BOOK REFLECTION

Phạm Hạnh Nguyên - Đinh Quỳnh Phương

Name of book: I am Malala

“I am Malala” by Yousafzai, a very fascinating and insightful book that

everyone who is interested in human incredible spirit should definitely read.
This is a book about a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls’
education, of a father who encouraged his daughter to write and attend school,
and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that
prizes sons. The main character, Malala Yousafzai was born in Pakistan. She
grew up in and around school, which makes Malala valuevalued education from
an extremely young age. Unexpectedly, Pakistan’s power began to continuously
shift after the 9/11 attacks happened. Specifically, when Malala was ten, the
Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist group, came to her hometown and began to
implement many strict rules, especially that girls could not be educated, which
was unacceptable for Malala. Therefore, Malala even wrote a diary about life as
a girl under the Taliban, using a pseudonym so it could not be traced to her. But
then, Malala's family became Internally Displaced Persons, living outside their
hometown for three months before they were able to return when the army
announced that the Taliban had allegedly been driven out. Afterward, Malala
began to gain more national and international fame for being an advocate for
girls' education. Then one day when Malala was on the bus home from school, a
strange man pulled the bus over and shot her in the face. Malala was taken to an
army hospital and given an operation by a pair of British doctors who admire
her bravery and would want to join hands with her in giving education to more
girls and poor children all over the world. In the aftermath of theher shooting,
Malala became an international sensation, using her newfound fame to speak
out on a larger stage for girls' education. After reading this book, we realize the
power of education on a person. Growing up in and around a school, Malala
soon became aware that education has the ability to shape a child's life,
determine their future prospects, and give them the courage to speak up for what
they believe in. In the book, one part that inspires us is when Malala was given
an operation by a couple of British doctors, who came there to save her as they
wanted to join hands in bringing educational opportunities to girls all around the
world. Love and rights still exist in our world, and there are many heroes that do
not wear the mantles of Superman and we are still trying every attempt to bring
about the world. So as the women. We always think that we must have a
superpower to save the world but it is not that complicated. Malala is also a
little girl and she still inspires many people by raising her voice. She never stops
believing in herself and giving up education despite the fact that her life could
be dangerous. Thus, we need to be brave to pursue what we believe is right and
to take responsibility. Therefore, we strongly recommend this book so as to
spread these good values to every reader in every generation, and hope that not
only us but also the next generations would be inspired and together make this
world wonderful to everyone.
