• We use was, were as the past form of am, is, are. You can see the affirmative, negative and
question forms with was / were below:

The Hanging Gardens of Bablyon are one of the Seven


Wonders of the Ancient World. The Gardens were
in the ancient city Bablyon, an important city in the
Mesopotamian civilization. Historians do not know
exactly where the gardens were, but they think they
were in what is Iraq today. They were huge, beautiful
gardens full of plants and flowers, and they were built
for a king’s wife because she was sad and missed her
homeland. Some people, however, don’t believe that
the gardens were real. They say that the gardens were
only spoken of in stories, and there is no proof that they
really were in the city of Babylon.

The Colossos of Rhodes is one of the Seven Wonders


of the Ancient World. The Colossos of Rhodes was a
giant statue of the Greek sun god Helios, who was an
important god. It was on the Greek island of Rhodes,
and it was built to celebrate the Greeks winning a battle
against Cyprus. The statue was more than 30 meters
tall! It was one of the tallest statues in the ancient world.
It was very impressive but an earthquake made it fall
down in 226BC. We know it was real because there are
many historical documents about its construction and
the earthquake.

simple past tense

• We use past simple tense to talk about states or actions that happened and finished in the
past.
• We generally use the suffix -ed after the main verbs in past simple sentences. However,
when the main verb is an irregular one, then the past form of this verb must be used.

together. This also helps the reader or listener understand what happened better. One of
the most important ways to link ideas is to sequence them. Sequencing refers to the order
in which the events happened. See the most common sequencing words both in written
and spoken English.

Anatolia is the majority of the Republic of Turkey. People think that it is the heart-land of the country.
