Is English a difficult language to learn?

Learning English can be hard for many reasons. First, the language has a very large number of words, perhaps as many as
one million. That is a lot more than many other languages, for example Spanish, which has about 100,000, and French, with
about 135,000. Some websites say that Arabic has 12 million words, but that is not true. The real figure is closer to 200,000.
And, of course, people do not know all the words in their own language. For example, the average English person only uses
about 30,000 words.

The second hard thing about English is pronunciation. English sounds can be difficult, because the way a word is spelled
might not show how it should be said. English only has five vowel letters, but there are 20 vowel sounds. So, for example,
'ou' has many sounds, including the different ones in 'though', 'through', 'thought', and 'tough'.

Third, there is quite a big difference in English between formal language, such as in English newspapers and textbooks, and
the language of the ordinary person. We might write 'receive' an email but say 'get' an email, or use 'return' a book when
writing, but say 'give back' a book, unless, for some reason, you are speaking to the King of England.

Lastly, English has 12 verb tenses, including the present perfect, which is very difficult for many language learners. French
has 15, German has six, and Arabic just three. Some languages have none but use adverbs or other words instead.

However, experts who study languages say all languages are equally difficult to learn. It's just that the problems are in
different places in each language.
