Sheet 1

The document contains a series of engineering problems related to building materials and testing, focusing on calculations involving elongation, load compression, and stress in various materials such as steel, cast iron, and reinforced concrete. Each problem provides specific parameters like dimensions, material properties, and allowable stresses to determine outcomes such as elongation, load capacity, and stress levels. The problems are designed for students in the Faculty of Engineering, specifically within the Department of Architecture.

Sheet 1

1- The metallic bar shown below has 3 cm diameter and 2000 ton/cm2 modulus of elasticity. Calculate the total
elongation.

2- A steel bar 50 mm in
diameter and 2 m long is surrounded by a shell of a cast iron 5 mm thick.
Compute the load that will compress the combined bar a total of 0.8 mm in the
length of 2 m. For steel, E = 200 GPa, and
for cast iron, E = 100 GPa.

3- A rigid block of mass M is supported by three symmetrically spaced rods as

shown in fig P-236. Each copper rod has an area of 900 mm2; E = 120 GPa; and the allowable stress is 70
MPa. The steel rod has an area of 1200 mm2; E = 200 GPa; and the
allowable stress is 140 MPa. Determine the largest mass M which can be
supported.

4- A reinforced concrete column 200 mm in diameter is designed to carry an

axial compressive load of 300 kN. Determine the required area of the reinforcing steel if
the allowable stresses are 6 MPa and 120 MPa for the concrete and steel, respectively. Use
Eco = 14 GPa and Est = 200 GPa.

5- A reinforced concrete column was loaded with 40-ton compressive load. The column cross
section is 30 cm x 30 cm the reinforcement steel is 4 bars with 16 mm diameter. Estimate
the stress in concrete and steel reinforcement. The concrete modulus of elasticity equals 180 ton/cm2 and the
steel reinforcement modulus of elasticity equals 2000 ton/cm2.

6- A (40 x 60) cm2 reinforced concrete column was reinforced with 8Ø22 steel bars. Calculate the maximum safe
load can the column carry if the maximum allowable stress for concrete equals 55 kg/cm2 and calculate the

1
corresponding stress in the steel bars reinforcement. Assume the ratio between the modulus of elasticity for
steel and concrete equals 15.
