OVERVIEW
This research study, conducted by a team of students at Saint Joseph College of Sindangan, Inc.
(SJCSI), investigates the viability of using Java plum (Syzygium Cumini) leaves as a sustainable
and eco-friendly alternative raw material for paper production. The study aims to address the
environmental concerns associated with traditional papermaking, which relies heavily on wood
pulp, contributing to deforestation and pollution. The researchers explore the potential of Java
plum leaves, a readily available and often underutilized resource, to create high-quality paper
while reducing reliance on timber. The study compares the properties of paper made from Java
plum leaves with traditional paper, focusing on key paper properties such as tensile strength,
surface texture, and surface brightness. The researchers also analyze the cost implications and
eco-friendliness of using Java plum leaves for paper production.
INTRODUCTION
The paper industry is grappling with the challenge of meeting demand while
protecting forests, with traditional production leading to deforestation. A
new approach involves using Java plum leaves instead of cutting down
trees, a common crop grown for their fruit. This study explores the
practicality and benefits of using Java plum leaves for paper production,
aiming to reduce the environmental impact of papermaking. The study
investigates the composition, usefulness, and methods of turning Java plum
leaves into paper sheets, aiming to harmonize innovation with nature's
sustainable practices.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The increasing demand for paper products has led to a decrease
in conventional raw materials like wood pulp, causing environmental
concerns. The Java Plum, also known as Lomboy, is a promising
alternative for sustainable paper production due to its abundant
leaves, which contain cellulose. Traditional papermaking contributes
to global deforestation and environmental pollution. Research into
alternative raw materials, such as agricultural residues, fibers from
non-wood plants, and recycled materials, is being conducted.
However, the daily collection of dry leaves from java plum trees
contributes to air pollution and depletion of the environment (Khoury,
K. 2023).
OBJECTIVE
Aims to investigate the environmental impact of paper production using Java
plum leaves as a raw material.

This seeks to evaluate the durability, cost implications, and other characteristics
of paper made from Java plum leaves, as well as its potential applications in
various industries.

Conducting tests to assess the strength, texture, and overall quality of the
paper made from Java plum leaves. By comparing these properties to those of
traditional wood-based paper, we can determine whether Java plum leaves can
serve as a viable alternative raw material for paper production.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Specifically, this study seeks answers to the following questions:

1. What is the tensile strength of paper made from Java plum leaves
compared to paper made from traditional wood pulp?
2. How does the opacity of paper made from Java plum leaves compare to
that of paper made from traditional wood pulp?
3. What are the cost implications of using Java plum leaves as a raw
material in paper production?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
This study is to explore the potential of using Java Plum (Syzygium Cumini) leaves as a
sustainable and eco-friendly raw material for paper production. The research will
focus on the viabilty of leaves as a renewable resource, the process of extracting
fibers from the leaves, and the quality of paper that can be produced from these
fibers. The study will also investigate the environmental impact of using Java Plum
leaves for paper production and compared to traditional wood-based paper.

The delimitation of this study includes the exclusion of other raw materials for paper
production such as wood pulp or recycled paper. The researcher will only focus on the
viability of Java Plum leaves as a sustainable alternative for paper production.

DATA GATHERING
PROCEDURE AND DATA
ANALYSIS PROCEDURE
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
The investigation of Java plum leaves as a potential material for paper making
involves a meticulous data collection process to guarantee the accuracy and
reliability of the research results. The initial step includes obtaining authorization
and permission from relevant authorities by submitting a detailed request letter
outlining the research objectives and methodology. Once permission is granted,
researchers collect mature and healthy Java plum leaves in Sindangan, Zamboanga
del Norte, ensuring accurate documentation of the collection process. The collected
leaves undergo cleaning and drying before being ground into a fine powder for
paper-making preparation. The necessary materials for paper making, including Java
plum leaf powder, water, and optional additives, are prepared along with essential
equipment such as electric stove, blender, and molds. The experimental phase
involves creating pulp from the leaf powder and water mixture, forming paper sheets
using molds and deckles, pressing the sheets to remove excess water, and drying
them to complete the paper-making process.
DATA ANALYSIS PROCEDURE
This study’s data analysis will employ an analytical, statistical and comparative
approach, which gathers and examines data to identify trends and patterns. By using
numerical analysis, it is a technique for eliminating bias from data evaluation. This
approach will involve assessing the average tensile strength, surface texture, and
surface brightness of each paper type across three independent trials. To interpret
the data effectively, the researchers will make use of the following statistical
treatment. Likert scale, weighted mean, and average luminance, which are in lux and
fc units, are the tools that will be used to interpret the data.
