From Publisher’s Desk
Dear Readers,
I extend my warm welcome and convey my heartfelt thanks for appreciating the CBS Exam

grateful for your support and cooperation to help us achieve various milestones in this whole
span of time. The mission with which we started in the year 2015 was to bring nothing but the
best of everything to our target audience and today I can proudly say that we have maintained
that standard and are committed to continue the same in future as well.
Every single title under the banner of CBS Exam Books has been developed and nurtured
like an infant. The authors and our entire team work day and night to bring the best in
everything for you. Be it content, presentation, social media contests and offers, we strive
to meet your expectations with every passing year. Your trust has motivated us to maintain

the real pillars of the complete series of CBS Exam Books. The contributions of our esteemed
authors have laid the foundations of CBS Exam Books.
At this juncture, I can recall these lines by Drake,
“Sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination”.
We have grown and changed with the passage of time to upgrade our ways of providing our readers with maximum benefits and
help them manage their time and efforts in effective manner. Previous year was the year of great achievements. Let me show you a
glimpse of our successful journey:
•• Most of the titles of CBS Exam Books received wide acceptance and recognition by the readers of proving their usefulness and
supremacy. To mention a few, SARP Anatomy, CRISP, Surgery Sixer, Complete Review of Pathology, Conceptual Review of
Pharmacology, SOCH, Forensic Medicine, Complete Review of Medicine, Conceptual Review of PSM, MICRONS, My PGMEE Notes,
AIIMS MedEasy, and PRIMEs. With your constant support and our consistent efforts, I am sure that we will together witness an
exponential acceptance of all CBS Exam Books in coming future as well.
•• The presence of CBS Exam Books has broadened through our various social media platforms. We have received great appreciation
for our regular Facebook activities such as online test series, giveaways, scientific content for knowledge enhancement, authors’ live
sessions, and various contests, like Bid 2 Win, Fastest Finger First, Book Fair and Facebook Community Awards. Join us on all these
platforms to avail and enjoy our exciting offers and benefits.

A book is incomplete if it does not have the right readers. We value you and your feedback. Please share your feedback and suggestions
directly with me at [email protected]. We promise to deliver in our books, what you desire to see.
I would like to sum up with these eternal lines of Robert Frost:
Woods are lovely dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep.
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep!
Wishing you success in all your endeavors!

Preface
Dear students,
I would like to thank all of you for the fantabulous response that you have given to the previous editions. Your reviews and feedback
about first, second, third and fourth editions made me ecstatic and at the same time fueled me to give you an even better fifth edition.
As compared to the fourth edition, I have added several recent guidelines regarding New Drugs 2019 list with changes that have
taken place in pharmacotherapy in the year 2019. For the first time Recently Changed AIIMS Pattern Questions Review 2019 and recently-
conducted 2020 examination papers (Recent Pattern Questions 2020-2019, AIIMS November and May 2019, JIPMER November and May
2019 and PGI May 2019) have been added to ace your preparation practice before upcoming AIIMS examination.
In the chapter ‘Cardiovascular System’, I have added ACLS Guidelines 2017 for management of cardiac arrest, tachycardia and
bradycardia. Apart from this, Changes in ACC/AHA Guidelines in management of CHF and dyslipidemia have also been incorporated.
In the topic of ‘Antimicrobials’, the Recent Changes in regimens for management of TB, HIV, leprosy, etc. have been discussed
in details. Many changes have been incorporated wherever needed, based on CMDT 2019, Goodman Gilman 13th Edition and recent
journals.
Sincere attention has been paid on the feedback sent by the students and the important suggestions have been incorporated in this
edition like—‘Classification of Drugs’ is now given in every topic so that you can revise the drugs at one place. A drug chart on ANS
separately available with the book will prove quite handy for frequent revision.
The backbone of the first edition was concepts, which continue to be there even in this edition. Every topic begins with the relevant
part from preclinical subjects, like anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry and microbiology, and then finally, drugs come into
picture making a web of correlation. The correlation is well explained in the Conceptual Boxes, which tell you why a drug is used. After
all details of drugs are covered, the Clinical Boxes will guide you through the medicine aspect of treatment as to understand where
drugs stand as compared to nondrug strategies of management. These clinical boxes tell you how and when a drug is used. With every
topic, a separate box of Recent Advances has been given to guide you through the future trends in treatment; in recent exams new
drugs and even drugs under trials have been asked.
MCQs of recent exams are cherry on the cake that will keep you abreast with the changing pattern. MCQs of JIPMER and NIMHANS
are also included, so that students preparing for these exams are also benefited. The question section begins with AIIMS and recent exam
questions, which are segregated subtopic wise so that you can solve them after you are through a particular subtopic. However, the other
questions of PGI, JIPMER and NIMHANS are not segregated and you can practice them after you are done with complete topics. Finally, as
Image-based Questions are the current toast of the town, I have given them at the end of each chapter for your practice.
Mnemonics have been included to make learning easier in remembering different aspects related to drugs. One Liners in the
beginning of each chapter cover the most important points, which will give you a quick revision source, a day before exam. ‘Annexures’,
after every chapter, contain the Updated Drugs of Choice and New Drugs Approved by FDA for quick revision.
I have done my part by bringing the world of pharmacology onto your palms and now all depends on how you utilize this book. Study
plans for mastering pharmacology are present on my Facebook Group “Dr Ranjan’s Pharmacology–Discussion and Updates”. The
other important aspects are—Regular Updates and Doubt Discussion in this group.
I have tried my level best to make this book simple, concise and error free. However, if there are any errors you can notify the same to
me through my email ID. I would like to thank all the students who have contributed to book with their suggestions, doubts, etc. and this
is the reason why I say that this is a book “Of the students, By the students and For the students.”

Thank You!
Ranjan Kumar Patel
