Time Allowed: 1 hour 30 minutes

Solutions

Section B (30 marks)

12. Figure 1 shows a triangular pyramid ABCD. It is given that ∠BAC = ∠DAB = ∠DAC = 90°,
AB = AC = 6 cm and AD = 12 cm.
(a) Find the volume of the pyramid ABCD. (2 marks)
(b) Find the area of the face BCD. (3 marks)
(c) The pyramid is placed so that face BCD is horizontal (figure 2). With BCD as the base,
find the height of the pyramid. (2 marks)
(d) Let M and N be the mid-point of BD and CD respectively. The pyramid is cut along the

So ΔBCD is isosceles.
Let M be the mid-point of BC, so DM ⊥ BC.

( 6 5 ) + (3 2 )
2 2
DM = = 9 2 cm 1M

area of ΔBCD =
1
2
DM  BC =

( )(
9 2 6 2 )
= 54 cm2 1A
1
(c) (area of ΔBCD) (height) = volume of ABCD 1M
3
72  3
height = = 4 cm 1A
54
(d) Method 1
MNCD as base, same height as pyramid ABCD
Since M, N are mid-points, ΔAMN and ΔABC are similar 1
area of ΔAMN : area of ΔABC = AM2 : AB2 = 1 : 4 1M
So, area of MNCB : area of ΔABC = (4 – 1) : 4 = 3 : 4
3
Hence the volume of ABCNM = volume of ABCD
4
3
= (72) = 54 cm3 1A
4
Method 2
Let Q be the mid-point of AD. Pyramid QMND is similar to ABCD
So volume of QMND : volume of ABCD = 13 : 23 = 1 : 8 1M
1
Hence the volume of QMND = volume of ABCD
8
Note that pyramid QMNA is identical to pyramid QMND, so their volumes are the same 1
Hence the volume of ABCNM
= volume of ABCD – volume of QMND – volume of QMNA
1 1 3
=(1– – ) volume of ABCD = (72) = 54 cm3 1A
8 8 4
Marker’s Comment: (a) Fair. Many students did not notice that AD is the height of the pyramid.
(b) Fair. Many students could not find the height DM.
(c) Fair.
(d) Poor. Many students did not attempt this part.

13. Let A(–2, 0), B(6, 0) and C(5, 7) be the three vertices of a triangle. It is given that G is the
centroid of ABC.

F.3 Final Exam 2022-2023 Page 2 of 6 Math 1B

(a) Write down the coordinates of G . (1 mark)

(b) (i) If D is a point on the perpendicular bisector of AB, write down the x-coordinate of D.
(ii) Find the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AC.
(iii) Find the coordinates of the circumcentre of ABC.
(5 marks)

(c) Denote the circumcentre of ABC by K. Let P be a point on the line passing through K
and G such that KG : GP = 1 : 2 and G is between K and P.
(i) Find the coordinates of P.
(ii) Show that P is the orthocentre of ABC.
(4 marks)

 x=2
(iii) Solving  1M
x + y = 5
x = 2, y = 3
So the coordinates of the circumcentre = (2, 3) 1A

(c) (i) Let P = (s, t). Note that G =  3,  and K = (2, 3)

2(2) + 1( s) 2(3) + 1(t ) 7
we have = 3 and = 1M
2 +1 2 +1 3
So, s = 5, t = 1
i.e. P = (5, 1) 1A
(ii) PC is vertical, so PC ⊥ AB.
P lies on the altitude from C

mPB = = – 1, so mPB mAC = – 1.
6−5
So, PB ⊥ AC, so P lies on the altitude from B either 1
Hence P is the orthocentre of ΔABC. (1 f.t.)
Marker’s Comment: (a) Good.
(b) (i) Good.
(ii) Satisfactory.
(iii) Satisfactory.
(c) (i) Satisfactory. Some students were able to use point of division formula.
(ii) Fair. Many students failed to check that P lies on the altitudes.

14. The figure shows a triangle ABC. The perpendicular bisector of BC intersects the angle bisector
of BAC at P. Let X and Y be the feet of the perpendiculars from P to AB and AC respectively.

(a) Show that PB = PC. (1 mark)

(b) Show that PX = PY. (1 mark)
(c) Show that ΔPBX and ΔPCY are congruent. (2 marks)
(d) Show that ∠BPC = 180° – ∠BAC.
1
Hence, show that ∠BCP = ∠BAC. (3 marks)
2
(e) Q is a point on AP such that PQ = PC. Show that Q is the in-centre of ΔABC.
(3 marks)
(a) As P lies on the perpendicular bisector of BC,

PB = PC. 1
(b) P lies on the angle bisector of ∠BAC, so P is equidistance from AB and AC.

i.e. PX = PY 1
(c) PB = PC (proved in (a))

F.3 Final Exam 2022-2023 Page 4 of 6 Math 1B

PX = PY (proved in (b))
∠BXP = ∠CYP = 90° (given) 1 (any 2 conditions)

So, ΔPBX  ΔPCY (RHS) 1

(d) ∠BPX =∠CPY (corr. ∠s,  Δs)
So, ∠BPC = ∠BPX + ∠XPC
= ∠CPY + ∠XPC
= ∠XPY 1

In quadrilateral XBYA
90° + ∠XPY + 90° + ∠XAY = 360°
So ∠XPY = 180° – ∠XAY
So ∠BPC= ∠XPY
= 180° – ∠XAY
= 180° – ∠BAC 1

As PB = PC (proved in (a))
∠BCP = ∠CBP (base ∠s, isos. Δ)
So ∠BCP + ∠CBP + ∠BPC = 180° (∠ sum of Δ)
2∠BCP + (180° – ∠BAC) = 180° (proved)
2∠BCP = ∠BAC
1
∠BCP = ∠BAC 1
2
(e) As Q lies on AP, an angle bisector of ΔABC, it suffices to show that
QC bisects ∠BCA
Let x = ∠QCB, then ∠QCA = ∠BCA – x
∠PQC = ∠QAC + ∠QCA = (ext.∠ of Δ)
1
= ∠BAC +∠BCA – x
2
Since PQ = PC (given),
∠PQC =∠PCQ (base ∠s, isos. Δ)
1
∠BAC +∠BCA – x = ∠BCP +∠QCB
2
1 1
∠BAC +∠BCA – x = ∠BAC + x (by (d))
2 2
∠BCA = 2x

F.3 Final Exam 2022-2023 Page 5 of 6 Math 1B

1
So x = ∠BCA 1
2
Hence QC is an angle bisector of ΔABC.
So Q lies on two angle bisectors of ΔABC.
Hence Q is the in-centre of ΔABC. 1
Marker’s Comment : (a) Good.
(b) Good.
(c) Satisfactory. Many students proved the congruent triangles with wrong conditions (SAS) or even
(SSA).
(d) Fair. Many students were able to use the pair of corresponding angles ∠BPX ,∠CPY of the
congruent triangles proved in (c). Some students were able to establish the second statement from
the first statement.
(e) Poor.
