Course Description
Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for
various purposes. (CMO 20 s 2013)

Purposive Communication is a three-unit course that develops student’s communicative


competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal tasks that
provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a multicultural audience
in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for critical evaluation of a variety of texts and
focuses on the power of the language and the impact of images to emphasize the importance of
conveying messages responsibly. The knowledge, skills and insights that students gain from the
course may be used in their other academic endeavors, their chosen disciplines, and their future
careers as they compose and produce relevant oral, written, audio-visual and/or web-based output for
various purposes.

Course Policies Grading System
1. To ensure successful completion of this course, 60% - Class Standing (Quizzes, Assignments, Class
students are expected to arrive for class on time Participation, Projects)
and to remain in class until the end of the class 40% - Major Examinations (Prelim, Mid-term, Pre-

for the course will be noted absent. Seven non- ______
consecutive absences will be subject for drop out 100%
on the course.
2. All students are expected to behave with
academic honesty. It is not academically honest to
misrepresent another person’s work as your own,
to take credit for someone else’s words or ideas,
to obtain advanced information on confidential test
materials, or to act in a way that might harm
another students’ chances for academic success.
These students will automatically have a grade of
5.0 after three (3) offenses of academic
dishonesty.
3. Assignments and requirements should be
submitted on the set deadline.
4. All students are expected to take Major Exams
(Mid-term/Finals) on the specified day. In general,
no make-up test or re-test will be given except
when circumstances warrant but with valid
supporting documents presented.
5. Group activities will be part of the class
participation. Students should participate actively
or get involved in group dynamics and other group
assignments.
6. All students are expected to attend classes in the
prescribed uniform.
Other course policies will be based on the student
handbook.
