23P502 - Process Planning and Cost Estimation
Tutorial 1
1. List the advantages of matrix type organizational structure. (2 marks)
2. Draw the block diagram of various inputs and outputs of a process plan. (2 marks)
3. Draw a quantity vs product variety relationship diagram for different manufacturing. (2
marks)
4. What are the different processing strategies within the manufacturing industry? (2
marks)
5. Define composite part. (2 marks)
6. Define composite part concept in GT. Sketch the various features of composite part
and map with the corresponding manufacturing operations. (5 marks)
7. Apply rank order clustering technique to the part-machine incidence matrix in
the following table to identity the logical part families and machine groups.
Parts are identified by the letters and machines are identified by the numbers.

8. With suitable example discuss the OPITZ parts classification and coding
system. (10 marks)
9. Explain various types of plant layouts used in a manufacturing facility with
neat sketches. Discuss their suitability for different production systems with
real-time examples, such as Toyota's assembly line, Boeing's aircraft
manufacturing, Tata Motors' factory setup, and Amazon's fulfilment centres.
(10 marks)
10. You are the process planner for a small-to-medium sized sub-contracting
manufacturer who specializes in the precision manufacturing of parts for the
aerospace and petrochemical industries. You have been given the adapter
ring drawing (see Figure.1) and asked to develop the process plan. The raw
material is supplied in a Ø160 X 50 mm billet and the general surface finish
has been specified as 10.0 ±1.0 µm. This is processed through a traditional
job-shop environment a wide-range of production equipment but no CNC
capabilities. Assume surface cutting speed, feed, tool material, and depth of
cut appropriately. (10 marks)
