MOVEMENT IN ANIMALS
1. Differentiate between locomotion and movement.
Ans: -
Locomotion Movement
Locomotion is the movement of an organism When an organism remains in the same
from one place to another. place, and only part of the body moves, then
Ex :- walking, running. it is known as movement.
Ex: - waving a hand.
2. Kiran observes an earthworm moving on soil in a garden. He gently lifts it
and places it on a piece of blotting or filter paper. Observes its movement.
Then again, he places it on a smooth glass plate or any slippery surface.
Observes its movement. In which of the above two surfaces did he find that
the earthworm is able to move easily?
Ans: Earthworm’s movement on paper will be smoother and easier as compared to
movement on a glass plate. Earthworms move by using tiny bristles called setae on their
bodies to grip onto surfaces. On a rough surface like blotting or filter paper, the setae can
easily catch and hold, allowing the worm to move relatively freely. However, on a smooth
glass surface, the setae have much less grip, making it difficult for the worm to move.
3. Does the shell of snail help in its movement? What is its purpose?
Ans: - The shell does not help in the movement, but it is dragged along by the snail. Snail
hides inside the shell to protect itself from the heat and enemies.
4. How does a cockroach move?
Ans: A cockroach has three pairs of legs which help it to walk, Run and climb. Strong claws
at the tips of its legs help it to grip the surface firmly while climbing. Two pairs of wings that
are attached to the body muscles help the cockroach fly short distances. It does not have
bones. It has a stiff hard outer body covering made-up of chitin. This covering is also called
exoskeleton, and it consists of many plates joined together, allowing body movements. A
cockroach walks by moving Three of its legs at a time.
5. Name and explain the movement shown by snakes.
Ans:- Body movement shown by snakes are known as slithering. Snakes move in a wave
like manner. This motion pushes the body forward by pressing against the ground.
6. Observe the picture. There are two snakes of the same size slithering on
sand. Can you identify which of them would move faster and why?
Ans:- Snake “A” will move faster than snake “B”. Since a snake form loops in its body while
slithering. Each loop of the snake gives it a forward push by pressing against the ground.
Hence, the snake with a larger number of loops moves much faster than the snake with a
lesser number of loops.
7. Explain the role of the swim bladder in fish movement?
Ans:- It is a saclike structure, which helps them to stay afloat or sink in water. When the
bladder is full of air, the fish becomes lighter and can rise. When the fish needs to go down, it
releases some of the air from the swim bladder.
8. Riya visited a bird sanctuary and observed several birds in flight. Curious,
she asked her teacher why birds are so well-equipped for flying. Explain the
features in birds that make them well-suited for flight.
Ans:- i) Bones are hollow and light.
(ii) The shape of the body is streamlined, which helps to move easily in air.
(iii) Bones of hind limbs are specialized for walking, hopping and perching.
(iv) Bones of forelimbs are modified into wings for flight.
(v) Breastbones hold flight muscles and are used to moving the wings up and down.
(vi) Shoulder bones are strong
9. While visiting an aquarium and a nearby park, Sameer observed birds flying
gracefully in the sky and fishes swimming swiftly in the water. He noticed both
animals had bodies shaped in a way that seemed to help them move easily in their
environments. Explain the body feature of birds and fishes help them move
efficiently in air and water, respectively.
Ans: - The fish and bird have streamlined shape of body. The body is broad in the middle and
narrow at the two ends, just like a boat. It helps the fish to cut through the water currents
easily and for birds it helps to fly against the direction of the wind.
