ENGLISH GRAMMAR PRESENTATION ON

VOICES :

THE VOICE OF VERB EXPRESSES WHETHER THE SUBJECT IN THE
SENTENCE HAS PERFORMED OR RECEIVED THE ACTION

• There are two of voices:


• Active voice :subject is doer of action
• Passive voice: subject is receiver of action
TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS :

• Transitive verb : need object to express full meaning.


• Example: Bhumika sent me a letter.
• Intransitive verb : No need of object to express full meaning.
• Example:Birds fly.
RULES TO CHANGE SENTENCES FROM
ACTIVE TO PASSIVE VOICE:
• Divide the sentence into subject , verb , object.
• The places of subject and object are interchanged.
• Use V3 form of verb as the main verb in sentence.
• Change in pronoun.
• Change in tenses.
• Use of by.
Change in Past Present Future
tenses :

Simple Was /were + by Am/is/are + by Will + be + by

Continuous Was/were + being +by Am/is/are + being+ by

Perfect Had + been+ by Has + been+ by Will + been + by


Change in pronouns :

ASSERTIVE SENTENCES :

☆She has required the car. (pr.p) –The car has been repaired by her.
☆Himani loves coffee .([Link])–Coffee is loved by Himani.
☆Pruthvi is writing a letter.(pr.c)–A letter is being written by Pruthvi.
☆Jivith has played basketball with Ayush.(pr.p)–Ayush has been played
basketball with Jivith.
☆Madan speaks English fluently. ([Link])English is spoken fluently by Madan.
INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES :

Wh questions:
• What does he want? What is wanted by him?
• When did you write the letter? When was the letter Witten by you?
• Where did Gowtham find the bag? Where was Gowtham’s bag found?
• Who can do the work? By whom can the work be done?
• Which pen has Sridhar lost? Which pen has been lost by Sridhar?
INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES :

Negative :
• Is he not playing football? Is not football being played by him?
• Did I not give Kushal a pen? Was not a pen given to Kushal by me?
• Had Srivatsa not done the work? Had not the work been done by
Srivatsa?
• Will you not eat rice? Will not the rice be eaten by you?
IMPERATIVE SENTENCES:
• If these sentences contain objects;
• Let + Object + be + V3
• Do it - Let it be done.
• Let me do my duty – Let my duty be done.
• Do not spoil the food. – Let the food not be spoiled.
• Let me tell the truth to Sunayana. – Let the truth be told by me to Sunayana.
• Let Sanvi sing a song. – Let a song be sung by Sanvi.
IMPERATIVE SENTENCES :

If these sentences do not contain object


• Keep your promise. – Your promise should be kept.
• Enter by this gate. –You are ordered to enter by this gate.
• Cease fire , the army officers. – Army officers are ordered to cease fire.
• Never disobey your superiors. – You Are advised to never disobey .
EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES :

• Alas! I have lost my books.


• Alas! My books have been lost.
• Hurrah! I found my pen.
• Hurrah! My pen was found.
OPTATIVE SENTENCES :
• May + object + be +V3 + subject
• May God grant Surya a long life.
• May Surya be granted a long life by God.
• May God bless Bhuvan
• May Bhuvan be blessed by God.
• May Amrutha accept my request.
• May my request be accepted by Amrutha.
MODAL AUXILIARIES :
Object + modal + be + V3 + by + Subject.
●Varsha can do this sum.
This sum can be done by Varsha.
●Lasya should respect Daniya.
Daniya should be respected by Lasya.
●Karan might take the book.
The book might be taken by Karan.
TO-INFINITIVES :

• Raksha has to scold Teeksha.


• Teeksha has to be scolded by Raksha.
• I have to make a plan.
• A plan has to be made by me.
• Gagan has much money to spend.
• There is much money to be spent by Gagan.
TWO TRANSITIVE VERBS :
• Divakar gave Dishanth a book.
• A book was given to Dishanth by Divakar.
• Anandini teaches us Sanskrit.
• Sanskrit is taught to us by Anandini.
• Janvi taught Nayana cooking.
• Cooking was taught to Nayana by Janvi.
PREPOSITIONS :

• Jashwanth laughed at the old man.


• The old man was laughed at by Jashwanth.
• Ganhavi listen to music.
• Music is listened to by Ganhavi.
• Avik looked for Samarth.
• Samarth was looked for by Avik.
QUASI-PASSIVE VOICE:

• Honey tastes sweet.


• Honey tastes sweet when it is tasted.
• The milk smells sour.
• The milk smells sour when it is smelt.
• The books are printing.
• The books are being printed.
