GROWING PLANTS- Q1. Last year, there was not enough rainfall. Mohanlal’s crops did not do well but his neighbor
Shyamlal’s crops grew very well. What did Shyamlal do that Mohanlal did not do? Ans: Shyamlal must have irrigated
(watered) the crops which is why his crops grew well even when there was not enough rainfall.
Q2. How does step farming help in controlling floods on the mountains? Ans: Step farming slows down the force of
water in the slopes. It helps in preventing the runoff of water which can bring floods in the valley or foot hills.
Q3. Maya threw some seeds out of the window. Some of those seeds fell on the road. She was surprised to see that
they all germinated. How did the seeds germinate without soil? Ans: For a seed to grow, mature and germinate, it
requires some important factors like- water, oxygen and proper temperature. All the seeds that Maya threw must
have received the right amount of air, water and warmth needed for germination. So the seeds germinated without
soil.
Q4. What would happen if the dispersal of seeds did not happen? Ans: If the seeds do not get dispersed then they
would compete for air, water, light, nutrients and space to grow. As a result, many of them would die.
Q5. Eating crops that have been sprayed with chemical pesticides can affect our health. Discuss how and judge. Ans:
Pesticides are chemicals used in agriculture to protect crops against pests. But they are potentially toxic to humans.
It may result in acute poisoning or long- term health effects like cancer and adverse effects on reproduction, immune
and nervous system.
what are the two types of seeds called? Give one example for each. 2) Which plant has the smallest and the largest
seed?

Q1. Seeds need warmth to sprout. So would a roasted seed sprout faster? Ans: No, a roasted seed would not sprout
faster. Too much heat would harm the baby plant inside the seed.
Q2. Where does a seed get its roots and leaves from? Ans: A seed gets its roots and leaves from its cotyledons.
Q3. Chetna ate watermelon and buried the seeds in her garden, to get many watermelon plants. However, out of all
only few seeds germinated. Why did this happen? Ans: Plants need space, sunlight, nutrients and water from the soil
to grow. If grown too close to each other, the plants will not get sufficient space and nutrients from the soil and not
grow well. Chetna must have buried the seeds too close to one another, that is why only few watermelon seeds
germinated.
Q4. Why can’t all seeds be dispersed by water? Ans: Only seeds or fruits of plants that grow in or near flowing water
get dispersed by water. Also if the seeds are spongy or have a fibrous covering, they can float on water. So we can
say that all seeds can’t be dispersed by water.

CW 1. Case study: Take a deep breath and hold it for a little while. Feel your chest bones and the backbone by gently
pressing the middle of the chest and back at the same time. We see that the ribs are curiously bent. They join the
chest bone and the backbone together to form a box. This is called the rib cage. There are 12 ribs on each side of
chest. Some important internal organs of our body like the heart and lungs lie protected inside this cage. The
backbone is made up of many small bones called vertebrae. It consists of 33 vertebrae. The rib cage is joined to
these bones.
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions carefully: a. How many vertebrae are there in our backbone?
b. What is the rib cage? Mention the function of our rib cage. c. Which important role does the backbone play in
the locomotion of our body?
2. Match the following joints in Column – I with their positions in Column – II Column – I Column – II a. Pivot i Elbow

Guided CW. 1. When you have cold and cough, your parents ask you not to go to school. Why?
2. It’s lunch time and Ria’s mother has served her lunch. She is having salad made of cucumber, lettuce, grapes and
tomatoes, curd, rice, roti, daal. Do you think her lunch is a balanced meal? Give reason for your answer.
3. We should always keep food covered, and cook and serve food in clean utensils. Why?
ANSWERS: 1. Ans: When I have cold and cough, my parents do not allow me to go to school because common cold is
a communicable disease and can spread through direct contact. If I cough or sneeze, the germs causing the disease
are released into the air and can affect my classmates.
2. Ans: No, Ria is not having a balanced meal during lunch, because food items containing fats are missing in her
lunch.
3. Ans: We should always keep food covered, and cook and serve food in clean utensils because uncovered food and
water attract flies. Flies carry germs in their bodies and pass them on to the uncovered food and water when they sit
on them. If we eat that food containing germs, it can cause diseases like typhoid and cholera.
