you have read the information provided in the “PSS 3000/PSS 3100
Installation Manual”.

You should also be familiar with the details provided in the “PSS-Range
Safety Manual”.

3-2 Operating Manual PSS(1) AI

Use of qualified personnel
The module may only be assembled, installed, programmed, commissioned,
operated, maintained and decommissioned by qualified personnel who,
because they are:

• Qualified electrical engineers or

• Have received training from qualified electrical engineers,
are suitably experienced to operate devices, systems, plant and machinery in
accordance with the general standards and guidelines for safety technology.

It is the company's responsibility only to employ personnel who:

• Are familiar with the basic regulations concerning health and safety /
accident prevention
• Have read and understood the safety guidelines given in this manual
• Are familiar with the requirements stated in the “PSS-Range Safety
Manual”.

Device-specific safety regulations

• Keep as large a distance as possible between the PSS and any sources
of electromagnetic interference (especially frequency converters) or
make sure the source of interference has sufficient screening.
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage components on the PSS.
Before you touch the module, ensure against discharge by touching an
earthed, conductive surface or by wearing an earthed wristband, for
example.
• Ensure the module is also protected from ESD during operation.
• Use screened, twisted cable for the connections on the input circuits.
• The supply voltage cable should be physically separate from the input
circuits.
• Ensure there is sufficient earthing.

Operating Manual PSS(1) AI 3-3

Safety

• External measures must be taken to protect against excess temperature,

eg, air conditioning in the control cabinet.
• To achieve a higher level of safety, carry out a feasibility check on the input
signals.
• Under no circumstances should a constant overload of +15 V per
voltage input be exceeded, otherwise the PSS will switch to a safe
condition.
• Only safe signals should be used at the module's analogue inputs. If this is
not possible, the signals must also be monitored (e.g. by means of a
feasibility check on the input signals).
• With safety-related applications, always use standard function block SB
104 to test the modules (included in the software package “PSS Standard
Function Blocks MBS PSS AI2”).
• With the alignment algorithm and tolerance value, enter the maximum
permitted deviation between the measured values in the three channels of
each voltage input. The tolerance value should be such that, if a unit is
defective or a fault occurs, significant changes in the measured values
cannot trigger a hazardous situation.
The higher the tolerance value, the greater the risk of a hazardous situation
occuring.

Fault prevention
Although using the PSS(1) AI module guarantees a high level of safety,
not all potential faults can be detected and managed. Care must be taken
to ensure that this high level of safety is not compromised due to errors
and lack of attention to detail when the system is configured, assembled
and programmed.

The following points contribute to the safety of the system just as much as
the use of safe components:

• Careful and extensive safety analysis

• Careful project planning
• Correct wiring and cabling
• Conformity with EMC regulations

3-4 Operating Manual PSS(1) AI

• Conformity with regulations concerning screening and earthing measures
• Careful programming.

INFORMATION
Pay special attention to the information and requirements specified in the
following manuals for the PSS-range:

• “PSS-Range Safety Manual”

• “PSS 3000/3100 Installation Manual”
• “FS System Description”

Disposal
The module must be disposed of properly when it reaches the end of its
service life.

3-6 Operating Manual PSS(1) AI

Function Description

Inputs

The PSS(1) AI module is a safe, analogue input module. It has 6 voltage

inputs (I0 ... I5). The voltage inputs are suitable for connecting transducers
or input devices with standardised 10 V signals. The voltage inputs are
configured as differential inputs. Each voltage input on the PSS(1) AI has
a signal range of -10.24 VDC to +10.235 VDC.

Operation of the module

Each of the voltage inputs (I0 ... I5) has three channels. The voltage
signals are filtered and passed on to the A/D converter via a multiplexer.
The resolution of the A/D converter is 12 bits. The value of the least
significant bit (LSB) is 5 mV. A dual-port RAM stores the converted values.

Processing measured values in the PSS

The PSS(1) AI module is a word processing module. The PSS CPU reads
in the converted values from the dual-port RAM following an operating
system call or at a cycle change. The converted analogue values are
stored in word (XW) addresses. Each input channel has one word (XW)
address.

INFORMATION
A table showing the XW addresses of the PSS(1) as well as further
information regarding configuration can be found in the chapter entitled
“Configuration”.

Use SB 104 from the software package “PSS Standard Function Blocks
MBS PSS AI2” to update measured values, otherwise an appropriate user
program will need to be generated in the PSS failsafe section.

Open circuits along input device connections will be detected. The

following voltages will be present if an open circuit occurs at the voltage
inputs:

• Inputs 0 ... 2: +10.235 VDC

• Inputs 3 ... 5: -10.24 VDC

Test conversion

The test conversion is used to check the module's functionality. This function
is performed by the standard function block SB 104. New test patterns are
continually stored in the dual-port RAM. These test patterns are passed on to
the analogue inputs via a D/A converter. The PSS CPU then re-reads the
values at the inputs and compares them with the stored test pattern.

Configuring the module

The PSS(1) AI module can be configured via the “Configurator” menu on the
programming device (see the chapter entitled “Configuration”).

The module code is 8084 hex.

Key functions:

• You can toggle between the top and bottom table of the “XW configuration”
dialogue box using the TAB key.
• You can move the cursor within the tables using ← and →.
• Highlight an input segment (XWI) or an output segment (XWO) in the top
table.
• Press the TAB key to move the cursor to the "W/D" field.
• Press ↵ to toggle between W (= word) and D (= double word).

Read-in point
In the S/C column of the configurator, you can determine when the read
segment (XWO) is read in.

INFORMATION
More detailed information can be found in the manual “PSS Standard
Function Blocks MBS PSS AI2”.

S: Read measured value at each cycle change.

C: Read specific measured values following the operating system call

SB 255/FUNK = 25.

• Highlight the appropriate letter in the S/C column.

• Toggle between S and C by pressing ↵.

Alignment algorithm

• Move the cursor to the “Alignment algorithm” field.

A list of available alignment modes appears.

• Press ↵ to select the desired alignment mode.

Configuration

INFORMATION
“Av. value with prefix” is the default entry, but other entries are possible.
The entry you select will depend on your specific process. However,
always ensure that you select signed values.

Tolerance value

In the field for tolerance values, enter the maximum deviation permitted for
the words that are read in.

• Move the cursor to the “Tol. val.” field.

• Press ↵.
• Enter a new value.
• Press ↵.

INFORMATION
The default setting for the tolerance value in the programming device is 20
(corresponds to 20 LSB). The entry you select will depend on your specific
process.

WARNING!
With the alignment algorithm and tolerance value, enter the maximum
permitted deviation between the measured values in the three channels of
each voltage input. The tolerance value should be such that, if a unit is
defective or a fault occurs, significant changes in the measured values
cannot trigger a hazardous situation.
The higher the tolerance value, the greater the risk of a hazardous situation
occuring.
