REFLECTION PARAGRAPH ON 1st ASSIGNMENT:
Reflection on Argumentative Essay Assignment
Communication Competency
I wrote the argumentative essay assignment using Microsoft word in the written
communication course. In this reflection, I am going to evaluate myself using the
communication competency success indicators. In the indicator number 1. Determines the
nature and extent of information needed, I consider myself as an advance level.
The assignment was about writing an argumentative essay using the writing skills that we were
taught in class. The most difficult point that I faced while writing the assignment, was choosing
an interesting topic to write about and finding the materials needed for that particular topic. I
overcame this obstacle by asking my instructor for sources to help me chose and write an
interesting topic. Eventually I came to the conclusion of writing about the study of ethnology.
Ethnology is a branch of Anthropology which study and analyze different types of cultures, in
terms of their historical growth and origins. It seeks to distinguish the similarities and
differences of cultures to then achieve one general rule about how cultures work and thrive.
The essay consists of an argument between two different sides. One side thinks that ethnology
is an old and outdated subject to be taught in universities and the other side thinks that
ethnology is an important subject to learn. As an advanced level in determining the nature and
extent of information needed to write about the subject. It was easy for me to gather the ideas
and information needed once I got the topic and the sources to gather the materials from. This
assignment taught me an important skill, which is the skill of choosing a topic to write about
and gathering information to help me write about the subject.
REFLECTION PARAGRAPH ON 2nd ASSIGNMENT:
Reflection on 3-Minutes Presentation Assignment
Communication Competency
I made the 3-minutes presentation assignment using Microsoft PowerPoint in the oral
communication course. In this reflection, I am going to evaluate myself using the
communication competency success indicators. In the indicator number 5. Delivers
effective oral communication, I consider myself as an advance level.
The assignment was about preparing a 3 minutes presentation for a job interview using the oral
communication skills explained in class. One of the difficulties that I straggled with while
preparing my presentation, was organizing what I wanted to say in the time frame giving to us
by the instructor. Another point, was figuring out what to say to make my presentation
interesting to the other side. So as usual, I went to my instructor for advice on what to say in
order to make the presentation interesting and how should I organize my presentation. He
pointed me to some videos for guidance and he told me to practice more in order to figure out
how should I present the presentation. I went home and made a schedule for preparing and
practicing the presentation. Each day I decided to work an hour on my presentation for five
days until am confident with what am going to say. On the day of the presentation, I was the
student who delivered effective presentation in the job interview and got an A+ for that
assignment. One of the most important skills I learned while doing the assignment, was the
ability to organize my thoughts and conveying them in written words as well as orally to others.
So, the key for success in oral communication is to practice what you are going to say more
and more until you feel confident in what you are going to say.
