Basic Forms of Amigurumi
To create a basic conical shape, start with the smallest number possible of
points on the magic ring and add from 1 to 3 increases in each row. How much
the fewer the number of points, the sharper your cone will be. The number of
the points you will increase each round will determine how wide your cone is
stay (width). 1 increase per round results in a narrow cone and 3 increases
result in a wider cone.
Use 3D cones (left) and 2D triangles (right) to make amigurumi pieces with
sharp extremities.
To make a sphere, you will use the same reasoning as the cylinder, however
will make fewer rounds of only single crochets all around between the phases of
increases and decreases. This will cause you to obtain a spherical shape.
perfect.
In some cases, you will need to make an open tube on both sides, for
make a long neck, for example. To do this, you will not be able to
start with the magic ring. Instead, start with a chain
with the number of points you want on the circumference of your tube (larger
number of points, the larger the diameter of the tube). Make a low point on
last point of the chain to form a ring. Then, make several
points along the formed ring, with as many rows as needed
(more lines, greater the length of the tube).
A flat oval shape can be used as the sole of the foot, an oval appliqué, or
like a wide snout. The magic ring produces a circle, so to form
an oval flat shape, start with a chain. Make a single crochet
in the second point of the chain and continue until the end of the row. In the last
chain stitch, make 3 single crochets. Turn 180 degrees and start to
make single crochets on the other side of the base chain. Continue to work
around, making increases at the end of each row and making single crochets
at each point of the chain. You will actually be making 2 halves of
a circle with a rectangle in the middle.
