Preface

This book is an introduction to the practical and applied skills required to complete a project of research,
analysis, or writing.

This book is intended to be an accessible, introductory, step-by-step guide through the project, from
identifying a topic to writing a report or dissertation. It is intended to introduce students to the complete skill
set, including planning, design, analysis, argumentation, criticizing theories, building theories, modeling
theories, choosing methods, gathering data, presenting evidence, and writing the final product.

I was motivated to write this book because of my experiences as an undergraduate student of the social
sciences, with complacent professors who did not teach me these skills. I resorted to taking courses in hard
sciences and management sciences. Since then, I have worked as an interdisciplinary social scientist by
training and profession. I needed to apply these skills as a research policy scientist, advising governments
(from national to local) on current issues and on what do about them. One of my motivations to leave full-
time research behind, in favor of teaching, was to bring these useful skills to students.

The best time to open this book would be when you enter higher education as an undergraduate student.
Most books on research or analysis are written for advanced graduate students or professionals, but in reality
almost everybody, at almost any level, in almost any position, needs to understand the overall process of
research, analysis, and writing. Any education benefits from research, analysis, and writing skills from the
start. A few decades ago, academics started to oppose these skills for perpetuating traditional “power”
structures and repressing creativity and self-discovery, but this fashion went too far. Social scientific skills are
fundamental to verifiable knowledge about societies.

Some books and courses on research concentrate on few skills within the skill set, such as statistical analysis or
writing, but leave the student struggling to fill in the other stages of the process.

This book provides a practical guide that takes the reader through the full spectrum of skills required for the
whole project—from idea to delivery.

This book is likely to be required for:

Courses on research (e.g., praxis, thesis methods, historical methods, qualitative methods, scientific
methods, research skills)
Courses on writing (e.g., “writing across the university”)
Courses on analysis (e.g., environmental analysis, foreign policy analysis)
Preterm and introductory classes at the start of professional degrees (e.g., business intelligence analysis
courses)
Senior theses or capstone projects at the end of programs of instruction

Employers demand these skills. Perhaps you are a professional who has been asked to explain something or to

16
report on an issue. You could be in commercial or official work, tasked with producing regular reports on what
is happening. You might be tasked with analyzing what other people think is happening. You could be the
person who undertakes to decide which of the reports and analyses is most accurate or useful. You may even
consider a full-time career in research.

You will find in this book:

An emphasis on skills, including planning, scoping, analysis, argumentation, theory building, theory
modeling, methods, data gathering, evidence presentation, and writing, and on how to apply these skills
practically
Reviews of the options and alternatives available to you when you approach a particular step in the
process of research
Practical exercises to help you to develop and produce your research
Comparisons between concepts, to help you understand one in relation to the other
Research in the Real World boxes to illustrate the decisions and choices that you will face
Practical Advice boxes to guide you throughout the process, from idea to delivery
End-of-chapter questions and exercises for content review and fact checking
A complete glossary of terms used throughout the book.

The research, analysis, and writing skills in this book are generally accessible, meaning that almost anyone,
after some dedication and application, could acquire them. This book should be useful to anyone who needs
to research, analyze, or write, at any time, in any position, at any level.

Acknowledgments

Helen Salmon at SAGE Publications has opened a portfolio of practical student-focused books of this type,
and has encouraged and guided the development of this book in particular, with my thanks.

This book has benefited from the many students to whom I have taught these skills in the last eight years, and
who have helped me to refine my teaching, on which this book is based.

I want to praise two exceptional employers: Frank Plantan, PhD, who directs the International Relations
Program at the University of Pennsylvania; and Alan Karras, PhD, who directs the International and Area
Studies Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Both have developed rigorous programs focused on
applied knowledge and practical skills, against the many trends and incentives in the opposite direction. I and
my students have benefited from their responsible attitude.

Additionally, I would like to thank the following SAGE reviewers for their feedback and suggestions: Jennifer
P. Anderson, University of Southern Mississippi; Vivian Chin, Mills College; Andrew M. Essig, DeSales
University; Randy Gainey, Old Dominion University; and Sébastien G. Lazardeux, St. John Fisher College.
