What are Nutrients?
• The essential substances in our food that
our body needs for growth, development,
and proper functioning are called nutrients
• Nutrients help us stay healthy and strong.
Activity 1
Test for Starch
Procedure:
• Take a small quantity of food item.
• Add few drop of dilute iodine solution
Observation:
• A blue- black colour indicates the presence of
starch.
Activity 2
Test for Protein
Procedure:
• Take a small quantity of food item.
• Add 2 drops of copper sulphate solution and 10
drops of caustic soda solution.
Observation:
• A violet color indicates the presence of protein.
Activity 3
Test for Fat
Procedure:
• Take a small quantity of food item.
• Wrap it in a piece of paper and crush it.
Observation:
• An oily patch on the paper indicates the presence
of fats

Carbohydrates
• Carbohydrates are the main
source of energy for our body.
• Food containing fat and
carbohydrate are also called
“energy giving food”.

Fats
• Fats also give us energy. They
give us more energy than
carbohydrates.
• Fats also help our body absorb
some vitamins.

Proteins
• Proteins are needed for growth
and repair of body.
• Food proteins are also called
“body building foods”.

Vitamins
• Vitamin helps in protecting our
body against disease
• Vitamins also helps in keeping
our eyes, bones , teeth and gums
healthy.

Different Types of Vitamins
• Vitamin A keeps our skin and
eyes healthy.
• Vitamin B is for energy release
and nerve function.
• Vitamin C helps body to fight
against many disease.
• Vitamin D helps our body to use
calcium for bones and teeth

• Minerals are also needed by our
body in small amounts for
proper functioning.
• They help in the formation of
bones, teeth, and blood.
