Introduction
Thank you for choosing BlueTraker® SSAS - the Ship Security Alert System based on Iridium
Satellite Network. This document contains the description of the operation and initial setup
instructions for BlueTraker® SSAS.
The BlueTraker® SSAS system consists of:
• on-board hardware (BlueTraker® SSAS terminal, ConBox SSAS wiring cabinet, and Alert
Buttons),
• TDS3 server (used for secure processing, storage, re-formatting, and forwarding the
SSAS data),
• SecondScreen application (a web-based application for SSAS configuration and vessel
tracking and monitoring).
In order to get the maximum performance of your new BlueTraker® SSAS system, please note
and follow the installation guidelines precisely.
BlueTraker® SSAS terminal has a built-in Iridium Satellite Network transceiver, which transmits
all messages from the vessel to the TDS3 server via Iridium Satellite Network. Messages are only
transmitted if the Iridium transceiver has a valid Iridium subscription, so please make sure your
Iridium subscription is valid before testing the BlueTraker® SSAS.
In addition to this manual, the BlueTraker® SSAS Installation Manual and SecondScreen User
Manual are necessary for error-free and efficient use of the BlueTraker® SSAS system.
We highly recommend that you read the manuals before you start using the equipment.
Note
Any responsibility or liability for loss or damage in connection with the use of this product and the
accompanying documentation is disclaimed. The information in this manual is furnished for
informational use only, is subject to change without notice, may contain errors or inaccuracies,
and represents no commitment whatsoever.
Legislation
BlueTraker® SSAS system has been developed to meet the Ship Security Alert Systems
requirements as specified in the SOLAS amendments, chapter XI, Annex 6 (Dec. 2002). The
details are described in the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code)*. The
objective of this code is to establish an international framework for detecting and assessing
security threats and taking preventive measures against security incidents affecting ships or port
facilities used in international trade.
SOLAS Resolution XI-2/6
As piracy and terrorist attacks have increased over the years, IMO has defined a set of mandatory
requirements in the SOLAS Resolution XI-2/6 to improve security for ships.
The new SOLAS resolution 6 states that the Ship Security Alert System shall provide ships with
two alarm buttons, which can be activated in case of piracy or terrorist attack. The alarm is a
covert signal, which will have no sound and no flashing lights so that it is in no way obvious to
any intruders on-board the ship.
The SOLAS Resolution XI-2/6 requires vessels of +500 GT (Gross Tons) constructed before 01
July 2004 to install a Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) no later than the first radio survey after
01 July 2004. Other Cargo ships of +500 GT and mobile offshore drilling units constructed before
01 July 2004 must be fitted no later than the first radio survey after 01 July 2006.
The following vessels are required to have a Ship Security Alert System installed:
Approvals
IMO and the International Committee have not specified the required technical details for an
SSAS system but have laid out flexible guidelines for SSAS solutions. This provides manufacturers
with an opportunity to develop systems that are not completely unified, thus making it more
difficult for an aggressor on-board a vessel to identify the equipment. National Authorities or the
relevant Classification Society must approve a vessel's SSAS installation as part of the Ship
Security Plan.

General description
BlueTraker® SSAS system comprises of:
• on-board hardware:
o BlueTraker® SSAS terminal.
o ConBox SSAS wiring cabinet (with selector key).
o Two Alert Buttons (the third optional Alert Button may be included – it depends on
your purchased order).
o Other accessories (mounting accessory – bracketry kit; connecting cable -
MainCableSet; security seal; credentials)
• TDS3 server (which is used for secure processing, storage, re-formatting, and forwarding
of the SSAS data), and
• SecondScreen application (a web-based application for SSAS configuration and vessel
tracking and monitoring).
The BlueTraker® SSAS system utilizes an Iridium satellite communications network with global
coverage – it covers A1, A2, A3, and A4 sea areas.
Figure 2: BlueTraker® SSAS on-board hardware overview
When SSAS Alert is activated, an SSAS Alert message is generated and transmitted from the
BlueTraker® SSAS terminal via the Iridium Satellite network to the TDS3 server. The SSAS Alert
message includes an identification of the vessel and its position. TDS3 server then forms a user-
friendly SSAS Alert message and sends it to predefined recipients (up to 5 SMS numbers and/or
up to 5 e-mail addresses). One typical recipient is the Research and Rescue Centre in the vessel's
country of registration.
When SSAS Alert is activated, the BlueTraker® SSAS terminal starts to send SSAS Alert Navigation
messages at 15 minutes intervals until SSAS Alert is confirmed & deactivated from one of the
SSAS Alert message recipients. The SSAS Alert can be confirmed & deactivated only by visiting
the temporary URL provided in the SSAS Alert message.
In case no one confirms & deactivates the alert within 24 hours from the activation, the unit itself
deactivates the SSAS Alert.
The ship-owner is responsible for setting up a security plan in which he specifies who
shall receive the SSAS messages and who is to be contacted.
BlueTraker® SSAS tracking and monitoring overview
As mentioned, the BlueTraker® SSAS system can also be used for vessel tracking and monitoring.
The default (minimal) position reporting rate is approximately one (1) report per day, which is
included in the basic SSAS functionalities.
This reporting interval can be more frequent and can be set according to the wishes of the
customer (ship-owner). Please contact your sales representative if you would like to have more
frequent position reports.
Via position reports, the ship-owner will be able to follow the position of the ship on the
SecondScreen application or on other SSAS Service Providers applications (Transas, PoleStar,
etc.). According to the chosen reporting interval, the BlueTraker® SSAS system will be sending
position reports containing the latest position information, which the BlueTraker® SSAS terminal
retrieves from the GPS.
The BlueTraker® SSAS terminal sends SSAS Navigation (position) messages continuously at a
predetermined time interval (RIC), and it can also send a position report upon a request
(Pooling).
Scheduled messages/reports:
• SSAS Navigation (message sent approximately once per day, or more often in
accordance with the agreement with EMA company (more frequent reporting may be
subject to additional charges)).
Please note that unscheduled messages are treated differently than usual SSAS Navigation
messages, and they generate an event or an alert in the SecondScreen application. Also, all above
mentioned SSAS messages are visible in the SecondScreen application's "BT message view".

SecondScreen application
SecondScreen is a web-based application that enables SSAS configuration and provides an
overview of current and historical data of a vessel equipped with the BlueTraker® SSAS system.
Map view provides a quick overview of the fleet (vessel's position when their last report message
was sent) with additional tools (voyage replay, map tools, etc.).
BT message view offers an overview of all scheduled and unscheduled messages sent from the
BlueTraker® SSAS terminal onboard the vessel.
SSAS Configurator allows you to define vessel details and message delivery destinations. When
configured, the forwarding of SSAS messages to destinations (e-mail and mobile phone
addresses) is enabled.
BlueTraker commands allow sending special commands to the BlueTraker® SSAS terminal
onboard the vessel, such as Poll (position on demand).
All major web browsers are supported; however, we recommend the latest Mozilla Firefox or
Chrome web browser.

Operation – How to use BlueTraker® SSAS
BlueTraker® SSAS onboard hardware is primarily intended for triggering an alarm (alert buttons),
vessel tracking, and sending other relevant information (diagnostics, malfunction, tamper
detection, etc.).
And when the hardware installation is completed, it is essential to perform the test ("SSAS
test alert") to confirm the successful operation of the BlueTraker® SSAS system.
The test is performed using the ConBox SSAS, where we can switch between "Normal" (also
known as "Production") operation mode and "Test" mode. To switch between operation modes,
please use the selector key, which needs to be placed into the operation mode selector on
ConBox SSAS:
• When the operation mode is set to "Normal" (and the selector key is removed), the
SSAS system is armed and ready.
• "Test" operation mode (along with the selector key that remains inserted into the
operation mode selector) is intended for performing a test after the hardware installation.
The LED indicator should BLUE (LIT) – connected to IRIDIUM satellite network.
stay lit BLUE for a second. BLUE (FLASHING) – IRIDIUM Satellite network not available.
RED (LIT) – normal operation, powered by an electrical
supply of the vessel.
Then LED indicator should
stay lit RED for a second. RED (FLASHING) – initialization sequence in progress, or
terminal is running on internal battery (in case of external
power failure).
Then LED indicator should GREEN (LIT) – GPS fix acquired.
stay lit GREEN for a second. GREEN (FLASHING) – no GPS fix.
And finally, the LED
indicator should not emit
any colour for two seconds.
If none of the colours mentioned above are flashing, but they appear lit, the
BlueTraker® SSAS terminal is working correctly.
"Test" operation mode
The test mode is used to check if the BlueTraker® SSAS system is working properly.
The "SSAS Test Alert" message will contain the same information as the " SSAS Alert" message.
The only difference is the message title "TEST MODE" appears at the beginning of the messages.
When the BlueTraker® SSAS terminal receives the test deactivation command, the
BlueTraker® SSAS terminal will go back to "Normal" operation mode and, on this occasion, will
send an " SSAS Test Alert Deactivation" message to confirm the two-way communication is
successfully completed. The "SSAS Test Alert Deactivation" (confirmation) message will be sent
to all the recipients who previously also received the "SSAS Test Alert" message.
