PARTS OF A BOOK

EXTERNAL ELEMENTS OF A BOOK

1.- Dust jacket, shirt or cover: Any of the three forms is valid for
describe what is known as the cover of a book. This cover can be opaque, or be in
consonance with the cover design (it is the most common)

2.- Flap: It is the extension of the shirt or cover, which folds inward and
about which the published works are printed, photo, short biography of the author, etc.

3.- Cover: It is the most visible and curious part of a book. More commonly known as
Cover, this element of the book will play a fundamental role in behavior
of the reader's purchase.

4.- The Spine: The spine is the part we see when we place a book on its side. For ...

5.- Eyebrow: This is one of the least known external parts of a book. It is the
opposite to the spine, that is to see it, we will have to place the book with the cover facing up

towards us.

6.- Guards or Courtesy Pages: This part, although physically located in the
interior of the book, does not form part of the plot so it is often considered an element
external to the book. It refers to the first two and the last two pages of a book. In books

INTERNAL ELEMENTS OF A BOOK

1.- Front cover: It is the page that precedes the cover, and on which only the
title of the work
2.- Cover: It is the page that includes the full title of the book, the name
complete of the author or authors, the place and year of printing, the publisher (and in the
majority of cases your brand), and the collection.

3.- Dedication: It is usually a small text that the author includes at the beginning of their work.

4.- Presentation and acknowledgments: This is the part that the author dedicates to giving the

thanks to all the people who have made the creation and publication of it possible
work. Editors, publishing houses, family, friends, professionals in the sector, ultimately to
all those who collaborated in its research and publication.

5.- Preface or introduction: written by a person who understands the subject of the book
a general way, an editor, a teacher, a specialist.

6.- Index: The index is usually a very useful part for the reader as it reflects the
structure and organization of the book's content, showing the chapter titles
main.

7.- Body of the work: it is the main text of a book or brochure.

8.- Appendix or annexes: Include information that helps to interpret part of the
content of the book, or more technical and less essential aspects of the book, such as

supplementary information.

9.- Bibliography: The book cites a set of other books that the writer used as a basis.

10.- Colophon: Annotation generally on the last page, where the details are provided.
