ACTIVITY 2

ROLE-PLAYING ACTIVITY: “A Journey Through Labor and Birth”

Course: NCM 107 – Maternal and Child Nursing


Topic: Labor and Delivery Process
Learning Modality: Skills Laboratory / Simulation

Learning Objectives

At the end of the activity, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate appropriate nursing care during the stages of labor.

2. Apply effective communication, empathy, and therapeutic presence when caring for a
woman in labor.

3. Perform nursing responsibilities during delivery (assisting in normal spontaneous


delivery).

4. Show teamwork and role awareness in a delivery room setting.

Characters / Roles

1. Laboring Mother – demonstrates behaviors and expressions appropriate to each stage of


labor.

2. Support Person / Partner – provides emotional and physical support to the mother.

3. Nurse (Labor Room) – assesses, monitors vital signs, provides comfort measures, assists
in breathing techniques, and documents progress.

4. Obstetrician – leads the delivery, gives medical orders, ensures safe birth.

5. Nursery Nurse / Newborn Care Nurse – receives the baby, performs initial newborn
assessment and EINC (Essential Intrapartum and Newborn Care).

6. Recorder / Observer – documents the events, monitors whether procedures and


communication are done correctly.

7. Narrator

Materials Needed

• simulation bed

• Maternity mannequin / pillow (as pregnant abdomen)

• Baby mannequin (for delivery)

• Delivery tray set (simulated or real)

• Towels, sheets, gloves, apron, mask, clamps, scissors (mock or sterile simulation)
• BP apparatus, stethoscope

• Clean table, chart, and documentation forms

• Props (for realism): ID tags, curtains, IV line, pillow

Procedure / Flow of the Activity

I. Introduction (5)

• Facilitator explains the purpose of the role play.

• Brief discussion on the 4 stages of labor and corresponding nursing interventions.

II. Role Play Proper (20 minutes)

Stage 1: Early Labor

• Mother complains of regular contractions every 5 minutes.

• Nurse assesses vital signs, contraction pattern, cervical dilation, and offers comfort (deep
breathing, positioning).

• Support person assists in relaxation techniques.

• Documentation by observer.

Stage 2: Delivery (Expulsive Stage)

• Mother shows bearing down efforts.

• Nurse and OB assist with pushing, ensure sterile field, encourage mother.

• Delivery occurs (baby mannequin).

• Nurse (newborn care) clamps and cuts cord, ensures newborn warmth, performs EINC
steps.

• OB delivers placenta, checks for completeness.

• Documentation continues.

Stage 3: Immediate Postpartum

• Mother monitored for bleeding and uterine contraction.

• Nurse massages fundus, records vital signs, and ensures comfort.

• Newborn nurse performs newborn assessment (APGAR scoring) and identification tagging.

Stage 4: Recovery and Bonding

• Mother and baby are allowed skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding.

• Nurse assists and provides health teaching about post-delivery care.
