Topic:- Plastic pollution – A modern threat
Introduction:-
Plastic pollution has became a modern threat, plastic is used all around us,
while carrying items from the shop in a plastic bag, while buying plastic
water bottles for water when we are outside our home and we don’t have a
bottle, Also many utensils are made up of plastic, and food made in them can
contain very small amounts of plastic which is harmful for our health. Plastic
is not only harmful for us, but for plants, animals and nature. It’s also a
global issue because the plastic is just thrown away especially in water
bodies, which is not only harmful but makes the place dirty.
Meaning of Plastic pollution:-
Plastic pollution means people throw away plastic waste such as bottles,
wrappers, bags etc. here and there especially in water bodies such as lakes,
rivers etc. or on land. It harms people, plants, animals as it has bad health
effects and it is also harmful for nature as it takes hundreds to thousand of
years to break down, or sometimes it doesn’t even fully degrade – it just
breaks into smaller and smaller pieces called microplastics.
Causes of Plastic pollution:-
Plastic pollution has become a global threat and is one of the most serious
issues for nature and the future of the planet. It affects land, water bodies,
people, animals, plants and etc. There are many causes behind plastic
pollution and together these causes make it a global threat but
understanding them can help us solve this issue and to control and reduce it.
1. Using plastic products too much.
Plastic is cheap and affordable and it is also lightweight and durable which is
why many people and companies use it and it is used in almost everything
which includes packaging, household items and clothing, furniture,
electronics etc. because of it’s versatility, people choose plastic over many
other materials. This overuse and overdependence of plastic has increased
the production and use of plastic massively. Every single year, billions of
kilograms of plastic are produced throughout the world, and a large fraction
of it ends up as waste.
2. Plastics that can be only used once (Single – Use
Plastics)
One of the biggest contributors to plastic pollution is the worldwide use of
single – use plastics, which are the plastics that can only be used once and
than are discarded, for example plastic bags, straws, cups, bottles, food
wrappers and cutlery. These items are used for a very small period,
sometimes just a little amount of minutes – but they remain in the natural
environment for hundreds of years and harms it. Since many single – use
plastics do not get re – used, they end up land, roads and especially in water
bodies.
3. Doing disposal of plastic waste carelessly
A vital cause of plastic pollution is the disposing of plastic waste carelessly
and improperly. A large number of people throw things made up of plastic
into open spaces, drains, rivers on directly onto the land instead of using
proper dustbins or recycling centers. In some places, there is not enough
waste collection systems or facilities that will re – use it, which makes this
issue even worse. When plastic waste is not taken care of properly, it is
carried by wind and rain into lakes, rivers, oceans, where it causes harm to
the life living in those water bodies and also pollutes the water.
4. Deficiency of Re – use and Waste Management
Even though plastic can technically be re – used, only a small fraction of
plastic waste is actually re – used. Many plastics are mixed with other
materials or are contaminated with food or dirt, which makes it difficult to re
– use it. In many countries recycling systems are very weak and
undeveloped, which is the reason why only a small fraction of awareness
within people about the importance of recycling. As a result, a huge amount
of plastic waste is either burned, buried in landfills or dumped in the
environment.
5. Industrial and Commercial Waste
Factories and industries that use or produce plastic frequently generate huge
amounts of plastic waste. In many cases, this waste is not properly treated or
disposed of, and it adds up in nearby rivers, lakes, or open land. In particular,
the packaging factories produces a lot of plastic waste that is thrown away
after use. Online shopping and fast delivery services have also increased
their plastic use, which adds up to the problem.
6. Marine and Fishing Activities
The water bodies are especially effected by plastic pollution. A great amount
of plastic waste found in water bodies comes from fishing activities. Fishing
nets, lines, ropes and traps made of plastic are often lost or thrown into the
sea where they can trap or kill animals that live in those water bodies. These
items are called as “ghost gear” and it can stay in the water bodies for many
years, causing serious damage to marine ecosystems.
7. Tourism and Public events
Tourist places, beaches, parks and public gatherings frequently leads to a
large amount of plastic waste. Many tourists and event – goers leave behind
plastic bottles, food containers and bags. If bins for wastes are not available
or aren’t used properly, this plastic waste pollutes the environment. Seasonal
increases in tourism leads to a sudden rise in local plastic pollution.
8. Microplastics from Products we use Everyday
Many items we use everyday such as synthetic clothes (like polyester),
personal care products (like scrubs and toothpaste), and cleaning agents,
contain very small plastics known as microplastics. These tiny particles are
washed down drains and pass through water treatment plants, entering
rivers and oceans. Once they are there, It is eaten by fish and other animals,
and may even enter the human food chain.
Conclusion
In conclusion, plastic pollution is caused by a mix of human habits, industrial
practices, and underdeveloped waste management systems. From using
plastic in excess to disposing it of carelessly, our actions are leading to a
growing environmental crisis. To reduce plastic pollution and contribute to a
cleaner and better earth, we need to use plastic more responsibly with more
care, improving recycling systems, and shifting towards more eco – friendly
alternatives.
Effects of Plastic Pollution
Environmental Impact
Plastic waste gathers everywhere on the earth, every corner, from urban
areas and streets to distant natural habitats of many animals and plants.
Non – Biodegradable Waste:- Most of the plastics take hundreds to
thousands of years to degrade and break down, remaining in the for a
very long time.
Chemical Leaching:- Plastics release toxic chemicals into soil and
water which pollutes food chains of many animals and people.
Oceanic Garbage Patches:- The Great Pacific Garbage patch has
a span of 1.6 million Square Kilometers, that traps the marine life
including fishes in floating debris and waste. There are even more
oceanic garbage patches other than the Great Pacific Garbage patch.
Even microplastics which are very small plastics have been found in the
deepest ocean trenches and Arctic Ice, which proves that plastic
pollution is everywhere and spares no environment.
Threat to Wildlife
Animals suffer a lot due to plastic pollution, this also includes both terrestrial
and marine ecosystems.
Ingestion:-Thousands of species, which includes birds, fish and
mammals, mistake plastic for food, which leads to injuries in their inner
body, starvation and death.
Entanglement:- Fishing nets, plastic rings and packaging materials
traps many animals which restricts movement and also causes injuries.
Microplastics and Bioaccumulation:- Plastic degrades and breaks
down into microscopic pieces, contaminated prey, toxic substances
gathers at dangerous levels.
More than 100,000 marine animals lose their lives due to plastic waste
and seabird populations worldwide have absorbed microplastics.
Human Health Risks
Humans are not immune to plastic’s harmful effects, as pollutants infiltrate
food, water and even the air.
Microplastic Consumption:- Studies have shown that microplastics
are present even in bottled water, seafood, and even human blood.
It’s long – term exposure can also lead to inflammation, organ
damage and endocrine disruption.
Toxic Chemical exposure:- Many plastics contain BPA, phthalates
and heavy metals, which disrupt hormones and increase cancer
risks.
Airborne Pollution:- Burning plastic releases carcinogenic
chemicals like dioxins, worsening air pollution and respiratory
diseases.
With plastic which is present in our drinking water which we drink everyday,
clothes which we wear and food packaging, avoiding plastic’s exposure is
very difficult and is becoming even more difficult day by day.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond our environmental destruction, plastic pollution also damages
economics and communities.
Waste Management Burden:- Countries struggle with excessive
plastic waste, leading to overflowing landfills, clogged drainage
systems, and environmental degradation.
Impact on Industries:- Pollution effects many things including fishing
and tourism leading to income that is lost, lowering fish populations
and polluted beaches which are dirty which deters tourists and visitors.
Social Disparities:- Poorer communities often bear the burnt plastic
waste mismanagement, living near toxic dumpsites with severe health
risks.
The global economic cost of plastic pollution is estimated to be over $13
billion per year, affecting infrastructure, healthcare and industries.
Solutions to Plastic Pollution
As we have seen that plastic pollution ahs became a worldwide issue and has
a very bad effect not only on our environment but also on our health. Here
are some solutions that can tackle this issue:-
Government and Policy Measures
1. Ban Single – use Plastics:- If the government implements strict bans
towards plastic bags, straws, and cutlery forces industries to use
sustainable alternatives instead, this would help to reduce plastic
pollution by a large margin.
2. Stronger Regulations on Microplastics:- Stopping microplastics to
be used in cosmetics, detergents and industrial processes would help a
lot in preventing water contamination.
3. Plastic Taxation:- Levying taxes on plastic production will help to
prevent excessive use and it will encourage innovation in
biodegradable alternatives.
4. Incentives for Circular Economy:- Encouraging businesses to
adopt circular economy models where plastic is reused,
remanufactured, and repurposed instead of discarded.
Corporate and Industrial Initiatives

plastic dumping into water bodies.
Steps by me and my family took to keep the environment
clean.
1. Purchasing items that only we need, not purchasing the ones
that we want but will not be of good use.
2. Use packaging at minimal by opting for the products that have
very less packaging or have no packaging to avoid single – use
plastics.
3. Planning meals early before eating, storing food properly for later
use and composting the scraps of food.
4. Using energy – efficient appliances which do not consume a huge
amount of energy and also switching to LED bulbs and turning of
lights and electronics when they are not in use.
5. Printing paper only when necessary and needed and opting for
more digital alternatives.
6. Planting trees, they absorb carbon dioxide and provide oxygen,
contributing to more cleaner air in the environment.
Slogan and Poem on “My dream clean planet”
Clear skies, green land, clean Earth – Not only a dream, a duty.
Poem
I Dream, The Planet clean
I dream of skies as blue as a shiny sapphire,
Where stars at night look as bright as light.
No smoke to steal clean breaths,
no plastic that washes into oceans.
Where the tress, tall and green,
stand everywhere for the creatures to live.
Where the waves of the rivers sing a tune
and dance towards a direction.
No city haze, no poisoned stream,
just nature showing its beauty,
where everyone unites a clean and peaceful planet.
A planet where people plant,
not take away the lives of the tall hillside helpers
and mend the earth’s future for everyone’s sake.
With each step making a difference, if we unite,
there will be no such thing that we call “impossible”.
