Format: Your assignment must be handwritten and uploaded as a document to Canvas. You should
also upload the completed front cover.
Timing: This is not a timed assignment. We estimate that this assignment may take you between 60
and 90 minutes. Spend 15–30 minutes of this planning your assignment. However, if you need to
take longer, then please do so.
Resources: In order to complete this assignment, you will need Ignite 1. The page you need to refer
to is page 84.
Preparation: Before you begin this assignment, please ensure that you have completed Topics 1–5 in
Module 3. There is also a planning sheet you can use (Worksheet 3.5). There is also a guidance sheet
with some examples which you should read before attempting Assignment 3.
YOUR TASK
Write the opening of a Science Fiction novel.
Try to write between 500-700 words.

• Add detail to your writing by describing what you hear, see and how you feel to appeal to
the senses of your reader.
• Create an appropriate atmosphere through your descriptions – such as describe the setting
or the physical appearance of the characters.
• Re-read your work to check your grammar, punctuation and spelling.
• Use all of the notes from the tasks and the exercises that you have completed to help you
complete this writing task.
