ACTIVITY - 2
Math Lab Activity: Testing One-to-One Functions Using the
Horizontal Line Test
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this activity, students will be able to:
Understand the definition of a one-to-one function.
Apply the Horizontal Line Test to determine if a function is one-to-
one.
Analyze different types of graphs to identify one-to-one and non-
one-to-one functions.
Develop visual reasoning and critical thinking skills in function
analysis.
Materials Required:
Ruler
Worksheet with pre-drawn graphs
Pencil and eraser
Method / Procedure:
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
1. A function is one-to-one if each output (y-value) corresponds to
exactly one input (x-value).
The Horizontal Line Test:
o If any horizontal line intersects the graph more than once,
the function
o is not one-to-one. HENCE THE FUNCTION IS MANY TO
ONE
o If every horizontal line intersects the graph at most once, the
function is one-to-one.
2. Analyse the graphs of various functions .
3. Draw horizontal lines across the graphs and observe the number of
intersection points.
4. Record the observations in a table.
Observation Table:
Equation

No. Type (FUNCTIO More Than Once? One?
N)
1 Linear y=2 x +3 NO YES
2 Quadratic y = x2 YES NO

5 Exponential y=2 NO YES
6 Sine y=sinx YES NO
7 Logarithmic y=logx NO YES
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this activity, students will be able to:
Visually determine whether a function is one-to-one using the
horizontal line test.
Understand the importance of one-to-one functions in inverse
function analysis.
Identify and classify functions based on their graphical behavior.
Apply mathematical reasoning to real-world and theoretical
problems.
