What are Short Stories?
Short stories (SS) are bonus chapters about 2-5 pages long for the light novel
which are distributed by certain bookstores when a new volume is released in
Japan. Each light novel volume may have 4–10 of these short stories from
different bookstores and events.
What is the Volume 5.5 SS Booklet?
The Vol. 5.5 Special Edition SS Booklet compiles all the short stories released from
Volume 1 to 5 into one place with a bonus chapter called “The Little Devil’s
Temptation.”
This booklet was given to readers who purchased the Special Edition of Volume
5.5 in Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, or Thailand. Yen Press, the official English
licensor, decided not to translate the special edition, making English the only
language without an official translation for the SS Booklet.
The only short story Yen Press translated was Volume 1’s “A Power Outage, Anxiety, and
Warmth,” as this SS was later printed inside all copies of Vol. 1 in Japan after Hanekoto became
the illustrator.
What is Volume 5.5? Should I read it?
Volume 5.5 is a standalone volume released between Volumes 5 and 6. It has 16
side stories (not short stories) that are as long as normal chapters. These side
stories take place between Volumes 1 and 4 in the story. They add more detail
and a different perspective on past events, touch on character backstories, and
develop subplots that weren’t written in the main story.
This volume can be read any time after Vol. 4, but we recommend reading it before Vol. 7 or Vol.
10 as they develop the backstories introduced in Vol 5.5.
