercises. All exercises are given to you for practice; they will not be counted
towards your grade. You are not expected to submit them.
Exams: There are two tests during the semester: the midterm and the final. They need to be taken any time
during designated exam weeks (see the Course Schedule). Exams are 3 hours long, “paper & pencil”,
and “closed book”. You will be given a feedback and your test score. The final exam is not
cumulative.
Students from who know each other (through school, friends, etc.) need to contact the instructor
and make efforts to take their exams at the same time.
Exam proctoring: All exams must be proctored. Depending on the type of the grade (letter grade or
Pass/NC), the proctoring requirements vary.
Pass/NC parent/guardian proctoring
Letter grade independent proctoring
To receive a letter grade you need to have both exams independently proctored. More details about people
who can serve as independent proctors: https://ulo.stanford.edu/policies-ulo#grading. Specific information
on proctor registration will be provided by your instructor.
Grading: Quizzes – 10%, Midterm – 45%, Final – 45%
The letter grade scale:
A: 86-100 B+: 80-82 C+: 70-72 NP: <60
A-: 83-85 B : 76-79 C: 65-69
B-: 73-75 C-: 60-64
A non-letter grade can be requested at any time during the term. In this case, a course score of 60% or
above will appear as “CR” on your transcript. Scores below 60% are equivalent to a “W” and will not appear
on your transcript.
Adobe Connect live sessions:
An AC live class session is held weekly. Attendance is recommended but not mandatory. (Recordings will be
available.) Additionally, you are always welcome to drop in during the AC live office hour held by your
instructor if you have questions. Alternatively, you can use email instead to discuss them throughout the
week.
AC meeting and/or AC office hour times will be posted in Canvas.
ULO honor code:
During exams students/proctors will need to carefully and honestly follow provided instructions. Students
must work alone, within stated time limits with no help from others and without assistance from books,
notes, or other aids.
ULO has a zero-tolerance policy towards academic dishonesty. As a part of the Continuing Studies Program
at Stanford University, we reserve the rights stated within their Student Code of Conduct:
