Parts of a Book

Book Cover - is any protective covering used to bind together the pages of a
book.
Title Page – a page at the beginning of a book giving its title, the names of the author and
publisher, and other publication information.

Copyright Page – is a section at the front of a published book that lists its publication,
legal, copyright, and printing details.

Dedication – is a page where authors to bestow a high honor on a person (or small group
of people) they want to praise or otherwise spotlight.
Table of Contents – is usually located within the first few pages of the book after the title
and copyright pages. It outlines the sections contained in the book and the order that they
appear in.
Foreword – is written by someone other than the author and tells the readers why they
should read the book.
Acknowledgements – is where you recognize and thank everyone who helped you with
your book.
Preface – is written by the author and tells readers how and why the book came into being.
Prologue – it is part of the narrative and serves to set up the main story, provides some vital
information, and prepares the reader for what is to come.
Body – this refers to the text of the book, which is usually broken down into
chronologically numbered and named elements called Chapters.
Index – is essentially a roadmap to the book, listing names, places, and things in
alphabetical order and giving the page numbers associated with each topic.
Appendix – is a section located at the back of a book that includes any additional or
supplementary information on the book's topic, such as other books on the subject,
references, citations, etc.
Glossary – sometimes called the idioticon, vocabulary, or clavis, the glossary is essentially a
book's personal dictionary.
Bibliography - is a list of works on a subject or by an author that were used or consulted
to write a research paper, book or article.
