Lesson 6 The Death of Jesus Christ

B. Key Concepts
In this lesson we will study the most important topic in Christianity. Although the death of
Jesus on the cross was undeniably the most wretched event in history, it was also the most
blissful tidings given to mankind who faced eternal judgment without it. It causes our hearts
to beat with joy to know that we are given life through Jesus‟ death. Therefore, we must
approach Jesus‟ death on the cross with utmost sincerity, humility, and gratitude. It brings to
mind the verse in Isaac Watt‟s hymn, “But drops of grief can ne‟er repay the debt of love I
owe: Here, Lord, I give myself away, „tis all that I can do…” We should continually focus on
the cross because it is the source of our heartfelt love for the Lord. It is also the fountain of
the precious blood of Christ that washes away our sins. People sing Isaac Watt‟s hymn with
enthusiasm; in reality, however, there are not that many people who dedicate their lives to
Christ because of the grace found at the cross.

Doctrinal Summary
1. Jesus rose form the dead in three days with a perfect and whole body.
2. His resurrection provided the way for the salvation of mankind.
3. The resurrected Jesus is King of kings and the Lord of the universe.
4. He is now seated at the right hand of God and is preparing for the second coming.
5. The validity of the Christian faith stands or falls by the truth of the resurrection.
6. Whoever denies the resurrection of Jesus is either a nonbeliever or a cult member.

Lesson 7
The Resurrection of Jesus
Christ A. Learning Outcomes: After engaging in this topic,
you should have
a. Understood the importance of the resurrection,
[Link] the resurrection of Christ,
c. Explained the nature of the resurrection, and
d. Explained the necessity of the resurrection

B. Key Concepts
The fact that Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected on the third day is the most
important precept of Christianity. If the resurrection was a lie, the absolute dependability of
the Bible would have been gone in an instant. Consequently, the Bible repeatedly reports the
resurrection event in detail, providing satisfactory evidence for believers. In general, those
who have been attending church for a long time are moved less by the death and resurrection
of Jesus Christ, and they tend to take lightly the story of the resurrection because they have
become too familiar with it. This is an extremely grave matter. The resurrection of Jesus Christ
was an actual event. It is an event which we must affirm, and give thanks and praise to God
daily. It is an event which we must affirm, and give thanks and praise to God daily. Our
heartfelt gratitude for the resurrection should never be in the past tense. Is your thankfulness
waning?

Doctrinal Summary
1. Jesus rose from the dead in three days with a perfect and whole body.
2. His resurrection provided the way for the salvation of mankind.
3. The resurrected Jesus in King of kings and Lord of the universe.

___________________________________________________________________________________ 5.
Jesus said that on the day when the disciples would see the resurrected Jesus, they would be
filled with a great joy which could not be taken from them (John 16:22). According to those
who have seen a supposedly dead person come alive, there is no joy that can be compared
with the joy of that moment. If that is the case, then it is abnormal for you not to experience
great joy after hearing the message that Jesus “ who loved me and gave Himself for me” has
risen from the dead (Galatians 2:20), and verify that message constantly through the Bible. If
you feel the joy of the resurrection waning in you, check on the appropriate line next to the
possible reasons stated below. Then discuss honestly how the problems might be solved.
____ I still do not completely believe the resurrection event.
____ My love for Jesus is too small.
____ I have heard too many times to have any feeling left about it.
____ I still do not know the facts accurately.
____ I am not sharing the message of Jesus‟ resurrection with others.
____ I have not received in earnestness the grace blessings of the resurrection.
____ I am not really interested because I still love the world and my flesh a little too much.
____ There is no room in my heart to rejoice because life has been difficult lately.
____ I have fallen into a sin that is difficult to share with others and which is stealing my joy.

Lesson 8
The Coming of the Promise Holy Spirit

A. Learning Outcomes: after engaging in the topic, you should have

a. Understood the procession of the Holy Spirit,
b. Identified and explained the works of the Holy Spirit,
c. Exemplified the work of the Holy Spirit to the believer, and
d. Discussed the work of the Holy Spirit for the Church.

B. Key Concepts
The Holy Spirit came ten days after the ascension of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit
will not leave the church until the final day of the world. We are living in the time of grace in
which every believer is given the gift of the Holy Spirit without exception – unlike the Old
Testament era. All Christians have become the recipients of this blessing. New understandings
and assertions about the work of the Holy Spirit have come forth in the twentieth century, and
they brought both benefits and confusion. Therefore it is essential to have a correct biblical
understanding of the Holy Spirit. Since there are many works falsely attributed to the Holy
Spirit, we must carefully discern. Having a biblically correct understanding of the Holy Spirit
should be considered more important than having a spectacular experience.
Doctrinal Summary
1. The Holy Spirit is God‟s promised grace, and He was given after the ascension of Jesus
Christ.
2. The Holy Spirit will be with the church till the end of the world.
3. Everyone who believes in Jesus Christ receives the gift of the Holy Spirit without exception.
4. The baptism of the Holy Spirit may or may not be accompanied by an ecstatic experience.

A. Learning Outcomes: After engaging in the topic, you should have
a. Understood that rebirth is a work done solely by God through the Holy Spirit and the
Word,
b. Explained that rebirth is a special grace given only to those whom God has chosen to
save and that only those who have been born again can respond to God‟s call, c.
Understood that in rebirth, people have a passive role,
d. Understood that the presence of a special experience at rebirth is not an absolute
requirement, and
e. Discussed the distinctions of rebirth and assurance of salvation.

B. Key concepts
A person cannot enter the kingdom of God without being born again. Being born again
implies rebirth. Although biblical scholars have not yet come to a perfect agreement regarding
the meaning of being born again, this concept is not so difficult that it is impossible to be
understood. The reason lies in the fact that this rebirth takes places in our inner being. We
have various evidences that can confirm the fact of rebirth more that any theory. It is
disturbing to see that many in the church are worried that they may not have been born
again. Even more disturbing is that those who may not have been undoubtedly been born
again are constantly shaken because they lack the assurance of salvation. Those are the
people who constantly stand up at revival meetings whenever the speaker gives an altar call
and says, „Those of you who have not been saved stand.‟ Perhaps you are one of those
people, but we must not be so.

Doctrinal Summary
1. Rebirth is a work done solely by God through the Holy Spirit and the Word.
2. Rebirth is a special grace given only to those whom God has chosen to save.
3. In rebirth, people have a passive role.
4. Only those who have been born again can respond to God‟s call.

1:8).
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________

8. We must not testify to the fact that we have been born simply by saying „because I believe
in Jesus.‟ Instead, we must testify to our rebirth with practical evidences such as actual
examples of faith, hope, and love at work in our lives. Our rebirth should also be evident in
our exemplary conduct and in sharing Jesus Christ wherever we are. How do you testify to
your rebirth?

Lesson 10
What is Faith?

A. Learning outcomes: After engaging in the topic, you should have

a. Understood that faith is a gift of God,
[Link] the relationship of the Word and Faith,
c. Understood that faith that saves includes receiving Jesus as Lord in our heart and
confessing Him as Lord with our mouth,
[Link] that the content of faith is to know Christ and what He has done,
e. Understood that faith is accompanied by the fruits of repentance and obedience, and
f. Explained that faith contains cognitive, affective, and volitional elements

B. Key Concepts
Although there are many aspects we need to consider when we speak of faith, the most
important one is „grace‟. Faith is a gift of grace given entirely by God. When we realize this
truth, we will cherish our faith, be filled with gratitude and joy each day, and engaging in our
spiritual journey with unshakable confidence. A faith that understands and embraces a
heartfelt gratitude towards grace can be referred to as a „faith that works love.‟ If we do not
consider faith as grace of God, but rather the result of our own decision and will, then we can
become arrogant and unable to dispel the fear of forsaking our faith someday. Our Christian
walk may lack in gratitude and joy. Let us engage in this lesson by focusing on God‟s grace
that gives us faith.

Doctrinal Summary
[Link] is a gift of God.
2. Faith comes from hearing the Word of God.
3. To insist that one believes our of one‟s own free will is to display self-righteousness
and to downplay the truth that faith is a gift of God.
4. Faith that saves includes receiving Jesus as Lord in your heart and confessing Him as
Lord with your mouth.
5. The content of faith is to know Christ and what He has done.
6. Faith is accompanied by the fruits of repentance and obedience.
7. Faith contains cognitive (intellect), affective (emotion), and volitional (will) elements.

a. Why is faith considered a gift from God?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
b. From our point of view, the decision to believe may have been arbitrary and

gracious gift of God indicates that even the decision of our free will was a grace from
God. Can you say that this is true in your case?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
c. There is a doctrine called „irresistible grace.‟ This doctrine means that no one can
resist when God wills and enables a person to believe. In other words, it means that
even those who run away from faith will come to believe in the end. Give an example
of a character in the Bible who came to faith by such grace. (See Acts 9).

understands faith as totally of grace or the one who understands faith as a product of
one‟s own arbitrary will? And why?
___________________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________
f. Explain and give examples of the phrase, „not by works.‟
___________________________________________________________________________________

Read Hebrews 11:33-38. How would you summarize the faith of those mentioned in this
text?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________ d.
What does 1 John 5:4-5 teach us about faith?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________ 4.
We must not be satisfied with faith that just saves us. We must have victorious faith that
overcomes the world. When saving faith grows and is strengthened through the Word, it
develops into faith that overcomes the world and obeys God‟s will. Sadly there are many
among believers who do not have this mighty faith that conquers the world. We must find
where the problem lies and resolve it promptly. a. Is your faith immature? Are you satisfied
with just being saved?
___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________ b.
What is the reason that your faith has not been growing properly?
