the project:
In the evolving era of precision medicine, the capacity to tap into the full potential
of multimodal biomedical data is central to realising precise, personalised clinical
understanding. This study presents a novel deep learning architecture based on
intermediate fusion, a method that integrates heterogeneous streams of data,
including radiological imaging, genomic sequences, and electronic health records,
at a well-chosen mid-layer in the neural network.
Project
This fusion method overcomes the shortfalls of earlier and later fusion methods by
Description:
allowing greater inter-modality interactions while maintaining the semantic
consistency of all data sources. By harnessing the complementary nature of the
different biomedical inputs, our proposed method greatly increases predictability in
high-end clinical use cases, from disease diagnostics to patient-stratification
predictive models. While this work is methodologically novel, it contributes to an
overarching goal of building robust, scalable, and interpretable AIs that enable
data-driven decision-making in today's healthcare systems.

We are living in the golden age of cosmology. We consistently make extremely
accurate measurements of processes that happened over 13 billion years ago, and
have developed the models and tools to make predictions backed by these
observations. In this project, we will explore two epochs of the early universe that
physicists rely on to test their theories of cosmology and particle physics. Students
will be guided through qualitative and quantitative overviews of Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis and the Cosmic Microwave Background, and will gain familiarity
with python and the coding tools used to make predictions for these epochs.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are a novel class of materials that are composed of
random mixtures of five or more pure metallic elements in equiatomic proportions.
They set themselves apart from conventional alloys by possessing exceptional
physical, thermal and mechanical properties owing to their unique
microstructures. Predicting the phases formed in HEAs is crucial for materials
design but remains a complex challenge as first principles methods like density
functional theory tend to be computationally expensive due to the

machine learning to predict phases in HEAs based on alloy composition. A dataset
containing various features, including atomic concentration percentages, atomic
size differences, valence electron concentration and heat of enthalpy amongst
various other thermodynamic properties will used to train and evaluate multiple
machine learning models. The project scope will be adjusted to the grade level of
prospective students.
