SECTOR HEADLINES FROM 2024

Communication services led the charge.

In 2024, the communication services sector stood out as the top performer among
the S&P 500's 11 sectors, with a 33% gain. Solid performances from major players
like Meta Platforms (META) and Alphabet (GOOGL) were the primary drivers of this
surge—both companies capitalized on the growing demand for digital advertising
and content. Meta's strategic investments in virtual reality and social media engage-
ment really paid off, while Alphabet expanded its cloud services and maintained its
dominance in the search engine market.

Financials experienced a big bounceback.

The financial sector went through a major comeback in 2024, posting a 28.5% gain
compared to 9.9% in 2023. The struggles of major financial institutions, which had
been weighed down by higher interest rates, regulatory challenges and concerns
over a slowing economy, became a thing of the past.

In 2024, a stabilizing economy and the Fed’s strategic policy shifts breathed new life
into the financial sector. Easing rates and the increased likelihood of a soft economic

landing expanded lending activity and renewed investor confidence in bank stocks.
Beyond that, technological innovations (especially in fintech) improved efficiency
and profitability for traditional financial institutions and disruptors. In the investment
banking world, a revival in M&A and IPO activity further contributed to the sector’s
robust performance.

For now, financials remain one of the market’s strongest sectors—but investors will
be watching closely for signals from the Fed and broader economic data to gauge
whether the rally can continue through the rest of the year.

Utilities powered up with AI demand.

Utilities came back in a big way with a 19% gain (compared to 2023’s -10% decline)
as electricity demand surged—a shift largely fueled by the rapid growth of artificial
intelligence data centers, which require massive amounts of power to operate. Com-
panies like Vistra (VST) and Constellation Energy (CEG) enjoyed substantial gains as
they positioned themselves to meet rising demand.

As 2025 unfolds, the outlook for utilities is a mixed bag. On one hand, AI-driven
energy consumption is expected to sustain high demand, but uncertainties around
interest rate cuts and regulatory shifts in renewable energy could pose challenges.
Investors will need to be watching closely to see how utilities balance infrastructure
investments with profitability as they navigate another pivotal year.

Materials faced headwinds among economic concerns.

Materials lost momentum this past year—a 1.6% decline that can be attributed to
easing commodity prices and weakening global demand—compared to its solid 10%
gain the prior year. The sector that had previously benefited from strong infrastruc-
ture spending and supply chain improvements took a tough turn in 2024 thanks to
slowing industrial production and a cooling housing market.

Metals and mining stocks struggled in particular, especially as China's economic

recovery remained sluggish. Chemical producers also felt the pressure from rising
input costs and lower demand.

The rest of this year will be critical for materials—if global manufacturing rebounds
and infrastructure projects get back on track, we could see things turn around. Inves-
tors should keep an eye on commodity price shifts and macroeconomic indicators
that could reignite the demand for raw materials.

Unlock Volatility Insights with ATR

Every successful investor knows you need clear buy and sell rules to protect gains
and minimize losses. One of our core principles at IBD is to cut losses quickly—
typically when a stock falls 7% below the purchase price. This will help you avoid big
losses that are difficult to recover from.

But what about a highly volatile stock that swings 5% to 10% or more in either
direction every day or moves 10% to 20% within its weekly range? This is when
sticking to strict sell rules becomes challenging for many investors. Price swings
like this can shake you out of a potentially powerful move. That’s why knowing a
stock’s Average True Range (ATR) can help you set realistic expectations for price
movement and avoid making impulsive selling decisions.

Whether you're trying to identify a stock's trading behavior or refine your risk
management strategy, ATR is a helpful tool for assessing price movement over time.
ATR can also help you evaluate a stock’s character—in other words, you can get
a sense of the level of volatility typical for that stock. Higher ATR values indicate
increased price swings, which can in turn mean increased risk. Conversely, lower ATR
values suggest more stable price action.

There are two ways to

track ATR in MarketSurge:
1. Add ATR indicators
to your list panel:
Customize your
stock lists with four
different data sets
that all measure
ATR: The standard

%, 30 Day ATR % or
50 Day ATR %. To do
this, click the wrench icon on the right-hand corner of the stock list panel below
the chart. In the dropdown, go to Customize Column Layout and click the “:”
next to Price & Volume to expand the options. Scroll down until you see the
four ATR customizations. Then, click and hold any column headers to drag them

to your preferred location in the Column Layout Preview section. Click Apply
when done or Save As to name and save this specific stock list. Access the list
under the My Lists panel—this populates a list of stocks and their percentage
fluctuations over the selected timeframes.

2. Apply ATR criteria to your

stock screens: You can also
incorporate ATR parameters into
your MarketSurge screens to
filter for stocks within a specific
percentage range. To do this, launch
MarketSurge, then open the Screens,
Alerts & Notes panel to the left of
the chart and click the New Screen
button. Create a name for your screen
and hit Save. Choose Price & Volume from the listed categories, then scroll
down to numbers 38 through 41 to choose from the four criteria listed: Average
True Range (30 Days), 21 Day ATR %, 30 Day ATR % or 50 Day ATR %.

As a general rule, you should stick to companies with an ATR of 5% or less unless
you have a high tolerance for volatility. If you’re a newer trader, you might consider
setting the 21-Day ATR % to a maximum of 3%, while those with more experience
might set a max of 7%.

Pro Tip: As with any trade you make, it’s not enough to only consider one indicator.
Using ATR in conjunction with other fundamental and technical indicators (such as
EPS Rating and RS Rating) will give you a more comprehensive view of a stock’s
potential and risk.
