1
Date: 15.09.2025
Due date: 25.09.2025
1 a) A simple harmonic motion is described by 𝑥 = 𝑎𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜔𝑡 − 𝜙). Find the phase constant if the starting
point of the motion is (i) 𝑎, (ii) −𝑎, and (iii) 0. (3)
𝑎
b) For each of the different values of 𝜙, find the value of 𝜔𝑡 at which 𝑥 = − . (3)
√2

2. An object is placed on a rigid horizontal surface that vibrates vertically so that its motion is given by
𝑦 = 𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜔𝑡 + 𝜙), where 𝐴 is the amplitude, 𝜔 = 2𝜋𝑓 is the angular frequency, and 𝜙 is the initial
phase. Given that 𝑓 = 7 𝐻𝑧, find the minimum amplitude for which the mass loses contact with the
surface. (6)

3. A particle is simultaneously subjected to three simple harmonic motions all of the same frequency and
in the x direction. The amplitudes are 4 mm, 6 mm and 9 mm. The phase difference between the first
and the second is 40° and between the second and third is 55°, find the amplitude of the resultant
displacement and its phase relative to the first (4 cm amplitude) component. (10)

4. The two mass-spring systems shown on the right execute simple harmonic series parallel
motion for small displacements from the equilibrium position. Find the angular
frequency of oscillation 𝜔 if:
a) both springs have the same stiffness 𝑠, (5)
b) both springs have different stiffness 𝑠1 and 𝑠2 . (6)

5. In Desmos, plot the functions:

i) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥
ii) 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛 (𝑥 + 90)
iii) ℎ(𝑥) = sin (𝑥 + 45)
a) Tabulate these functions in the range 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 360° with step size 30°, e.g. as shown in the figure
below. Use the Settings tab (highlighted in red) to adjust the axes and step size. (2)
b) Now make another table with values of 𝑓(𝑥) in the 𝑥-column and 𝑔(𝑥) in the 𝑦-column. Plot the
graph. What do you observe? (3)

c) Repeat for 𝑓(𝑥) and ℎ(𝑥). Record your observations. (2)
