A Colombian family is blessed with a miracle. They all have a magical ability. But the
calm does not last forever. Story of this family and the complications they have.

Highlights the strength of love, forgiveness, understanding, the importance of family, and the
communication.

The movie begins by putting us in context about the miracle that was granted to them with a candle,
from the Madrigal family, a very special Colombian family. The grandmother tells our
protagonist, Mirabel, how it was granted to the family and how it works, mentioning that each
one has a magical door that must be opened, with the purpose of obtaining a magical gift for
part of the haunted house they live in. The children of the village eagerly ask Mirabel
What are the gifts that their relatives have, but they realize that it counts the gifts of everyone,
except for hers. This is because Mirabel was not granted one.
That same night is the ceremony of the little one in the family, and the nerves can be felt, since
that everyone feels a concern that a gift is not given. But the door opens and the gift is
granted to Antonio.
Mirabel feels somewhat displaced from the family as the only one who is not special, so she leaves the party.
and she realizes that something is wrong with the magic, but when she reports it, no one believes her.
Although that doesn't calm her down and she starts to investigate. She discovers that not everything is so perfect, her

Uncle Bruno, who has been missing for a long time, but whenever I ask about him, they treat it
like a taboo subject, people do not talk about Bruno, since his gift is seeing visions of the future, and
since they were not good, people did not hold her in high regard. Mirabel decides to enter her room and
looking for him, but instead of Bruno, he comes across fragments of a vision he had, in which
she appears. The entire family ends up finding out about this, since Mirabel does not appear alone in the
vision, rather it appears with the cracked and broken house behind him. It is then that he decides

They make the vision, giving the opportunity to finish, and discover a possible solution, which
it involves fixing the problems and differences between Mirabel and her older sister Isabella.
Mirabel prepares to see her, and after some comments, we realize that Isabella is suffering.

Those who do not love, we discover that they can not only bring forth flowers, but also with their states of
mood can create more than one style of plant, like cacti, palms, trees, vines... Feeling
more free than ever, Isabella thanks Mirabel and they hug, just like in Bruno's mission,
making the candle burn brighter. It is then that the grandmother arrives, angry about the

the true guilty one is her, for demanding too much and 'passing' quite a bit of her because she has no
special gift. Because of the argument, the candle burns out and the house falls apart, remaining
shattered to pieces.
Mirabel, feeling guilty about what happened, leaves the house without saying anything. Hours later the
they find the grandmother and apologize to each other, realizing that they had focused on the
things differently. At this moment, the grandmother is telling him the story of what happened in that
place, of how they had to flee their home due to the attacks and how their grandfather sacrificed himself to
save his wife and his three children, being afterwards blessed with the miracle and the candle. They embrace each other.
and the butterfly from Bruno's vision appears.
They return home and, together with the whole town, manage to rebuild it, and when Mirabel puts the knob on the
door, it begins to shine appearing on it the whole family engraved and the house returns to
to have the miracle and everyone regains their gifts. Bruno returns home and everyone welcomes him with everything
love that they couldn't give each other all those years, since even though they were separated, Bruno never
he/she stopped loving the family.
In this movie, we can appreciate that Disney weaves the story with a literary movement and adopts
many characteristics of magical realism, especially drawing great inspiration from the works of
Gabriel García Márquez, more specifically his work 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' from which we can
find several references. Magical realism is a literary movement that emerged in the mid
of the twentieth century that seeks to merge in a very diluting way the real and the fantastic, of a
in a very natural way. In this case, the film uses magical realism in a peculiar way,
showing us the fantastic things with a normal and common vision, compared to when
they show the non-fantastic, that there are more perplexed reactions. It is also used on several occasions
the resource of flashbacks.
To make this movie, Byron Howard kept Latin families in mind during the development,
to make it as realistic as possible, she even traveled to Colombia in search of more information and
inspirations, but due to Covid and the pandemic, they had to pause the execution.
One of the main ideas for making the movie was to portray a real family, each
with its things, its personality, and its differences, questioning how well we know our
families and how well they know us.
The gifts of the Madrigal family are what could be called a "double-edged sword," since
they represent the best and the worst, they are a strength but at the same time a weakness.
This movie touches on emotional and psychological themes, joining other Disney films that
they follow the same theme, like 'Inside Out', 'Coco', and 'Soul'. It also touches on the theme of trauma
intergenerational, which deals with the transmission of traumas to the next generations. This is seen
reflected the whole movie in the grandmother's trauma due to the loss of everything, that in order to try
to protect your family and for it not to happen again, but instead of that happening, that fear ends up occurring
and that trauma to their children and grandchildren, causing the tension. This trauma can be appreciated
represented in the form of a metaphor in the cracks of the house, where they keep increasing, reaching
a point of no return.
The movie presents a problem and a solution to that problem, but psychologists have
mentioned that perhaps the speed of resolution of these problems can be
counterproductive for children, as it can create high expectations regarding the
ease of resolution.
A specification is shown in Encanto related to Colombia, there are many things and objects.

We can appreciate a typical 12-string guitar called Tiple.

from Disney's Moana, for which she received an Academy Award nomination. In addition, she has
composed and produced the main theme of the Disney movie Mary Poppins Returns.
Music plays a very important role, not only for accompanying images, but for the
narrative theme. In Mirabel's rap we can appreciate triplets. The melody of 'Two Caterpillars'
it has a motif of descending triplets, and uses the metaphor of change, using the words
caterpillar
In the song 'Waiting for a Miracle', it happens when the protagonist tells you what he wants and everything
what he is willing to do to achieve it. It has a ternary rhythm, in three beats. This style
it is the one Mirabel uses to sing, while the rest of the family sings in just two beats.
making it clear that she is the different one and the one who does not have a gift in the family. The binary rhythm,
it also appears in other songs.
Luisa's song is used by Lin-Manuel to apologize to his sister. It is used in a
a technique called Lyrical stress, which consists of placing an accent on the last part of the
word. There are many rhymes, everything rhymes with everything, they are not just pure rhymes, but there are also the
slant rhymes or lazy rhymes. Luisa imagines the world without stress in a certain part of the
song and it changes the style of rhyme, as it reduces the quantity. When it says again
"pressure" gradually starts again with the stressful rhyme.
In "We Don’t Talk About Bruno" we find a cha-cha-cha rhythm. It is a typical song style.
