This operating manual describes the hardware and how to use the
following safe analogue input modules:
• PSS AI and
• PSS1 AI.
You need to be familiar with the above manuals in order to understand this
manual.
This manual is intended for instruction and should be retained for future
reference.
Overview of manual

could lead to serious injury and death, and indicates preventive
measures that can be taken.
WARNING!
This warning must be heeded! It warns of a hazardous situation that
could lead to serious injury and death, and indicates preventive
measures that can be taken.
CAUTION!
This refers to a hazard that can lead to a less serious or minor injury plus
material damage, and also provides information on preventive measures
that can be taken.
NOTICE
This describes a situation in which the product or devices in its immediate
environment could be damaged. It also provides information on preventive
measures that can be taken.
INFORMATION
This gives advice on applications and provides information on special
features, as well as highlighting areas within the text that are of particular
importance.
Terminology
• The term “module” or “PSS(1) AI” will be used when the description is valid
for all modules.
If the description only relates to a specific module, the product name for that
module will be used (e.g. PSS AI or PSS1 AI).
• The term “PSS” will be used when the description is valid for both the PSS
3000 and PSS 3100.
If the description only relates to a specific unit, the product name for that
unit will be used (e.g. PSS 3000).
• In this manual, the Pilz system software “PSS SW PG” is abbreviated to
“programming device”.
The PSS(1) AI module is a safe, analogue input module. It has six voltage
inputs for transducers and input devices with 10 V outputs.

INFORMATION
The software package “PSS Standard Function Blocks, MBS PSS AI2” is
available for the PSS(1) AI module. The PSS(1) AI module is only approved
for use in conjunction with SB 104 from this software package. The software
allows you, for example, to monitor, test and update analogue measured
values.
Notes
Intended use
The PSS(1) AI module is intended for use as an analogue/digital converter
for safety-related applications. The two modules can only be used as
follows:
• The PSS AI module is intended for use on the PSS 3000 module rack.
• The PSS1 AI module is intended for use on the PSS 3100 module rack.
The PSS(1) AI module can be mounted in any free failsafe slot on the
module rack.
The PSS(1) AI module may only be used in conjunction with SB 104 from the
software package “PSS Standard Function Blocks, MBS PSS AI2”. This
package is used for internal tests on the module.
INFORMATION
Use of the PSS(1) module must be supported by the programming device.
The module is supported from the following version of the programming
device:
Precise data for the module is given in the chapter entitled “Technical
Details”. Use of the module outside the specifications stated here will be
deemed improper application.
INFORMATION
The module is suitable for use in safety-related applications. With the use
of relevant components, correct wiring, control, programming and circuitry,
category 4 in accordance with EN 954-1, 07/97 and AK 6 in accordance with
DIN V 19 250, 05/94 are achievable.
WARNING!
To achieve the corresponding category or requirement class, the whole
system including all safety-related components (parts, devices, user
program etc.) must be taken into account in the assessment. For this
reason, Pilz cannot accept liability for the correct classification into a
category or requirement class.
Safety guidelines
All rules and regulations for accident prevention relating to the specific
area of application must be met. In particular, VDE and all local
regulations regarding health and safety must be observed. Please ensure
you have read the information provided in the “PSS 3000/PSS 3100
Installation Manual”.
You should also be familiar with the details provided in the “PSS-Range
Safety Manual”.
• Are familiar with the basic regulations concerning health and safety /
accident prevention
• Have read and understood the safety guidelines given in this manual
• Are familiar with the requirements stated in the “PSS-Range Safety
Manual”.
• Keep as large a distance as possible between the PSS and any sources
of electromagnetic interference (especially frequency converters) or
make sure the source of interference has sufficient screening.
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage components on the PSS.
Before you touch the module, ensure against discharge by touching an
earthed, conductive surface or by wearing an earthed wristband, for
example.
• Ensure the module is also protected from ESD during operation.
• Use screened, twisted cable for the connections on the input circuits.
• The supply voltage cable should be physically separate from the input
circuits.
• Ensure there is sufficient earthing.
Fault prevention
Although using the PSS(1) AI module guarantees a high level of safety,
not all potential faults can be detected and managed. Care must be taken
to ensure that this high level of safety is not compromised due to errors
and lack of attention to detail when the system is configured, assembled
and programmed.
The following points contribute to the safety of the system just as much as
the use of safe components:
INFORMATION
Pay special attention to the information and requirements specified in the
following manuals for the PSS-range:
Disposal
The module must be disposed of properly when it reaches the end of its
service life.
Notes
Inputs
Each of the voltage inputs (I0 ... I5) has three channels. The voltage
signals are filtered and passed on to the A/D converter via a multiplexer.
The resolution of the A/D converter is 12 bits. The value of the least
significant bit (LSB) is 5 mV. A dual-port RAM stores the converted values.
INFORMATION
A table showing the XW addresses of the PSS(1) as well as further
information regarding configuration can be found in the chapter entitled
“Configuration”.
Use SB 104 from the software package “PSS Standard Function Blocks
MBS PSS AI2” to update measured values, otherwise an appropriate user
program will need to be generated in the PSS failsafe section.

The test conversion is used to check the module's functionality. This function
is performed by the standard function block SB 104. New test patterns are
continually stored in the dual-port RAM. These test patterns are passed on to
the analogue inputs via a D/A converter. The PSS CPU then re-reads the
values at the inputs and compares them with the stored test pattern.
Notes
CAUTION!
The module is equipped with highly sensitive components.
Electrostatic discharge can damage components.
Before touching the module, ensure against discharge by touching an
earthed, conductive surface or by wearing an earthed wristband, for
example.
Ensure the module is also protected from electrostatic discharge (ESD)
during operation.

Alignment algorithm
INFORMATION
“Av. value with prefix” is the default entry, but other entries are possible.
The entry you select will depend on your specific process. However,
always ensure that you select signed values.
Tolerance value
In the field for tolerance values, enter the maximum deviation permitted for
the words that are read in.
INFORMATION
The default setting for the tolerance value in the programming device is 20
(corresponds to 20 LSB). The entry you select will depend on your specific
process.
WARNING!
With the alignment algorithm and tolerance value, enter the maximum
permitted deviation between the measured values in the three channels of
each voltage input. The tolerance value should be such that, if a unit is
defective or a fault occurs, significant changes in the measured values
cannot trigger a hazardous situation.
The higher the tolerance value, the greater the risk of a hazardous situation
occuring.
