General Instructions
(1) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and
Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning based of
1mark each, Section B contains five questions of two marks each, Section C contains
seven questions of three marks each, Section D contains two case study based questions of
four marks each and Section E contains three long answer questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question
in Section B, one question in Section C, one question in each CBQ in Section D and all
three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such
questions.
(6) Use of calculators is not allowed.

Read the following paragraph and answer the questions.
System of units: A system of units is a collection of units in which certain units are
chosen as fundamental and all others are derived from them. This system is also called
an absolute system of units. Some common systems in use are: c.g.s system: The unit of
length is centimeter, mass is gram, time is second. m.k.s system: The unit of length is
meter, mass is kilogram, time is second. f.p.s system: The unit of length is foot, mass is
pound, time is second. S.I. system: In 1960, 11th General Conference of Weights and

Read the following paragraph and answer the questions
When an object is placed on a surface and force applied it is at rest then a self adjusting
force comes into play between body and surface is called force of static friction. When
the body just starts its movement the force is called the force of limiting friction. The
force of limiting friction is independent of surface area. When the body is in motion it is
called the force of kinetic friction.

of the car with suitable diagram for
(i) The motion of the car without taking into account the force of friction between the

(a) State newton's second law of motion. Derive a mathematical formula to calculate
force if mass remains constant. Prove that second law contains first law.
(b) A mass of 6 kg is suspended by a rope of length 2 m from the ceiling. A force of 50
N in the horizontal direction is applied at the midpoint P of the rope, as shown. What is
the angle the rope makes with the vertical in equilibrium ? (Take g = 10 m s-2). Neglect
the mass of the rope.
33. (A) Sumit was driving his car at 45m/s. He looks ahead and observes an accident that
results in a pileup in the middle of the road. By the time Sumit applied the brakes, he
was 50m from the pileup. He slows down at a rate of 10.0 m/s2.
(a). Plot a velocity-time plot for Sumit‟s motion.
(b). Use the plot to determine the distance that Sumit would travel prior to reaching a
complete stop (if he did not collide with the pileup).
(c). Use kinematic equations to determine the distance that Sumit would travel prior to
reaching a complete stop (if he did not collide with the pileup).
(d). Will Sumit hit the cars in the pileup?
