Literature Review
Project
GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION
Literature Review Project Report (50 Marks)

REPORT PREPARATION:

In preparing the report of Literature Survey, you should keep in mind the area of your
proposed research work in which you want to do research for PhD. Degree. Your Literature
Review should be aimed to cover every aspect of that research area. The report should be
prepared such that it should have the potential of publication as ‘Review Article’ in a journal.
Depending on the area of research, it should be kept between 5,000-10,000 words.

Research and research related activities are driven by innovation and ideas and it is difficult to
bind it by certain guidelines. Scientific drafting requires quantitative support in form of data
which is measured or obtained from various methods in the different areas of research,
therefore the organization of manuscript varies with the research area. It is expected from
students to draft the report of Literature survey in consultation with their PhD supervisor on
the basis of the research area of their PhD research work. However, following are the few
points which are not mandatory but can be proved useful for students while preparing the
report of Literature Survey.

The front page of the Report should be prepared according to the template shown in
Appendix ‘B’

INTRODUCTION:

It should have

 Current research activities in that research area.

 Significance of the research (in academics, technology, society and, if appropriate, other
fields)

OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH:

After a systematic introduction of the research area of your interest, subdivide the report into
sections according to the points discussed in the introduction part of the report.
Under those heading of sections and subsections you should try to include

 Historical perspectives. (Beginning of the research area, Evolution of the research area)
 The major approach (es) (conceptual, theoretical, empirical and experimental) and rationale
for approach.
 A comparison of those approaches (contradictions & similarities)
 Unaddressed issues by those approaches
 Possible Solutions

REFERENCING:

Your references should provide the reader with a good sense of your grasp on the literature. Be
sure to reference texts and resources that you think will play a large role in your analysis.
Remember that this is not simply a bibliography listing ‘everything written on the subject’.
Rather, it should show critical reflection in the selection of appropriate texts.

The examples of various kinds of bibliographic references are given in ‘Appendix A’.
