Chapter 2:

Functions
Transformation Rules
for Function
By Nekru Sothea Ly
W.A.L.T : in this chapter students will learn how to:

❏ Understand the terms function, domain, range, one-one function,

inverse function and composition of function

❏ Identify the range of a given functions in simple cases

❏ Find the composition of two given functions

W.I.L.F : Students are able to :

❏ Determine domain, range, one-one function, inverse function and

composition of function correctly

❏ Demonstrate a clear reasoning with proof about finding range of a

given functions and composition functions
Definition:
A function is a relation that uniquely associates members of one set
with members of another set.

A function can be either a one-one function or a many-one

function.

The function x↦x+2 , where x ∈ R is an example of a

one-one function.
f(x)

0 x
2
The function x↦ x ,
where x ∈R is a
many-one function.

A many-one function has one

output value (y) for each input
value (x) but each output value
can have more than one input
value.
2
If we now consider the graph of y = x :

We can see that the input

value shown has two output
values.

This means that this relation

is not a function.
🌟The set of input values ( X ) for a function is called the domain of the
function.

When defining a function, it is important to also specify its domain.

🌟The set of output values ( Y ) for a function is called the range

(or codomain ) of the function.
