ACT 1
SCENE 1
EDDIE: (standing on the row; not looking at anyone) This is not nice …
ARCHIE: (on the left; not looking at EDDIE) Shhh!
EDDIE: But you can’t copy me … and don’t shush me.
He stops tapping. ARCHIE also stops tapping. Silence as EDDIE looks
at ARCHIE taps. He sighs, ARCHIE sighs. EDDIE is fuming with anger.
He scratches his head; ARCHIE does the same.
EDDIE: What? What?
ARCHIE: (laughing) Why are you so nervous?
EDDIE: What? I’m not nervous. Why you think I’m nervous? I’m … anxious.
ARCHIE: (laughing) There you go again, trying to be clever.
EDDIE: I’m not clever, I’m intelligent … being clever is low-class. (SHAKES
laughs) Hei wena! What are you laughing at?
ARCHIE: Stop watching so much TV. You think that’s intelligence?
EDDIE: Listen to what you saying … do you think you making sense? Shakes,
can you hear this fool? Tell him who the intelligent one is between me
and him.
ARCHIE: Don’t listen to this coward, Shakes. Tell him he’s trying to be clever.
EDDIE: (looking into the corner of SHAKES’s left eye) Shakes! Tell him!
ARCHIE: (looking into the corner of SHAKES’s left eye) Shakes!
EDDIE: (barks into SHAKES’s ear) Shakes!
ARCHIE: shouting into SHAKES’s ear) Shakes!

1
SHAKES slowly closes his ear in a very confused state as they scream
at him. DAPHNE, 16 years old, comes out of the class; she’s holding a
school bag. She roughly pushes the second black box at stage right as
if opening the door of the classroom. She roughly closes it and sits on
one of the boxes at centre stage. She opens one of her books and
starts reading with a frown.
SHAKES: I am very afraid.
BOTH: Of what?
SHAKES: (pointing at DAPHNE) Of her.
EDDIE: Good. It’s about time she came out. Now, Shakes, go to her and do
exactly what we told you. Go!
They laugh. SHAKES walks to her. He stops halfway, then walks back
to EDDIE and ARCHIE.
EDDIE: What? What?
SHAKES: (shouting) I forgot.
ARCHIE: Shhh! (whispering) why are you shouting?
SHAKES: (shouting) What? I can’t hear you.
EDDIE: (pulling him to the corner) Unblock your ears … unblock your ears.
(SHAKES does so with his finger. EDDIE whispers) Can you hear me?
(SHAKES nods) Don’t come with monkey tricks here. What Grade are
you in?
SHAKES: Grade 8.
ARCHIE: You are in Grade 8 but you can’t listen.
EDDIE: (whispering) Pay attention. You will give her that lunch box, tell her you
love her … then you will apologise for stealing it and for also taking a
bite out of her chicken and mayo sandwiches. Is there anything difficult
you didn’t understand?
SAHAKES: No. I just forgot it was a chicken and mayo sandwich.
EDDIE: (whispering) Now go! No monkey tricks, we’ll be listening, suburban
boy.
They laugh. SHAKES hesitantly walks towards her. She looks up and
sees SHAKES, who quickly turns and walks back to EDDIE and
ARCHIE. They pull him into the corner.
EDDIE: You are wasting my time. I wanna go eat my lunch.
SHAKES: But I didn’t steal her lunch box and I don’t love her.

2
EDDIE: (angry) What did you say? (to ARCHIE) Give me that knife. (acting like
a movie star) Archie, give me the knife, so I can teach this boy how to
talk to me.
ARCHIE: Eddie! Take it easy. He’s only a boy.
EDDIE: (still acting like a movie star) Give me the knife, man. (he grabs
SHAKES by his shirt collar) I’m not gonna let a boy disrespect me like
this … a Grade 8 cheese-boy.
ARCHIE: Shakes. I don’t want your blood to spill on to me. There’s nothing I can
do. (he puts his hand in his back pocket)
SHAKES: Okay! I’m going … I’m going … Please don’t kill me.
EDDIE: (he let go of SHAKES; in a low whisper) Go, before I change my mind.
SHAKES quickly walks to her. They laugh as he goes.
ARCHIE: I told you to stop watching too much TV.
EDDIE: It helps when you run out of ideas. Now shut up, let’s watch Shakes.
DAPHNE is busy reading SHAKES is standing next to her. EDDIE and
ARCHIE are watching from the corner, giggling. DAPHNE slowly raises
her head and looks at SHAKES.
DAPHNE: And then?
SHAKES produces her lunch box; he’s been hiding it behide his back.
EDDIE: (from the corner) What is she saying?
DAPHNE and SHAKES are talking; their conversation is muted.
ARCHIE: I don’t know.
SHAKES gives her the lunch box. ARCHIE describes what is
happening between DAPHNE and SHAKES.
ARCHIE: Look, Daphne’s standing up. She’s got her hands on her hips. I think
she’s furious. She’s shouting at him. (ARCHIE and EDDIE burst out
laughing) Look … she’s grabbing her lunchbox from Shakes.
EDDIE: I can see, dammit. Do you think I’m blind?
ARCHIE: What did I do now? Can we just enjoy our power for once? I thought
you also wanted to see these suburban rich kids suffer.
EDDIE: Okay! But you must also grow up. I’m not stupid … let me enjoy my
power in peace.
ARCHIE: Your power?
EDDIE: Yes! My power. You are my sidekick.
ARCHIOE: “My power”. You are my sidekick.

3
DAPHNE: (shouting at SHAKES) You are just like these township boys. (opening
her lunch box and taking out a sandwich with a bite taken out of it)
What the hell did you eat my sandwich for?
SHAKES: I’m sorry. I was hungry. Please don’t repot me to the principal.
DAPHNE: You are sorry? Here, eat them all. God knows what you put in here.
(She hits him with the sandwich and then smears it on his face) Get out
of my sight. You are not a nice person.
SHAKES: I am a nice person.
She removes the first black box at stage right, and then drags it
downstage right; she sits on it with her back to the audience.
EDDIE: (as they come out from the corner; laughing) Shakes! Shakes!
They laugh at him uncontrollably. His face is covered with mayonnaise.
He’s looking down, feeling embarrassed.
ARCHIE: Shakes! Look at me. (SHAKES hesitantly looks at him. They burst out
laughing again) Keep looking at me.
SHAKES tries to save himself from a lot of embarrassment; he starts
smiling. His smile gradually develops into laughter: they are laughing.
SHAKES is laughing lauder than they are. EDDIE and ARCHIE stop
laughing, puzzled by SHAKES’s laughter. They look at each other.
ARCHIE: (to SHAKES) What are you laughing at?
SHAKES: (still laughing) It’s fanny.
ARCHIE: Hey! Stop laughing. You are not allowed to laugh.
SHAKES: (abruptly stops laughing) Okay!
ARCHIE: So what’s funny?
SHAKES: Ha! What? (they look at him without expressions) Er … oh! Daphne …
EDDIE: What did she say?
SHAKES: She does this to me (pointing at his face) because … I said … I told her
I love her. But then again … she says to me … I’m not her type, her
type is … (points at EDDIE)
EDDIE: Me?
SHAKES: Yah! She said she like you … she said you are cute and intelligent in
class.
EDDIE: Me?
SHAKES: Yah! And then I told her I can hook her up with you because you are
my friend.

4
ARCHIE: Him?
SHAKES: Yah! And then she said I don’t have to do that because all I have to do
is to tell you to go and pick up … her bicycle and then she’ll be your
girlfriend.
EDDIE: Where?
AECHIE: (to EDDIE) What?
SHAKES: She said … she said two blocks away from the school. I know the
house. Ten minutes’ walk from here.
ARCHIE: But I have never seen Daphne riding a bicycle to school before.
SHAKES: It’s new. So … so … I don’t mean to disrespect, but you guys take a
train from the townships to get here, and she stays around here but
very far from the school. So they bought her a bicycle … her parents …
so she left it at one of her friends’ house.
EDDIE: Which friend?
SHAKES: Er … Angelique, Angelique in Grade 10. So Angelique doesn’t want to
go and bring the bicycle because Daphne said she can’t go that way
(pointing upstage) after school … she needs to go that way (pointing
downstage, to the audience) because she needs to rush somewhere …
and now the bicycle is that way (pointing upstage), which is where you
need to go to get it, right now before lunch break ends.
EDDIE: Don’t lie to me.
SHAKES: I’m not lying … If I’m lying, I’ll bring you lunch every day, for these two
weeks of our exams. Besides, I saw the bicycle on my way to school.
ARCHIE: EDDIE, I don’t believe this this boy.
EDDIE: It doesn’t matter what you believe. Come.
ARCHIE: Why am I going with you? She loves you, not me.
EDDIE: I won’t give you my supper tonight when you’re not feeling full yet. You
know MaOulady is cooking chicken intestine tonight.
ARCHIE: Eish! (rubbing his stomach) Chicken intestine. I wish I was the only
child at home.
EDDIE: Come. I was born first.
SHAKES: (checking his watch) We have only thirty minutes before lunch break
ends.
ARCHIE: So?
SHAKES: First exam today.

5
They start running and chanting the name of the streets and places
they pass. In this sequence they push the black boxes around, creating
streets. The black boxes eventually become houses. The boy who was
just reading becomes a different DOG each time they come to a new
street. He barks at them.
ALL: (chanting) The gate – school gate …
They push the first three black boxes from stage right to upstage.
EDDIE moves upstage right, SHAKES upstage centre, and ARCHIE
upstage left simultaneously. They each mime running behind the black
boxes upstage. Each ends up at his own box.
EDDIE: You better not be lying, SHAKES. Where to, Shakes?
SHAKES: Turn on Pretorius Street.
A DOG barking at them.
ALL: (chanting, in a line as they run to the other three black boxes)
Pretorius! Pretorius! Pretorius! Twenty minutes left to exam.
They push the other three black boxes to centre stage. Then EDDIE
pushes his to downstage centre, ARCHIE to centre stage, and
SHAKES between them. They mime the running again, facing stage
right. From the audience point of view the black boxes make a t-shape.
The DOGS stop barking.
ALL: Jump river. (they jump the black boxes and face stage left, and then all
squat)
SHAKES: Shhh! (pointing at the black box at centre stage left. It’s a box they
haven’t moved. There is a miniature bicycle leaning against it. He
whispers) There is the house … Angelique’s house … and ther’s the
bicycle.
ARCHIE: Why are you whispering?
SHAKES: (clears throat) No, nothing … something … in my throat. But I’m cool.
EDDIE: It’s a nice bicycle. It’s new.
SHAKES: Fifteen minutes.
EDDIE: Come, let’s go.
SHAKES: Eish! Iyoo! (putting on an act) My bladder is exploding … I have to pee.
(he rushes to stage right and creates a fake sounds of urine) Daphne
said there’s no one there. There’s no time.
EDDIE and ARCHIE: jump fence (they jump the black boxes)
ARCHIE: Why am I jumping?
EDDIE: Come … Sidekick!

6
SHAKES: (from stage right, to himself) These two clowns are mad.
He picks up a stone and throws it on top of the house (the black box
that is Angelique’s house). He then runs away the way they came,
returning the boxes he moved to the positions they were in, chanting
the names as they did on the way there, but this time it’s quicker and
more animated. He does this throughout his running back to school.
EDDIE’s and ARCHIE’s movements are minimal. SHAKES gets to
school and stops in front of DAPHNE, panting heavily. The boy who
was playing the street dogs now becomes a big DOG at Angelique’s
house, but EDDIE and ARCHIE don’t hear him. They take the bicycle.
As they are about to jump the fence, the boy appears as a huge DOG
and barks at them. They scream and run for the fence.
BOTH: Jump fence!
They both run back the way they came, with the miniature bicycle. The
further they go, the more the huge DOG’s barking fades away. In this
sequence they return the black boxes to the positions they were in
before. Their animation-run turns into slow motion when they get to the
school gate.
SHAKES: (at school, to DAPHNE) Please, you gotta listen to me. I was bullied.
DAPHNE: You’re wasting my time, I have exams to write. (she stands and pushes
SHAKES out of her way)
SHAKES: I’m a nice person, listen to me. It was Eddie and Archie who stole your
lunch box, not me.
DAPHNE: Talk to the hand.
SHAKES: Okay! I’ll talk to your hand. Eddie and Archie went to steal Angelique’s
new bicycle and I overhead them saying they’re gonna give it to you
because Eddie … Eddie said you’re his girlfriend. But they only want to
get you into trouble. If you take the bicycle they’ll go and report you to
the principal so you won’t write your exams … They say they want to
get all the kids who live in the suburbs into trouble because … they say
we think we are special. It’s true. They said if I tell you they will kill me.
They have knives. I’m only telling you this because I am a nice person.
I am an “A” student. Don’t tell them I told you.
DAPHNE: Listen, I don’t care whether you are nice, an “A” student or whatever. I
don’t have time to mingle with Grade 8s. I have to go and write my
exams because I want to do my Matric next year and I don’t want
anything to disturb me. You’ve done enough already. (beat) If you are
lying to me, I will go and report you to the principal for stealing my
lunch and for wasting my time and you won’t write your exams. If you
are telling the truth, then I will report them. I’m too old for your bicycle
jokes.

7
SHAKES: Okay! Thanks for listening.
EDDIE and ARCHIE appears from the corner, panting. SHAKES runs
away to class and opens the black box as a door and then closes it
before EDDIE and ARCHIE see him. He lies, hiding, behind the black
boxes. The audience can’t see him. EDDIE and ARCHIE see
DAPHNE. She smiles at them. They walk over to her with the miniature
bicycle, both enchanted by her beauty. EDDIE is hiding the bicycle
behind his back also smaling.
EDDIE: Hi!
DAPHNE: (sarcastically) Hi! Eddie … Archie.
ARCHIE: Hello! (an awkward silence creeps in as DAPHNE taps her right foot,
folding her arms. ARCHIE nudges EDDIE) Eddie!
EDDIE: O-ho! Eish … sorry. (he takes out the bicycle) I love you, too …
DAPHNE: (pause) Nxa! Sis! (she walks away from them)
EDDIE: Daphne, wait! (he runs to her, then grabs her hands)
DAPHNE: (pulling her hand away from EDDIE) Hey! Hey! Hey! Don’t you dare
ever touch me again. I am not your friend, I am not your girlfriend …
and I will never be. I hate you like Batman hates all the villains in his
movies, and I would kick you right now if I was a boy, but I’m going to
report you for stealing Angelique’s new bicycle. You two fools don’t
scare me. I’m not Shakes.
EDDIE: What? (ARCHIE is giggling) Shut up, wena.
DAPHNE: Leave me alone, (walking away, she climbs on to the black boxes and
walks on them from stage right to stage left)
EDDIE: Eish! Look, she’s going to the principal’s office.
DAPHNE is miming walking, looking upwards. Sheturns corners as if
she is walking up flights of stairs.
ARCHIE: I told you that boy was lying, but you were so in love with a ghost you
couldn’t hear me. (mimicking AI Pacino) What were my words to you?
EDDIE: You watch too much TV. We’ve got to find that boy before the principal
gets to us, we must pin everything on Shakes. Otherwise …
ARCHIE: Now you are thinking like a firstborn. (laughs, parodying EDDIE)
“Come, I was born first,” (burst into laughter)
EDDIE: Archie. Do you have any idea what’s happening here? If she reports
us, we won’t write our exam, which means we won’t go to Matric next
year. And if MaOulady finds out, she’ll say …

8
ARCHIE: (mimicking his mother) I put you two in a good school in the suburbs so
you can get a good education and learn good English. But what do you
do? You go and disappoint me. Do you have any idea that the reason I
became a clerk at the hospital was just to make sure you go to school
and become somebodies in the society? And when you finish your
degrees at the universities, I’ll quit this government job because I don’t
like it. Seventeen years working for you. Stop this nonsense and go to
school.” (back to himself) Yah! I know that. It’s nothing new.
EDDIE: Do you want to repeat Grade 11?
ARCHIE: No.
EDDIE: Then let’s find that boy.
They go to the audience to ask “Did you see Shakes?” They ask a
couple of people in different parts of the audience. Onstage DAPHNE
arrives at the PRINCIPAL’s office; she gets off the black box. The
PRINCIPAL is the boy who was the huge dog. DAPHNE’s conversation
with the PRINCIPAL is animated but muted. By looks of things, the
PRINCIPAL is furious. These two scenes are happening at the same
time, but we can’t hear EDDIE and ARCHIE.
PRINCIPAL: I will not tolerate such behaviour in my school. Last week it was thieves
… I did nothing. Now this? Come with me. The PRINCIPAL and
DAPHNE are now walking down to the ground level. EDDIE and
ARCHIE leave the audience and decide to look in the classrooms.
They open each black box like a door from stage left to stage right,
they find SHAKES and close the box that is the door. SHAKES
screams.
ARCHIE: Shut up!
The PRINCIPAL and DAPHNE hear the screaming as they pass the
third door (box). ARCHIE takes out a knife and puts it to SHAKES’s
throat as he hears the PRINCIPAL’s footsteps. His footsteps sound like
a giant ‘s footsteps. DAPHNE and the PRINCIPAL walk back and open
the third door (box).
PRINCIPAL: (as he opens the door) Hey! What’s happening in here?
As soon as ARCHIE hears the PRINCIPAL’s loud voice, he quickly
grabs SHAKES’s hand, opens his palm and hands him the knife,
EDDIE throws the miniature bicycle at SHAKES’s feet and then they
both dive to the floor, begging SHAKES not to kill them.
ARCHIE and EDDIE: (as the PRINCIPAL enters the classroom, they act like young
kids) Shakes.
PRINCIPAL: I said, what’s happening here? (he sees the knife in SHAKES’s hand)
Boy, what are you doing with a knife in my school?

9
SHAKES: (dropping the knife) it’s not mine.
PRINCIPAL: Shut up!
ARCHIE: (kneeling) he’s trying to kill us, sir … because we don’t want to give him
our lunch.
EDDIE: (also kneeling) this morning sir, he took our train money … transport
money to go back to the township.
ARCHIE: And now we have to walk back for two hours, sir.
DAPHNE: They are lying, sir. They are the ones who stole my lunch box … and
after that they stole Angelique’s new bicycle. (pointing at the miniature
bicycle)
EDDIE: Yes, it’s true … we can’t deny that. We stole it because … Bro Shakes
told us to steal it.
PRINCIPAL: Who’s Bro Shakes?
ARCHIE and EDDIE: (pointing at SHAKES) Him.
ARCHIE: And then he took the lunch box back to Daphne to tell her that he found
it because he wanted Daphne to see him as a hero.
EDDIE: Because he loves Daphne … he told her, and Daphne smeared her
sandwiches on his face. When we laughed at him, he made us steal
the bicycle and told us to give it to Daphne …
ARCHIE: And then he made Eddie tell Daphne that he loves her.
PRINCIPAL: Is this true, Daphne? Did this boy (pointing at SHAKES) tell you that he
loves you? (silence) Daphne!
SHAKES: Please, Daphne.
DAPHNE: Yes, sir. He said he loves me.
PRINCIPAL: Did you smear sandwiches on his face?
DAPHNE: Yes, sir, I did.
SHAKES: Sir. They are lying … it was them … they are behind all this … they
bullied me. Please, sir, I’m clean.
PRINCIPAL: Quiet! (pause; he slowly walks to SHAKES to investigate closely; he
spots a dab of mayonnaise on SHAKES’s ear) And what’s this, then?
(SHAKES sticks his finger in his ear, looks at the mayonnaise, shrugs)
Well, then, it’s clear what’s happening here. (pause) Dear God, give
me the courage to change the things I can. (he sighs) I walk in here.
You two boys are begging for your life and you … Bro Shakes …
holding a knife in my school. Give me that knife. (SHAKES picks up the
knife and gives it to the PRINCIPAL)

10
SHAKES: Sir … please, listen to my …
PRINCIPAL: Be quiet! I will not tolerate this in my school. (to EDDIE and ARCHIE)
You two, get up and go and write your exams. Next time when
someone bullies you, come to me immediately.
BOTH: Okay, sir. Thank you, sir.
They go out of the classroom. When they are out, they laugh
uncontrollably, shaking their hands. They open the second black box
from stage left, close it and sit on the first and second black boxes with
their backs facing the audience. They are writing the exam.
PRINCIPAL: You, Bro Shakes. In my school there are only children who want to
learn. I am going to write a special letter myself to your parents. A knife
in my school? Don’t you know that’s a big issue in this country today?
You are not going to write any exam … I want you out of my school this
instant, before I call the police. A knife in my school!
The PRINCIPAL leaves, gets up on the black boxes and goes upstairs
as DAPHNE did before
SHAKES: Please, Daphne, you’ve got to talk to him. I don’t love you.
DAPHNE: So you hate me?
SHAKES: No … I …
DAPHNE: Why would I care?
SHAKES: Because I am a nice person.
DAPHNE: Oh! So your bicycle story was you trying to show me that you are nice
… by bullying other nice kids … so I can fall in love with you. Shame on
you … you deserve what you got. I am going to write my exam.
She leaves, opens the second box from stage right, close it, then sit on
it with her back to the audience. She writes. By this time the principal
also has his back to the audience, writing a letter.
SHAKES: (falling on his knees, he screams) Noooo! I am a nice person. (he turns
to the audience and appeals to them) Aren’t I?
