INTRODUCTION OF ROAD VEHICLES
PERFORMANCE
Road vehicle performance is a measure of how
well a vehicle can accelerate, decelerate, climb
hills, and reach its maximum speed. It is
influenced by a combination of factors including
the vehicle's engine power, weight,
aerodynamics, and the road conditions. Key
aspects of performance include tractive effort,
resistance (aerodynamic, rolling, and grade), and
acceleration.
TRACTIVE
EFFORT AND
RESISTANCE
Tractive effort and resistance are opposing
forces that determine a vehicle's ability to move.
Tractive effort is the force that propels the
vehicle forward, while resistance is the force that
opposes motion. Essentially, tractive effort is what
gets the vehicle moving, and resistance is what
tries to stop it
TRACTIVE EFFORT AND
RESISTANCE
Ra = aerodynamic resistance in lb,
Ryf = rolling resistance of the front tires in lb,
Rir = rolling resistance of the rear tires in lb,
Ff = available tractive effort of the front tires in Ib,
F, = available tractive effort of the rear tires in lb,
W = total vehicle weight in lb,
0g = angle of the grade in degrees,
m = vehicle mass in slugs, and
a = acceleration in ft/s*.
Aerodynamic resistance, also known
as drag or air resistance,is the force
AERODYNAMIC
that opposes the motion of an object
moving through the air. It acts in the
RESISTANCE
opposite direction to the object's
movement and is a type of frictional
force caused by the air molecules
colliding with the object
ROLLING
RESISTANCE
Rolling resistance is defined as the opposing force that a
rolling body experiences upon contact with a surface,
leading to energy loss that is not fully recoverable. It
significantly affects the motion and energy consumption
of vehicles, with higher resistance observed on rough
surfaces compared to smoother ones

GRADE RESISTANCE
Grade resistance is the force that opposes a
vehicle's motion when traveling uphill due to
gravity's component acting along the slope. It's
a key factor in determining a vehicle's ability to
climb and descend hills, and it's calculated
using the formula: F = W * sin(θ), where F is the
grade resistance, W is the vehicle's weight, and
θ (theta) is the angle of the slope
