Apppositives
An appositive is a noun phrase that restates the noun. An appositive can add
additional information or clarify which noun is intended. Set off an appositive
with commas. In each of the examples below, the appositive is underlined.
EXAMPLES: That dog, the little black one, is very well-behaved.
The car, an old clunker, refused to start this morning.
DIRECTIONS: Underline the appositive in each sentence below.
1. My sister, an avid reader, belongs to a book club.
2. That woman, my neighbor, teaches yoga.
3. This day, Saturday, was made for being outside.
4. My dog, the one that died last year, was such a great companion.
5. The letter, a really long lament, made me cry.
6. Our local organic grocery store, the brick building downtown, is excellent.
7. My father, a carpenter, is very skilled with his hands.
8. That program, My Hero Academia, is an anime.
9. Dinner last night, lasagna, was quite good.
10. This outfit, a pair of overalls, is very comfortable.
11. Harry, the best student in our class, is my friend.
12. The fall leaves, a riot of color, are very vivid this year.
