First Term English Exam
Part One: Reading (15 pts)
/A. Comprehension (7 pts)
Read the text carefully and do the following activities.
Discrimination happens when a person is treated less favourably than another. This unhuman
behaviour often causes disputes between people that come from different ages, races, ethnicities, cultural
backgrounds or even towards people with disabilities. In recent years, more and more cases of
discrimination have been reported than ever, this is due to the big diversity in communities, schools and
workplaces.
In the workplace, there are often regulations that protect employees; however, discrimination may
still exist directly or indirectly, and things become worse when one doesn’t know his own rights.
Sometimes, right-abusive companies recruit women to do the same job as men, only to pay them less
because they are a different gender, other times they prevent black people from climbing the promotion
ladder because they perceive them as an inferior race, let alone recruiting children to work in bad
conditions for a low income because they do not know and cannot defend their rights.
Human rights organizations and labour unions are required to collaborate more often nowadays to
sensitize people about the abuse of human rights in the workplace, and also to spot and punish those
who deliberately practice such behaviours to remain in possession of wealth and power. As long as
everyone is united in the fight campaign against discrimination in the workplace, we remain optimistic
that the end of this phenomena is closer than ever.
