Reception
The 11th-century Arab astrologer Al-Biruni described the
reception as a planet that reaches dignity
from another and offers him a compliment, such as "your servant" or
"neighbor". By giving the visitor "a reception", there is
an implication of tolerance and attention from the host,
just like an element of influence and control.
Consider the sun in Libra. It is said that Venus 'receives'.

capacity, Venus is known as
the device of the Sun. Traditional works

of the disposer of a planet when evaluating its own
condition because the well-being of a disposer influences
in any planet in its sign.
Remembering that the ancients referred to the signs
like "houses", the influence of a dispositor can
to resemble that of the owner towards a visitor
resident in their home. The benevolence, the well-being
and the owner's disposition towards the guest is
generally reflect in the comfort of their
stay. It is always a bad sign to find
a planet in a hostile relationship with its own
dispositor, such as finding the weak dispositor or
severely affected.
The Sun in Libra is also received, to a lesser degree,
for Saturn as it has dignity in Libra for
exaltation. If the chart is nocturnal, Mercury offers
a lighter reception as a regent of the
triplicity. If the Sun is at 25 Libra, the receptions
minors by term and face are of Mars and Jupiter,
respectively. At this degree, the Sun is received
for (and therefore has some familiarity with) everyone
the traditional planets, except for the Moon.
The Sun is located in the following table:
Here, not only is the Sun in the exaltation of Saturn,
Saturn is also in the exaltation of the Sun. This
I will call it mutual reception because the planets are
receive mutually. Mutual reception is a
good indication of the familiarity between the planets
and in the previous chart will help to reduce the
hostility of the aspect of the opposition. It demonstrates
that the planets need to remain aware
each other and have a reason to be
equally considered. An allegorical example is
when the leaders of two hostile countries visit
simultaneously their lands. Normally, the
a hostile situation would suggest a great danger, but each
one feels protected by the knowledge of the
vulnerability of the other to its power. Remember that the
exaltation is not always a comfortable dignity. For

at the same time, and we can see from the
dignities involved to what extent are
capable of providing a benefit through the
reception. Being received by signal or exaltation is
much better than being received by term or face.
Where friendly aspects exist among the
planets, mutual reception increases benefits
that arise from active cooperation; reveals a
situation in which there is easy trade of
status and the possibility that each planet acquires
something positive about the other. When it comes to aspects
no friendlies, being received helps to protect a
planet against the harmful effect of the aspect, in such a way
that can still take advantage of the aspect.
Being received means that one is attended to a
planet. It is also less likely to be
damaged by an evil planet when received
for him. This is the reason why many authors
traditionalists have warned that the aspects
they may be unable to produce a result
positive if there is no form of reception between the
planets.
Mutual reception shows the willingness, the
the potential and the inclination of both parties.

of the aspectual contact, but the general condition
of the involved planets will show if there is a
real probability of profit.
In the previous example, mutual reception by
sign shows a skill ready for the Sun and
Saturn be receptive to the influence of the
another. However, both planets are
degraded, so they probably have
few benefits to communicate with each other. Tom
Callanan has referred to the mutual reception of
the planets in detriment like 'two drunkards'
helping each other at home." Where there is
an easy relationship between the planets, this offers
only the potential to be affected by others
instead of turning and distancing themselves from the influence. The
planets are also in opposition, so
metaphorically we can expect that these two
drunks, taking the conversation seriously
another, soon they will start fighting in the street. It is
questionable if the mutual reception really
It would bring a lot of advantage in this situation.
The planet destroyer (that is, the one that rules the
territory) is the one that "receives" the planet that visits its
territory. This planet is receptive to the visitor
but it also transmits its influence over him and the
the planet that is received will be affected by
this. A planet in the exaltation of another can
to feel overwhelmed by your disposer, or through the
contact with them may experience a state
personally exalted. The table as a whole

the meaning falls on the transfer of
influence or power.
In the relationship tables, the lack of reception, or
suggested disparity when a planet receives
one for exaltation while the other does not receive or
receives only for lesser dignity, can represent
a situation in which one colleague puts the other
on a pedestal, but the other unconscious or alone
feels a fleeting interest.

no inclination or practical advantages to avoid
the difficulties.
Deborah Houlding: Brief comparison of the reception in history
One of the first references that is relevant to the notion of reception appears in the
Thesaurus of Antioch of Athens, written in the second half of the 2nd century AD. Although it seems
having been applied only to conjunctions (not to aspects), we find mention of the location
in the dignity of another planet that is used to indicate the transfer of power, and the reception
the mutual of the sign and the house is used to indicate 'reciprocal mastery':
30. Regarding participation
There is communion when two planets must be present in a zodiac sign or must edge it.
while it should be one person's home, it should be the exaltation of another.
32. Regarding the Reciprocal Mastery
It is said that the stars are teachers to one another as long as the exaltation of one and the house
On the other side must be the zodiac in which the stars are located.
33. Concerning the ruler
It is said that a star is the ruler as long as it has more governing relationships.
in some of the zodiacs. I refer to relationships of house, exaltation, trine, limit, phase or
configuration.
The last comment is in agreement with Ptolemy's instruction that the planet that
has the greatest influence over any specific place (like the degree of an eclipse) it
decided partly by the strongest government over the area by sign, exaltation, triplicity and
term.
The extent to which this type of analysis influenced practical astrology in the classical period is
difficult to evaluate at this point where the research is ongoing. The determination of a
ruler obviously had a tremendous meaning and has been a
important consideration throughout the history of astrology, used in a variety
of techniques, such as establishing the lord of the geniture or hyleg. There are other scattered examples of the
use of the principle of reception in ancient texts such as that of Dorotheus, which tells us in the
Book II of Carmen Astrologicum, (18v6) that a conjunction between the Sun and Saturn is
harmful to the father, unless it occurs within the domicile of the Sun or Saturn. (Doroteo)
it also gives us a good sense of the use of dignity and disposition when describing how
the planets act in the houses of other planets at 11:23.
As later references show, at least in the Arab period it was considered that
the ruling planet, like the one that was receiving the other in its dignity, was 'taking on' the
influence of the planet that was aspecting it from its dignities. The word dispositorse
applies to the ruler of dignity, which means 'the one who provides a final arrangement' (to dispose of something)
it means to fix it, to put an end to it, or to put it in order). Through the use of this term
we can see that, although the device planet has a position of control, it is also
obliged by the responsibility to accept the influence that is committed to him,
recognize it and do something with it. The state of acceptance is implicit in the word
"receive." We can also clearly see in Bonatus's explanation that where a
the planet is in aspect with a planet that is in its own dignities, 'it
commits and gives its own disposition and nature and virtue,” even, as Bonatus says.
we, "if they were enemies".
It is worth including a mention of the astrological meaning of the related term.
'disposition', which derives from the same root as the word dispose and depositor but is used in a
Sentdo diferente. Generally speaking, 'disposition' means something similar to character.
temperament or influence ('had a sweet disposition', etc.), and astrologically a planet
'compromising one's disposition to another' is used to demonstrate that a planet imparts its
influence over another planet (the word itself, derived from an association with 'dispose',
it can be used to suggest the act of granting or transferring to another, just like the word
'influence'). In aspects, the planet that is 'compromising your disposition' is the planet in
faster movement that is more easily forming the aspect, and the slower planet
the 'recipient of the provision' is being applied.
So we see that there are two ways in which a planet can be influenced by another.
The first is by aspect, where the fastest planet (often referred to as the 'planet
'pusher' in classical works) exerts its influence on the planet to which it is applied. The second,
for reception, introduce an element of assistance, a return of interest and virtue, and a
link against the planets that damage each other in the process. [3] In reception, a
the disposer accepts a request from a submissive planet in the same way a king does

position in the equation. Of course, the submissive planet also offers its support to the
needs of their ruler, as a subject must support the petitions of their own
king. Both benefit from the fact that they are involved in a power hierarchy.
connected that unite them to recognize and support each other. And after the contact,
when the received planet makes a future aspect, it will be holding or clinging to the power that
it was invested in him by his disposer.
The four references below are chosen because each one, in its own generation, has

continuation of the theory that can be traced back to our earliest detailed sources
until Lilly's works.

The reception is noticeable when a planet enters conjunction or aspect with a planet that
he is the owner of his house, the owner of the house of his honor, the owner of the house of his trinity, his

another planet, and this last one is in a house that communicates strength or [is] in the house of honor,

Liberality means that each of the two planets is in the house of its partner, or in

the reception, as astrological technique and philosophy, has been left in
the path in modern astrological literature. This is partly due to
the reorganization of the classic scheme of dignity to accommodate
the modern planets, but misinformation has also played a
important role. This is unfortunate because the reception and the

In this example, the Moon is applied to Venus through an aspect of
opposition or, in other words, the Moon pushes its meanings to
Venus through an opposition. The questions that an astrologer
must be done in this situation are "Will Venus accept the meanings?

"wants?" So let's take a look at those.
The type of aspect describes the way in which the fastest planet

with an opposition, which is the most intrinsically adversarial. This already
color this relationship with some difficulty. After this, we must
consider the nature of the superior planet; Venus is a planet
inherently beneficial and will naturally try to help others
planets, so this is positive. Another consideration (that is
will be discussed in more depth later) is the reception and here
Venus receives the Moon in its exaltation, which is positive because

Driving management implies that the lighter planets rarely
they manifest their meanings by themselves, and this is correct. This only
it happens in a couple of ways, the first is when a planet is not
applying no aspect. By not having a heavier planet to
transmit their meanings to a planet, they will try to do it
the same based on their own strength and nature. Another circumstance in
the only way a planet must manifest its meanings by itself is if the
lighter planet applies to a heavier planet that is
retrograde or Combust.
Applying to a retrograde planet results in what is called
a return of light. Given that the two planets apply to each other,
they essentially play a game of celestial hot potato with the
meanings. In the end, the meanings remain with the creator,
who recovers them with a big label of 'Return to
"Sender". This is considered unfortunate unless the planet
of dignified origin, which gives them the strength to achieve their
meaning. Finally, the application to a Combust planet results in
result that the implicit light in the aspect is lost in the brightness of the Sun
close. The message is lost. This can be mitigated if the planet more
heavy is Combust in his home or exaltation (being in his Car,
and therefore protected from the rays of the Sun).
A great amount of details is revealed when we analyze
aspects related to the thrust. Also add more
depth to our understanding of the doctrine of aspect
general. Even so, it can only take us so far. The next

to give the same level of attention to the reception technique, which is
one of the most consistent and obvious ways to know if pushing is going to
to succeed or not.
The reception is a more complex technique because it requires a
firm knowledge of several other classical techniques. It is not only
it is necessary to understand the theory of aspects, but also the
planetary nature, as well as planetary dignity. With all
these separate mixed considerations, we can obtain a
appropriate image of the reception and push together to help us
delineate graphs more effectively.
Essentially, reception is what happens when a planet receives
it is looking at another planet that is one of its lords. This means that
every time a planet emerges in the planet that is home,
exaltation, triplicity, term or face lord of the sign in which it is
finds, a reception is taking place. The following figure
illustrate this point. Here Mercury applies to the conjunction of the Sun in
Leo. Leo is the home of the Sun, so the Sun is receiving the
Mercury conjunction.
Classically, the zodiac signs were conceptualized as the
houses of the planets. So, as the planets moved
through the signs, it was thought that they went through the houses of the
others (the classic term "domicile" used for a planet in its
reign - Sun in Leo, Moon in Cancer - refers to itself
this). This means that Jupiter does not simply enjoy ruling
the signs of Sagittarius and Pisces, but these are places that are
like his home and there he has certain responsibilities. Likewise,
Jupiter is expected to fulfill certain duties with the planets.
that are found in those signs, especially if they can look at it
while they are there. This is the reception; a planet welcomes
another in his home and treats them as a host would treat his guest.
There are some keywords to facilitate the understanding of what
receives exactly. The planets that receive others
they provide, they accept them, they give them permission and cooperate with them. Without
embargo, they do not show affection or love or hate. Jupiter will not receive either

The reception is a planetary relationship and, as such, it is important.
scrutinize both planets to adequately determine the
result of the relationship. Although it is a relationship, it is not
necessarily a relationship of equals. But however, both
They play important, although different, roles.
The first paper is for the receiving planet. The planet that receives to
another in its dignity has the role of host. This host must
take care of your guest and assume responsibility for their well-being and
security the best it can be. This will be determined by the
location, the dignity and the nature of the host planet; the idea
It is central that the planets share the fortune or poverty of their
host. Therefore, a planet that has a lot can give a lot,
but one who lacks will not be able to provide with such wealth and even
it can end up harming its host by being unable to gather the resources
to carry what is being pushed. let them pass.
The other role is for the planet that is received, and this planet assumes the
guest role. Generally, we think of guests as
people who must behave well or be at risk of being
ask them to leave, but this is not the case for the planets, since their
hosts cannot evict them. This means that the planets
hosts are often attacked by their guests who can

In this example, Mercury in Pisces is being received by Jupiter in

naturally beneficial, showing innate kindness, and is
placed in its exaltation of Cancer, so it has many
resources to provide. The only negative that affects Jupiter is
its location in the twelfth house, but otherwise, Jupiter is a
great host who will be willing and able to produce what
it means Mercury.
What is happening with Mercury? Mercury is placed in Pisces, which is the
sign of its detriment and fall being the ruler of the third and
twelfth house. Therefore, Mercury is not doing well and is
meaning some quite difficult things. Represents a
ill-mannered guest abundantly provided by a host
generous. This application and reception with Jupiter shows the
probability that the meanings of Mercury arise, but these
meanings may not be pleasant things to experience for a
individual. The need for Mercury can also be somewhat overwhelming
for Jupiter, who has opened up to working with a difficult planet.
As the previous scenario suggests, there may be relationships of
receptions that are not so advantageous for individuals. It is

asking for help with something useful?
These questions are usually answered with simple things like
the location, the planetary nature, and the meaning. We see this type
of considerations with greater clarity in quite situations
extremes. The most notable examples are the considerations
related to health and livelihoods, especially if the

of the First house (which means the life of the sick individual) and of
Lord of the Eighth House (the planet that would signify the
death). We should be concerned if one of them applies to the other
(because it could indicate the possibility of succumbing to the disease), to
less than the Lord of the Eighth receives the Lord of the First in his
dignities. In such a case, the Lord of the Eighth would be cooperating or
allowing the house of the Lord of the First to do as it wishes,
in this case, just live and argue the recovery because

embargo, the opposite is dangerous. In the cases where the Lord of

From this, we can extrapolate other cases in which to receive
certain planets may not be as advantageous or safe. For example, it is
he prefers that the malefic planets receive others in their domicile, already
that their evil is restricted towards those who receive and
must be protected. This consideration also applies to the Sun and the
planets are not damaged by the Combustion when they join it
in Aries or Leo. However, the reception of malefic planets is not
as fortunate as it shows other planets that allow evil
behavior and the significance of the malevolent. Similarly, it is
more effective for the planet than meaning matter receiving the planet
what the consultant, the initiator, or the native means. This shows that
Everything that is sought is willing to work with the individual.
It is also important to keep in mind that benefic planets do not
They require reception to produce things. Since it is in its own

it is easier. On the other hand, the malefic planets require
reception to allow things to be perfected, because

The effects that reception has on aspects and relationships.
planetary aspects are more clearly seen in the work of Guido Bonatti. To
beginning of your schedule text, it enumerates the different ways in
that the aspects perfect and provoke events. The following table

it doesn't even happen.
Bonatti's table makes the effects of reception much
easier to understand. The most difficult aspects become more
easy if the reception is there to help smooth them out. Even
it has the effect of making an intrinsically difficult aspect such as the
square functions more like a friendly aspect.
Throughout most of this, the given reception examples
they operate through the dignities of the domicile or exaltation. This is
a very powerful form of reception, but it is not limited to these
circumstances. Reception can also occur through the
lower forms of dignity (triplicity, term, and face), but given
that these inferior forms are shared by multiple planets in
a single sign, multiple levels of reception are required to be
effective. This is known as perfect reception and only
when the planets receive each other perfectly they can
obtain all the benefits of reception.
To qualify as a perfect reception, a planet must receive
another at home or exaltation or in any combination of two of
the lower levels at the same time. That is to say, perfect reception occurs in
the reception by mail, by exaltation, by triplicity and term, by
triplicity of face, or by face to face. term. Essentially, if
we compare hosting with receiving a guest in their own home and
to have the authority to decide something there, then the reception by
a part of a lesser dignity would be like trying to take authority
about someone else's house. Saturn does not have enough authority
about Taurus in general to have the final word on something, and the
planets that are applied there would be better to consult Venus. Without
embargo, if the planets apply to Saturn from 22° -26° Taurus
where Saturn has dignity both by term and by face,
so this would be like asking to do something in the room of Saturn
in the house of Venus, where she has the appropriate authority.
Finally, the last type of reception is perhaps the most well-known, and
it is mutual reception. This type of reception is fundamentally the
same, but instead of a planet being in the dignity of another when
what is aspecting, both planets are in the dignity of the other,
like Mars in Leo in a trine aspect with the Sun in Aries.
This is very fortunate, as it shows that both planets are
willing to work and cooperate with each other. In cases where the
astrologers are trying to find the best outcome for two
parts (like marriages), mutual reception is the best place
for which to fight. That said, its effectiveness is determined in the same
way that the general reception; the force of the two planets
the same is essential.
In this previous example, the Moon in Scorpio is in an aspect
trine with Mars in Cancer. Although this is a mutual reception, not
it's very effective or particularly useful, since both planets are
essentially weakened in those signs, so none have the
resources or the ability to help others. This is essentially
similar to two drunken individuals helping each other to walk to
home; they will not go very far, but they are together.
Mutual reception has several incorrect assumptions.
associated. Perhaps the most common thing is that the planets that participate
in a mutual reception, they can exchange places with each other, without
embargo, a review of the classical literature regarding this
technique makes it very difficult to see where such could have arisen
assumption.
Another common mistake is that planets in mutual reception gain
an additional dignity of their relationship. We see this documented with
greater clarity in the textbook Christian Astrology by William
Lilly. However, although Lilly seemed to include him in her work, she did not
he seemed to use it himself in his example graphs. Likewise
However, the previous authors did not include anything that suggested such
crossed dignity possible.
One last misconception regarding mutual reception is that
it must occur at the same level of dignity. For example, the reception
the mutual relationship between Saturn and Mercury should not take a form of domicile
at home. Mercury in Libra can look at Saturn in Gemini and
this is also a perfect mutual reception where Mercury receives
Saturn in its domicile, and Saturn also receives Mercury in its
exaltation. This can also work in the lower forms of
dignity where Venus at 12° Leo can be in mutual reception with
Jupiter at 12° Taurus. This would cause Jupiter to receive Venus through
triplicity and face, while Venus welcomed Jupiter for
address.
The reception helps astrologers better understand the
planetary relationships and explore in depth how the planets interact
to others who occupy their worthy places. It allows astrologers a
additional level of knowledge to see why some squares
they work more easily than others and why some locations
difficult things do not turn out to be that difficult. However, there is another layer in the
planetary relationships that function as something opposite to reception and
research how planets treat those located in
their weaknesses. This consideration will be discussed in depth in the
last delivery, "Rejection".
