COURSE CONTENT
BME 212 Electrical Machines
Objectives:
To present a problem oriented introductory knowledge of Electrical Machines.
To focus on the study of electro mechanical energy conversion & different parts of electrical
machine.
To address the underlying concepts & methods behind Electrical Engineering machines.
To identify & formulate solutions to problems relevant to Electrical Machines and find the
efficiency of machine.
1. DC Machines:
1.1 EMF generated in the armature. Methods of Excitation, Armature reaction & its effect
in the performance, Methods of decreasing the effects of Armature reaction, Effect of
Brush shift. Commutation process.
1.2 Operating Characteristics of DC Generators: Separately Excited generators, Shunt
Generators, Series Generators and Compound Generators.
1.3 Torque equation of D.C motor, Operating Characteristics of Shunt, Series &
Compound motors.
1.4 Losses and efficiency of DC machines, Hopkinson’s and Swinburne’s test.
1.5 D.C Machine application: Generator application, Motor application
2. 3-Phase Induction machine:
2.1 Induction motor as a Transformer, Flux and MMF phasors in Induction motors,
2.2 Equivalent circuit, Performance equations, Induction motor phasor diagram
2.3 Toque-slip characteristic, Power slip characteristic.
2.4 Speed control of Induction motor.
2.5 Polarity Test, Application of Polyphase Induction motor.
3. Synchronous Machines:
3.1 Construction, Types, Excitation system, Generator & motor modes.
3.2 Armature reaction, Theory of salient pole machine, Two reaction theory, Voltage
regulation.
3.3 Parallel operation of alternators, Synchronous machine connected to infinite bus,
effect of change of excitation and speed of prime mover.
3.4 Starting of Synchronous motor, V-Curve, Damper winding, Hunting.
4. Fractional Kilowatt motors:
4.1 Single phase Induction motor: Construction, Double revolving field theory. Starting
methods, Speed -torque characteristics, Phasor diagram, Application.
4.2 Principle of operation of AC servo motors, Stepper motors, Techo generators, Brush
less DC motors.
